August is National Family Fun Month! Explore the Best Adventures in Boise for All Ages

August is National Family Fun Month—a perfect excuse to make lasting memories with the people who matter most. And the Boise area offers lots of ways to keep everyone entertained. This time of year is packed with events, activities, and adventures that make family time effortless and exciting. From soaring hot air balloons to rodeo thrills, here are some of the best ways to soak up the final stretch of summer with your crew and have some good ol’ family fun!

1. The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic (August 27–31, 2025)

Late August in Boise skies looks like something out of a dream. The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic brings dozens of colorful hot air balloons drifting above the city’s skyline. Families can enjoy free morning launches at Ann Morrison Park and even take part in special events like Night Glow, where the balloons light up the night. It’s magical for kids and just as awe-inspiring for adults.

2. The Western Idaho Fair (August 15–24, 2025)

A Treasure Valley tradition since 1897, the Western Idaho Fair is an end-of-summer must. Ride the Ferris wheel, sample fair food classics (hello, funnel cake), try your luck at carnival games, and explore livestock exhibits. The fair also hosts big-name concerts and rodeo events—so there’s something for every member of the family.

3. Caldwell Night Rodeo (August 12–16, 2025)

Known as “Where the Cowboys are the Stars,” the Caldwell Night Rodeo is one of the top five large outdoor rodeos in the nation. Families can watch professional rodeo athletes compete in events like barrel racing, bull riding, and steer wrestling—all under the magic of stadium lights. The energy, pageantry, and community pride make it unforgettable.

4. Roaring Springs Water Park (Open Daily through Sept 14, 2025)

When August temperatures climb, cool off at Roaring Springs, one of the largest water parks in the Northwest. With twisting slides, wave pools, lazy rivers, and splash areas for younger kids, it’s an all-day adventure. Pack sunscreen, grab a cabana if you want some shade, and get ready for squeals of joy.

5. Float the Boise River (Open through Labor Day Weekend)

A classic Boise summer activity, floating the Boise River is relaxing, refreshing, and fun for all ages. Launch from Barber Park and drift your way to Ann Morrison Park, enjoying the scenic views along the way. Bring tubes or rent rafts, and don’t forget your life jackets and plenty of water.

6. Explore Local Parks and Trails

If you’re looking for a slower-paced day, Boise’s greenbelt and surrounding foothills offer miles of trails for biking, hiking, or strolling. Popular spots like Camel’s Back Park, Lucky Peak State Park, and Kathryn Albertson Park are perfect for picnics, wildlife spotting, and simply soaking up summer’s beauty.

7. Take a Day Trip to the Mountains

Just a short drive from Boise, mountain towns like McCall and Stanley offer cooler temps and a whole new set of adventures—think kayaking on Payette Lake, horseback riding, fishing, or hiking among alpine wildflowers.
