SUMMARY:FUTUREBIRDS
DESCRIPTION:Rock juggernaut Futurebirds’ newest EP\, Bloomin’ Too\, is a benchmark that not only celebrates 13 years together\, it’s also a testament to the sheer iron will of a group of musicians hungry for the fruits of its labor. \n“Futurebirds is the best it’s been right now\, far and away\,” says singer/guitarist Carter King. “We’ve been unintentionally carving out our own space since the beginning\, since we never exactly fit in anywhere else musically. We were always too indie rock for the jam festival\, too country for the indie scene\, a little too psych-rock to feel like we were Americana. The music over the years just kind of created its own weird little ecosystem — it’s thriving and it feels great.” \nThe Athens\, Georgia-based group once again tapped storied My Morning Jacket guitarist/producer Carl Broemel in the latest chapter of this seamless\, bountiful partnership that initially came to fruition with the 2021 EP\, Bloomin.’ \n“Carl is extremely perceptive and an all-around smart dude. He’s really in tune with what the band is and what it strives to be. He’s engaged and understands our vision\,” King says. “He’s a longtime hero of ours\, and now is a friend and collaborator. It’s wild. And it’s great to be able to defer to someone you respect so much with creative decisions in the studio — we don’t just give that trust to just anybody.” \nCaptured this past spring at the legendary Ronnie’s Place in Nashville\, Tennessee\, the seven-song Bloomin’ Too is a vortex of sonic textures. The album ricochets from cosmic space\, rock to rough around the edges\, alt-country dreamscapes\, sandy beach bum odes to kick in your step pop ballads — all signature tones and musical avenues at the core of the Birds’ wide musical palette. \n“This is probably the quickest turnaround we’ve ever had for a record — we felt confident right when we got into the studio and just cranked it out\,” says singer/guitarist Daniel Womack. “All of our frequencies are aligned as a band\, where we’ve got this free-flow of ideas happening. We’re all on the same page right now and we have a lot of momentum going.” \nFor Broemel\, he finds a sincere kinship and solidarity with Futurebirds. Witnessing first-hand the band’s blue-collar work ethic in the studio\, Broemel was impressed and inspired by the ‘Birds’ democratic ways and means in how music is created and cultivated in the studio. \n“Futurebirds have this unique vibe with three singer-songwriters in the band\, where everyone is constantly shifting their function depending on the song\,” Broemel says. “Everyone just kind of falls into place and finds something to contribute. Someone will lead the charge on one song\, then fall back and let another take charge on the next — it’s something rare to see and behold in rock music\, where normally there’s just one songwriter and one leader.” \nThat camaraderie between founding members King\, Womack\, singer/guitarist Thomas Johnson and bassist Brannen Miles began when they were college students at the University of Georgia. In recent years\, the quartet has added pedal steel player Kiffy Myers\, keyboardist Spencer Thomas and drummer Tom Myers. \n“It’s the best feeling in the world to be up there onstage\, to look across and see these other super talented dudes all stoked to be there\,” King says. “We’re brothers and family and all that\, but what’s truly most impressive is that we’ve remained good friends on top of that. At the end of the day\, for us\, it’s always been about having a good time. That’s what keeps this thing moving.” \nFrom there\, it’s been endless miles on that old lost highway. It’s this rollercoaster of emotions\, thoughts and actions — gig after gig\, year after year — where now the band will be making its debut at Red Rocks Amphitheatre for a highly-anticipated two-night run (Oct. 3-4) alongside indie-rock darlings Caamp. \n“It was pure elation when we were offered Red Rocks\,” Womack says. “Everything we’ve been working towards has always included being able to play Red Rocks someday — it’s a big win for us and such a gratifying feeling.” \nAnd though Futurebirds have offered up another instant classic release with Bloomin’ Too\, the foundation of the group’s ethos\, attitude\, and rabid fan base remains its live shows — these undulating waves of sound\, energy and passion spilling out onto the audience in this two-way street of respect and admiration. \n“The line between the stage and the audience has always been blurred\, and we’ve definitely carried ourselves that way since the beginning\,” Womack says. “The early days of rock-n-roll were about the mysticism surrounding musicians and bands. That’s never been us. We want to embrace our fans\, to actually hang out and get to know them — they’re all part of the BirdFam.'” \nReflecting on the last 13 years\, King can only shake his head in awe of what has transpired over that time period for Futurebirds\, personally and professionally. From playing empty dive bars to selling out theaters coast to coast\, from college kids to now husbands and fathers — the sacred flame of music\, creativity and performance continually cradling and nurturing deeply-held dreams. \n“You start out doing this solely because it’s fun and you have no preconceived notion of what’s going to happen or what it should be. And then\, you get a taste of this possibly being your actual life\,” King says. “Maybe you get too serious about it\, or too wrapped up in how you are being received\, or the industry watermarks of success. But\, life’s just a perception game. It’s about having fun and aligning yourself with the right people. The community that’s built up around us has made it real easy to peel back all that brush and noise and see this thing for what it really is.”

