SUMMARY:ALLEN STONE\, BROTHER ELSEY
DESCRIPTION:Along with immersing himself in a songwriting approach that involved unflinching examination of “some very dark and negative moments in my life\,” Stone shaped the sound and feel of Radius by pushing himself to “get past the boundaries of what I felt comfortable with\, so that I could progress into a whole new level of creativity.” Despite that sometimes-daunting process\, Radius wholly reveals Stone’s easy grace in blending everything from edgy soul-pop and earthy folk-rock to throwback R&B and Parliament-inspired funk. \nRadius first began to come to life back in the fall of 2013\, when Stone headed to Sweden to join in a writing session with Tingsek. “His musicality is so outside-the-box\, and it really stretched me as an artist\,” says Stone\, who’d tapped Tingsek as one of his opening acts for an 85-date headlining tour in 2012. “We just kept on throwing a wrench into the works and tried to create something that’s the complete antithesis of what you’d expect from pop music.” After recording the bulk of the album in Sweden\, Stone rounded out Radius’s production at his own studio in the woods of northeast Washington and in L.A.-based sessions with producers like Benny Cassette (who’s previously worked with Kanye West) and Malay (a co-producer on Frank Ocean’s channel ORANGE). \n~Like many of his own musical heroes—Stevie Wonder chief among them—Stone pulls off the near-magical feat of channeling a weight-of-the-world sensitivity into his songs while still radiating hope and promise. And though that depth of consciousness feels transmitted from a more golden era\, Radius continually hones in on issues both timeless and of-the-moment\, with Stone’s breezily poetic lyrics touching on topics ranging from rampant materialism (on the tenderly string-accented\, harmony-soaked “American Privilege”) and the toxic takeover of technology in art (on the gutsy and groove-heavy “Fake Future”). “That song’s mainly about how technology’s infiltrating music in a way that’s making it less and less human and taking all the heart out of it\,” Stone says of the latter track\, a soul-pop powerhouse peppered with playfully cutting lines like “Rock stars pushing buttons/Few actually play/City wasn’t ever built on lights and Special K.” And as evidenced by Radius’s lush yet raw sonic landscape—wherein the only hint of synth comes from a Moog analog synthesizer—Stone stayed true to his pledge to “keep fakeness completely out of this record” and rely entirely on live instrumentation. \nEqually introspective and outwardly searching\, Radius also finds Stone exploring intensely personal matters\, such as depression on the stark and lovely\, acoustic-guitar-woven ballad “Circle” (“That one was written at a pretty dark time for me\,” Stone points out. “It’s about how depression can put you into a kind of circle\, where you’re just trying to find a way out but it keeps on leading you back inside”). Showing his skill at crafting a killer love song as well\, Stone looks at heartbreak and regret on the aching\, electric-piano-infused “I Know That I Wasn’t Right\,” slips into hopeless romanticism on the dreamy R&B pastiche “Barbwire\,” and unleashes some starry-eyed affection on the dancefloor-ready “Symmetrical” (a sample lyric: “The angle of your spine/Is sending lightning bolts down mine/When those molecules combine/It’s astronomically divine”). And in tracks like the ultra-catchy album-opener “Perfect World” and the fiery\, horn-laced “Freedom\,” Radius unfolds into epically joyful anthems that show the full range and power of Stone’s vocals. \nStone started working those vocals as a kid\, thanks largely to his parents’ influence. “My father was a minister so I spent about half my childhood in church\, watching my mom and dad sing together and lead the congregation in song\,” he recalls. By the time he was 11 he’d picked up a guitar and written his first song\, and soon began self-recording demo tapes to pass along to classmates. Although Stone enrolled in bible college after high school\, he quickly dropped out to move to Seattle and kickstart his music career. “I had an ’87 Buick and I’d drive up and down the west coast\, playing any gig I could get just to try to put my music out there\,” he says. \nAt age 22\, Stone self-released his debut album\, 2010’s Last To Speak. But it was his self-titled follow-up (on which he joined forces with former Miles Davis keyboardist Deron Johnson) that ended up earning him serious recognition. Along with entering the top five on iTunes’ R&B/Soul chart after its digital release\, Allen Stone prompted him to score appearances on such late-night talk shows like Conan and grace the pages of publications like the New York Times (whose chief popular-music critic Jon Pareles praised Stone for possessing “a tenor voice with the eagerness and frisky syncopations of [Stevie] Wonder”). And upon partnering with ATO Records for a physical release of his self-titled album in 2012\, Stone soon turned up on the likes of the Late Show with David Letterman and landed a gig as the opening act for soul legend Al Green. In the midst of all the buzz\, he also took up a grueling touring schedule\, tearing through nearly 600 shows in just two years. \nFor Stone\, all that time onstage went a long way in preparing him for the many creative breakthroughs he’s made on Radius. “I think you really grow as a musician when you’re playing right in front of people\, and for me constantly growing and progressing and getting better is really the most important thing\,” he says. Ruminating on the emotional undertones of his new album’s title and noting that “the center of me is my heart\,” Stone says he also hopes that Radius will ultimately help listeners shed new light on their own struggles. “There’ve been times in my life when records were my saving grace and really helped me to figure out who I am\, and I’d love for my music to have that kind of impact on a kid who’s looking for his or her own place in this life\,” he says. “Because I absolutely believe that if you’re going to stand at a microphone and say something\, you need to recognize that as a privilege. You’ve got to be incredibly careful about it\, and really put all your heart into the message that you’re sending out into the world.”

