The HERS® (Home Energy Rating System) was developed by RESNET and is the nationally recognized system for inspection and calculation of a home’s energy performance. The RESNET HERS Index® is a linear scale and is the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured.

A standard new home is given a rating of 100 on the HERS Index®. The lower the rating, the more energy efficient it is and the lower the homeowner’s energy costs will be. So, a home rating of 70 on the HERS Index® is 30% more efficient than the standard new home. A rating of 130 (a typical rating for an older resale home) is 30% less efficient than a standard new home.

Home values are on the rebound and with it so is real estate market confidence within the U.S. Many home buyers who have been thinking about purchasing their vacation dream homes are now in a better financial position to do so. Vacation home sales in 2015 remained at the second highest amount in nearly a decade, while investment purchases increased for the first time in five years, according to an annual survey of residential homebuyers released by the National Association of Realtors®.
