SUMMARY:ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES
DESCRIPTION:ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES – ¡BLOW IT…AT MADISON’S\nQUINCEAÑERA! Twenty years after Me First and the Gimme\nGimmes ruined Johnny’s Bar Mitzvah\, punk rock’s premier cover band is back to\nwreak havoc on another important coming-of-age ceremony. This time\, as the\nalbum title reveals\, it was a Quinceañera. Nobody attending had ever heard\nof Me First and the Gimme Gimmes before\, and nobody knew what to expect.\n“It was really tense for me going out to no applause—and to people actually\nwalking away when we were playing\,” says frontman Spike Slawson. “A\nQuinceañera is a very celebrated and important event\, not just in a young girl’s\nlife\, but in the whole families. Mom and Dad were great\, but it took the uncles a\nlittle while to warm up to me and our off-color jokes\, though I think eventually\nthey got it. Our process is to cast the line out and bring people to the point of—\nand beyond—outward expressions of displeasure like booing\, and then\nhopefully reel them back in by the end of the set.”\nDoes that kind of make Me First and the Gimme Gimmes—especially on this\nrecord—the Andy Kaufman of punk rock? Possibly. But you don’t have to be in\non the joke to enjoy this album. Nor do you have to be a sadist (but it wouldn’t\nhurt) to enjoy the one person politely clapping after Slawson introduces\n“Changes” at the beginning of the first of the band’s two sets. “This is a Black\nSabbath song\,” he says. “If you know it\, feel free to sing along.” Nobody does.\nBut he interpolates birthday girl\, Madison’s\, name into the song\, and as the\nband speeds things up a little later\, you can feel that heavy\, early tension\ndissipate a very tiny bit. When he speaks to her at the start of “Dancing Queen\,”\nthings loosen up a little bit more—though you could still cut the air with a\ncumpleaños cake-sized knife—and there are even a few cheers after the band\nsings “Happy Birthday.” The turning point\, however\, has to be the wonderfully\nSNAFU’d cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U”\, which is a work of art in and of\nitself\, regardless of context. And while it might not have gotten the exact same\nreception the popstar herself gets in arenas; it’s still followed by enthusiastic\nscreams. What’s more\, as it’s wont to do\, the band even manages to include a\nnod to a punk classic at the start\, in the shape of “Ever Fallen In Love.”\n“We just thought it was too perfect\,” remembers Slawson. “Nobody in the place\nknew who the Buzzcocks were or cared what the intro was or anything\, so it\nwas kind of lost on them\, but that moment in the set I think was when the\ncrowd was finally fully on our side. We had them eating out of the palm of our\nhands at that point\, which was a good feeling because it was touch and go until\nthen. But with that song we finally played something from this millennium.”\nRecorded on July 15th\, 2023\, at The Soap Factory in San Diego\, on this live\nouting\, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes were completed by Joey Cape on\nguitar\, CJ Ramone on bass\, Swami John Reis on guitar\, and Andrew “Pinch”\nPinching on drums—a veritable punk rock supergroup\, as ever\, not that anyone\nat the Quinceañera knew or cared. However\, they also had a horn section for\nthe first time\, courtesy of Keith Douglas and Jason Crane. Swami John Reis’\nfather\, John Reis Sr.\, even played accordion on the penultimate song\, “Before\nthe Next Teardrop Falls\,” the track made famous in 1975 by Freddy Fender. It\nall comes together to create a performance that rises (even as it’s sinking) to\nthe occasion. It would have been so easy for the band to play to a crowd who\nalready knew and loved them\, but that’s not the Gimme Gimmes way. Besides\,\nyou get more sense of what the band is like live listening to this than you ever\ncould from a slick performance in front of an adoring audience. For Slawson\,\nthat redemption arc is precisely the point.\n“I would like this to be considered indicative of what a live show by the Gimme\nGimmes can be\,” he says. “The only difference is that there would be people\nthat wanted to hear us specifically and came to see us. What happened at this\nshow\, to me\, is better than unfettered\, unconditional applause from a lot of\npeople. Golf-claps from about five people is how I want to hear a live record.\nIt’s funny\, and it doesn’t stop being funny. Not only do outward displays of\ndisapproval not scare me\, but I might even crave them a little bit. I don’t\nnecessarily want to leave with people booing\, but fawning praise makes me\ncringe. The girl had a good time\, her mom and dad had a good time\, her abuelo\nhad a good time. And then when the DJ music finally played\, her friends had a\ngood time\, too.” \n\n\n\n \n\nThe Schizophonics\nOver the last few years\, THE SCHIZOPHONICS have built up a formidable reputation around the world as an explosive live act. Tapping into the same unstoppable combination of rock ‘n’ roll energy and showmanship that fueled THE MC5 in the heyday of the Grande Ballroom\, their wild live show is heavily influenced by artists like JAMES BROWN\, IGGY POP\, JIMI HENDRIX\, LITTLE RICHARD\, and THE SONICS. Singer/guitarist Pat Beers and drummer Lety Beers formed the band in San Diego in 2009 and have worked tirelessly since then\, playing hundreds of shows around the globe. In 2013 they were recruited as the backing/opening band for EL VEZ\, which helped the band make a name for itself in Europe. Since then\, they’ve played in numerous countries\, and supported tours by like-minded acts like ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT\, LITTLE BARRIE\, THE WOGGLES and have opened for the DAMNED\, DEVO\, HIVES and CAGE THE ELEPHANT. Shindig magazine described their live show “Like watching some insane hybrid of WAYNE KRAMER\, JAMES BROWN\, and the Tazmanian Devil”. \nThe band is more than just a live act\, they’re also committed to writing great memorable songs. Their new album in due in the fall of 2022 along with extensive tour dates. The Schizophonics- hailed by Spotify as the “wildest live band in America” – wouldn’t want it any other way. \n\n\n \n\nStill Animals\nShaped of Mississippi river mud and basement limestone\, Still Animals are familiar faces from the St. Louis underground punk/HC scene. Vocalist Lee and drummer Francis have been longtime fixtures at basement gigs\, the skatepark\, and the hardware store\, but never started a band – and approach music with all the joy\, rage\, and slop you’d expect from something new. Jessie (Nasty Cat Bath\, Dada Gun) and Gabe (Lumpy & the Dumpers\, Ace of Spit\, Fried E/M) keep the strings on the rails while Lee howls love songs and attacks techno-fascism and big money with the unhinged conviction of David Peel and Doc Dart. \n\n\n \n\nDJ Thirst n Howl\nSeattle area show spinner.\nDropper of needles\, fumbler of beats\, purveyor of questionable taste.\nOdds and sods\, bits and bobs.\nMake mine a Fernet.