SUMMARY:THE LONE BELLOW TRIO - LOVE SONGS FOR LOSERS TOUR
DESCRIPTION:KNITTING FACTORY – BOISE\n416 S. 9TH ST. – BOISE\, ID 83702\nWED\nJUNE 21\n8:00 PM\n(DOORS: 7:00 PM)\nALL AGES \n“I want it to bring comfort\,” The Lone Bellow guitarist Brian Elmquist says. “But it’s not all hard conversations. There’s a lot of light and some dancing that needs to happen.” Brian is reflecting on Half Moon Light\, the band’s highly anticipated new album. \nHalf Moon Light is an artistic triumph worked toward for years\, earned not by individual posturing\, but by collective determination and natural growth. With earthy three-part harmonies and songwriting as provocative as it is honest\, the trio made up of Brian\, lead vocalist Zach Williams\, and multi-instrumentalist Kanene Donehey Pipkin creates sparks that make a stranger’s life matter or bring our sense of childlike wonder roaring back. On Half Moon Light\, The Lone Bellow mix light and dark to muster a complex ode to memory\, a call for hope\, and an exercise in empathy. Anchored in the acoustic storytelling that first so endeared the band to fans and critics\, Half Moon Light also takes more chances\, experimenting with textures and instrumental fillips to create a full-bodied music experience. The result is The Lone Bellow’s most sophisticated work to date. \n“We try to invite as many people into the process to see what we can make together\,” Brian says. “I like that spirit and that freedom. Then\, the songs speak for themselves.” \nThat wholehearted embrace of collaboration defines Half Moon Light. The record marks a return to recording in New York with Aaron Dessner\, whom the band counts as both a hero and a friend. “We already had a friendship with Aaron and a strong\, shared understanding of our musical vision\,” Zach says. “It’s really important to us to be a part of a community of musicians. We like that way of making something. Aaron showed us a new way of trusting. His idea of bringing in Josh Kaufman and J.T. Bates was such a beautiful gift. The meekness that these friends brought to the table was something that we will never forget. A sense of controlled fury. Lightning in a shoebox.” \n“Aaron has a powerful quietness about him\,” Kanene says. “A lot of people I meet in the music industry have lots of bravado\, and it’s something I have trouble believing. Aaron doesn’t have that. He is a joy to work with. A true friend.” \nFor the first time\, the band stayed where they recorded\, sequestered from the world at Aaron’s studio in upstate New York. They fell asleep at night to the sound of coyotes howling and felt the freedom to fall into rabbit holes that would have otherwise been left unexplored. “We made this record in a place of joy with our friends. We were trying to do something bigger than ourselves\,” says Brian. “I think we’ve been wanting to make this record for a while now. It just hasn’t come together as perfectly as it did this time.” \nA lone piano launches into a hymn as the album’s intro track. The pianist is Zach’s grandmother\, playing at the funeral of her husband of 64 years––Zach’s grandfather. The hymn returns as an interlude and outro\, underscoring The Lone Bellow’s intention for 12 songs to be experienced together\, as an album. \nWonder––feeling it\, losing it\, finding it again––underpins the entire record. Pulsing with the trio’s signature harmonies\, the track “Wonder” is a loving call to reclaim the childlike awe and appreciation age takes away. Zach pulled from vivid childhood memories to craft the song\, which transports listeners to moments of breathlessness experienced in the everyday: cheap coffee\, backroad car rides\, pine-tree views\, and powerful songs. \nJubilant “I Can Feel You Dancing” rolls into a cathartic celebration. The song pays tribute to “lionhearted” free