A Deep Dive into the Numbers

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program reveals that Idaho’s property crime rate is the lowest nationwide, and its violent crime rate is also impressively low, placing it 13th in the country. In 2024, Idaho recorded just 2.4 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, compared to the national average of 4.0. Property crime stood at 11.1 per 1,000 residents, significantly below the national rate of 19.6.

The Idaho Statistical Analysis Center (ISAC) also reported a 6.3% drop in total offense rate from 2023 to 2024, marking the lowest point in two decades. Since 2005, crimes against property have decreased by a staggering 66%, and crimes against persons are down 35%

Why Is Idaho So Safe?

Several factors contribute to Idaho’s impressive safety record:

Cities Leading the Way

Some of Idaho’s cities stand out as particularly safe havens. Rexburg, for example, has maintained a violent crime rate of just 0.02 per 1,000 residents for three consecutive years. Hailey, Weiser, and Shelley also report exceptionally low crime rates, making them ideal places for families and retirees.

Public Perception and Safety Measures

Interestingly, while crime rates are low, 65% of Idaho residents believe crime is increasing, prompting a rise in personal safety measures such as home security systems and neighborhood watch programs. This proactive approach further reinforces the state’s commitment to safety.

Final Word

Idaho’s recognition as the safest state in America is more than just a statistic—it’s a reflection of its values, governance, and community spirit. Whether you’re considering a move or simply looking for a peaceful getaway, the Gem State shines bright as a model of safety and serenity.