spirits with horns and soaring vocals. With a winking jungle beat\, “Good Times” tells tales Zach has collected over the years. “Some stories were told on a boat I worked on in the Caribbean in the middle of the night. Some were in old Irish pubs in Manhattan. Some were in backyards down in my hometown. Some were in a hospital bed\,” Zach says. “I wanted to shine light on the fact that there are still people living with beauty and reckless abandonment.” Delivered over intimate acoustic guitar and hushed backing instrumentation\, “Enemies” is a self-contained call and response that reconnects life-defining moments with the frustrating or tenuous present that threatens to snuff out the magic. \nLead single “Count On Me” reminds us to lean on one another with soul-shouting intensity. Praise for deep friendships pops up again and again throughout the album: “Friends” celebrates the relationships forged after years together in the trenches––with a musical swagger that nods to David Byrne and Tom Petty. \nKanene takes the lead on tour-de-force “Just Enough to Get By.” Her inimitable voice––capable of grit and smoothness––pushes through line after line with steely purpose. The performance would saunter were it not for the rage bubbling underneath. Kanene wrote the song about her mother\, who was raped at 19\, then sent away to have the baby that resulted. When she returned home\, she never spoke of what had happened until 40 years later\, when Kanene’s half-sister––the baby––found them. “I’ve met my half-sister many times. She’s wonderful and lovely and an amazing story of something never being too broken to be fixed. But my mom had to work through the trauma\,” Kanene says. “This song was me putting myself in my mom’s place\, releasing a lot of complex emotions. Anger is definitely one of them. Hurt\, frustration\, sadness. We all have experiences that could be better if we could talk about them\, but we keep them hidden.” \nAlbum standout “Illegal Immigrant” also features Kanene’s vocals. Brian took the lead writing the song\, which tells the true story of a mother and child separated at the U.S.-Mexico border. The chorus’s “I promised I’d find you\, wherever you are\, wherever you are / Here I am” is equal parts haunting\, heartbreaking\, and reassuring––and the unfiltered words actually spoken by the immigrant mother into a press conference microphone. Kanene sings with weighty restraint––like a parent burying their own terror so they can be their child’s rock. “I was trying to tell her story the best I could\,” Brian says. “I wanted to keep myself as far out of the equation as I could and just try to connect––to help find some compassion.” \nBrian also penned “Wash It Clean\,” which both Zach and Kanene point to as a favorite. Lilting with guitar and harmonica\, the song is a letter to Brian’s dad\, who passed away suddenly last year. The two had a strained relationship\, and Brian spent years trying to find some common ground. They did\, and then two months later\, his dad was gone. The band recorded the song on the one-year anniversary of Brian’s father’s death\, without Brian even realizing it at the time. “I feel like that means he was here––or in me\,” Brian says. “Working really hard to find understanding was probably one of the greatest gifts and lessons of my whole life.” \nThe stories behind the songs matter––but they aren’t what matters most. In the end\, The Lone Bellow’s music needs no explanation. Just listening offers a salve and a shelter. “In my own perfect little world\, I would be able to put the music out and not talk about it––just\, Here. Bye. See you next time\,” Zach says\, then laughs softly. “I do hope someone will find this music in a peaceful moment\, when they can turn it on and get lost in the story and the sound.”

After years of refining his craft and carving out his singular identity as an artist\, the Oregon-based musician has created his most captivating work to date: a genre-bending batch of songs built on both emotionally raw storytelling and incisive soul-searching\, offering much-needed insight into living with hope even in the darkest of times.\nBorn into an exceptionally musical family—his father Ron was a Motown session player who performed on iconic tracks like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller\,” while his mother Victoria toured as a backup singer for the likes of Lena Horne—Artis grew up in Oahu and started playing drums at age nine\, later taking up piano\, guitar\, and harmonica. Although he’d dabbled in songwriting throughout his childhood\, he found a whole new sense of artistic purpose after using music to cope with the sudden death of his father. “Once I started really focusing on songwriting\, I realized my music could bring healing not only to me\, but to other people in pain\,” says Artis\, who was 13 when his father passed away. Raised on everything from jazz to country to classic soul singers like Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye\, he immersed himself in sharpening his songcraft and soon began touring extensively with his older brother\, acclaimed singer/songwriter Ron Artis II. With his debut EP Haunted released in 2018\, Artis next emerged as a finalist on NBC’s “The Voice” in 2020\, in addition to becoming a mainstay at Wanderlust festivals throughout North America.\nIn bringing his latest output to life\, Artis worked in Los Angeles with producers John Alagia (NEEDTOBREATHE\, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real) and Jesse Siebenberg (Lissie\, Blue Sky Riders) and in Nashville with producer Dan Agee (Jessie James Decker\, The Cains). Spotlighting the stunning range of his voice more fully than ever before\, each song matches his nuanced reflection with a newly expanded sound. “There’s been a lot of change for me over the last few years\, and this music is an embodiment of who I am now\,” notes Artis\, who married his wife Faith McMaster in 2020 and welcomed their first child into the world in 2022. One of the first tracks penned for his new project\, “Take Me to the Fire” unfolds in soulful piano work and moody guitar tones as Artis speaks to the profound transformation that often follows times of struggle. “As I was writing that song\, I was looking at it from the perspective of my religion\,” explains Artis\, who’s dedicated much of his life to working in ministry. “There’s a lot in the text of Christianity about letting go of what doesn’t belong\, and stepping into the person you’re truly meant to be.” Another song deeply informed by his faith\, “Stand Up Eight” arrives as a bold and urgent anthem graced with potent beats and a searing guitar solo. “The idea of falling down seven times and standing up eight comes from the Scriptures\,” says Artis. “It’s about how no matter how much life knocks you down\, you’ve got to have the strength to keep getting back up.”\nA prime showcase for his extraordinary versatility\, Artis’s new body of work also encompasses the cascading folk of “Oh Little River” and the brightly soaring alt-pop of “Surprise” (a gorgeously expressed outpouring of love for his wife). And on “Wildfire\,” Artis sets his introspection to a spellbinding backdrop of tender acoustic guitar and delicate piano melodies. “Of all my new songs\, ‘Wildfire’ really shows a piece of my history\,” he says. “At some point in my life\, I realized I’d put up these walls to protect myself from the pain I felt after losing my dad. But as I got older\, the walls had become more like a prison. ‘Wildfire’ is about how we all need someone to help us burn those walls down\, so that we can find healing instead of hiding from the world.”\nFor Artis\, the work of writing such revelatory songs has become its own form of sustenance. “From a very young age\, music has been like an anchor for me; I really don’t know where it’d be without it\,” he says. “At this point I don’t go anywhere without my guitar—because if I do\, I feel like there’s a part of me that’s missing.” But for all the fulfillment he finds in songwriting\, Artis always keeps an eye toward the potential impact on his audience. “I believe that artists have a responsibility to explain what they’re feeling and put it into their art\, so that others can understand themselves better\,” he says. “So even though I hope my songs give people a better sense of who I am as a person\, I also hope the music makes them feel stronger and helps them to grow. I hope it shows them how to love one another\, and how to love themselves.”\nNatalie Soma\nNatalie Soma is mix of Sara Bareilles meets Alicia Keys- both of which\, who have had the most influence. Natalie blends classical piano with pop\, where her soulful grooves & crystal clear timbre has plenty of sultry sass. Natalie was raised in Boise ID where she attended Boise State for music and went onto teaching music professionally in her studio\, Soma Music LLC. Natalie has been playing live music around the Treasure Valley as well as internationally as a Dueling Pianist on the MSC Seashore.\nMORE INFO\nidahobotanicalgarden.org/greatgardenescape\ntheduckclub.com\nAdvance:\n$12 Members & Youth (ages 4-12)\n$15 Non-Member\nChildren 3 and younger are free.\nAt the Gate:\n$15 Members\, Non-Members\, AARP & Youth (ages 4-12)\nChildren 3 and younger are free.\nTickets are available in advance only and must be purchased online.\nTickets will be available to purchase online until sold out\, or until the start of show.\nE-tickets (delivered in a separate e-mail) can be taken straight to the gate to be taken the night of. SUMMARY:EMO NITE
DESCRIPTION:KNITTING FACTORY – BOISE\n416 S. 9TH ST. – BOISE\, ID 83702\nFRI\nJUNE 30\n9:00 PM\n(DOORS: 9:00 PM)\n18 AND UP \n$1 from every ticket sold will be donated to Living The Dream Foundation. \nNot a band. Not DJ’s. We throw parties for the music we love. \nAs Rolling Stone observed a few years ago\, “Emo Nite Vindicated the Scene.” \nSince they threw their first party at an East L.A. dive bar\, Morgan Freed and T.J. Petracca\, and a dedicated crew of regular attendees\, built Emo Nite into a phenomenon. Top-tier emo artists\, old and new\, curate playlists and perform\, with guest lists boasting members of blink-182\, All Time Low\, Dashboard Confessional\, The Maine\, and Good Charlotte. Scene-friendly pop culture mavericks often participate\, like past attendees Post Malone\, Demi Lovato\, Machine Gun Kelly\, and Skrillex. \nIt’s all too easy to forget that before the first Emo Nite in December 2014\, “emo” was a joke. \nSomehow on its journey from a melodic post-hardcore subgenre\, built on earnest emotional expression\, to a mainstream moniker assigned to anything remotely angsty\, “emo” became a dirty word. Despite the positive impact ushered in by waves of bands\, from the crucial “Revolution Summer” and Sunny Day Real Estate through Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance\, accepting “emo” as a dismissive designation or identity invited polite embarrassment and even scorn. \nBut Freed and Petracca grew up loving the music associated with emo and the people like them who similarly embraced outsider art and subculture\, regardless of changing fashions or pretentious snobbery. Petracca told The New Yorker the idea behind the first Emo Nite celebration was to center a happy\, communal experience on the music they once listened to when they were upset and alone. \n“I sang Dashboard Confessional at karaoke at a friend’s birthday party and thought it was super fun to go out with friends and listen to music we actually liked\,” recalls Petracca\, who met Freed when the pair worked at a creative agency together. “Every other club in LA played EDM\, Top 40\, or hip-hop. We always found ourselves pre-gaming with emo and pop-punk music before we went out.” \nFreed knew a bartender at the Short Stop in Echo Park and convinced him to let them throw a party on a random\, rainy Tuesday. They invited friends via Facebook; double the bar’s capacity turned up. “We decided to see how far we could take it\,” Petracca says. “‘Who would be the craziest guest?’ We invited Mark Hoppus\, and he came! He did our first one at Echoplex\, which was our third party ever.” \n“There’s no disconnect between the artist and fan\,” Freed points out. “I think that’s brought people closer to the music. It created a really strong sense of community\, at a time when emo wasn’t ‘cool.’” \nThere may be a surprise acoustic set or even a full-band performance\, but ultimately\, it’s about the experience. Emo Nite turned a party into a community\, reclaiming the spirit of how the scene began. \nIt’s now a recurring event thrown by dozens of friends in over 30 cities in the United States. Emo Nite runs full-day festivals and curates coveted performance spots at Coachella\, Life is Beautiful\, and Firefly. Freed and Petracca launched successful clothing collaborations with brands like OBEY\, Urban Outfitters\, PLEASURES\, The Hundreds\, Rose in Good Faith\, Market\, and OWSLA. \n“A larger promoter told us the shelf life of a club night in Los Angeles was two years\,” Freed says\, marveling at Emo Nite’s staying power. “A hundred percent of it is the people that go to it. This music makes people feel connected. The energy of it is so special. You get a group of people together who look different\, but they have this thing in common. We started seeing friend groups form really\, really quickly. People met their significant others at these events. The community really trusts each other.” \n“Emo Nite LA has become an essential gathering point for fans of emo\, pop-punk\, and related styles\,” Rolling Stone noted. \nIn October 2021\, Emo Nite’s founders threw Emo Nite Vegas Vacation\, a three-day event headlined by Avril Lavigne and Machine Gun Kelly\, with Sleeping With Sirens\, MOD SUN\, 3OH!3\, and more. \n“What Emo Nite does better than any of their competitors is they make ‘emo culture’ feel both nostalgic and brand new\,” The Summer Set’s Brian Logan Dales told Forbes\, in a profile which included professions of love from members of Papa Roach\, Underoath\, and State Champs. “You can go to an Emo Nite with your best friends and sing along to old songs you grew up with\, and at the same time\, discover a brand-new artist who’s making music today because they grew up on that very same music as you. They’ve taken the emo of the past and helped it forge a new path for the future.” \nAs emo reenters popular culture with a blend of adoring nostalgia and optimistic forward- thinking\, Emo Nite remains an authentic space to celebrate diversity\, experience passionate catharsis\, and champion authentic expression. Emo Nite isn’t a band or a DJ crew. It’s an idea\, one as simple as the urge to throw a party for a beloved style of music. Often imitated but never truly duplicated\, Emo Nite’s founders and supporters are fond of saying\, “If you don’t see the grave\, it ain’t our rave.” \n“There’s a lot of ownership from our community of the event itself and the Emo Nite brand\,” Petracca says. “It’s about breaking down that barrier of ‘Look at me\, it’s all about me.’ No\, it’s about us\, together\, in this room. It belongs to every single person that comes through the door.”\nThe co-founders continue to look ahead. “Emo Nite definitely impacted culture\,” Freed notes. “But we have no plans to stop changing the way we view the evolution and expansion of the genre.”