SUMMARY:GWAR\, NONPOINT\, VOICE OF TREASON
DESCRIPTION:Blood. Spectacle. Lifestyle. Mythology.Costumes. And more blood. When you think of beloved shock-metal outfit GWAR\, those words are likely the first that cometo mind. And with good reason. Since forming in Richmond\, Virginia in 1984\, GWAR have notonly managed to endure through various lineup changes\, but have become one of the mostbeloved bands in all of metal. The only thing as sharp as their over-the-top lyrics is theirmesmerizing live show which continues to make them one of the must-see\, and mostmemorable\, acts today. At a time when bands have become bland\, GWAR stand out for their performances and theintimate connection with their fans.Once the lights dim and the curtain rises\, fans know whatthey’re in for: a night of theatrics\, storytelling and humor that’s more Devo than KISS.Theiriconic\, signature barbaric interplanetary warriors costumes may be what the wider world knowsthem for\, but it’s their shows that continues to resonate with their devoted following. The push-and-pull between GWAR and their fans creates a visceral experience that continuesto add to the band’s legend and legacy\, one new tour at a time. Few\, if any band\, can breakdown a physical barrier with their audience quite like GWAR. Fluids fly\, substances spray andthe lust for copious amounts of fake blood [and cutting heads off\, of course] leaves audiencesthirsty for more. The mythological nature of their live shows may be at the forefront of people’s minds\, but it isGWAR’s meticulously crafted songs blending satire\, chaos and violence\, made them culturalicons. In late 2020\, GWAR celebrated the 30th anniversary ofScumdogs of the Universe\, which wonthem universal praise for theirsharpsriffs and humor. More importantly\, it catapulted them intothe mainstream psyche\, capturing the eyes and ears of a bewildered public. Though a Grammywould follow a few years later\,Scumdogsremains the band’s seminal album. It received adeluxe reissue in October 2020 included remixed and remastered audio by producer RonanChris Murphy\, as well as an exclusive cassette containing rehearsal demos and previouslyunreleased tracks. As for 2021 and beyond\, the group have big plans to add to their legacyas they near their 37thyear. A much-anticipated new album is in the works\, their first since 2017’sThe Blood of Gods. They also have a skateboard deck\, coffee\, CBD\, beer\, whiskey\, proving the band is bigger thanthe music: it’s a lifestyle.A flurry of activity (pandemic-permitting) is on the horizon. So why does the band forge on andthe crowd keep coming back? It comes down to one word: fun. Between that and the shock-and-awe of a GWAR show\, it’s easy to understand why they’ve endured\, but are as popular asthey’ve ever been:limitless creativity and blood — a whole lot of it.\nNothing can stop Nonpoint. \nThe band continues to deliver unique\, uncompromising\, and undeniable hard rock on its self-titled ninth studio album and first for Razor & Tie. Weathering lineup changes\, label shifts\, and other trials and tribulations\, founding members Elias Soriano [vocals] and Robb Rivera [drums] regrouped with fresh blood—Dave Lizzio [guitar]\, Adam Wolosyzn [bass]\, and Rasheed Thomas [guitar]—and captured pure fire this time around. Now\, you might just get burned if you’re in their way… \nIn the spring of 2011\, Nonpoint experienced something of a rebirth. After touring heavily behind Miracle\, they underwent a creative overhaul with the addition of Lizzio\, Wolosyzn\, and Thomas. At the same time\, Rivera stresses that preserving the outfit’s initial integrity proved paramount to songwriting. \n“Basically\, we wanted to go back to where we came from\,” he affirms. “Take our first four albums\, throw them in a blender\, and this is what you get. Elias wrote some of his deepest lyrics and spit rage in the booth. When it came to the guitars\, Dave and Rasheed brought in genuine technical talent. It’s old school with some new flavors.” \nSoriano adds\, “We wanted this record to be a punch in the face. Dealing with lawyers and losing members\, the last year was obviously very difficult. I also had just become a father around the same time. There was a lot of stuff I wanted to artistically vent about.” \nIn order to transfer that energy to tape\, they enlisted the talents of Grammy Award-nominated producer Johnny K [Disturbed\, Staind\, Megadeth] for the first time. They holed up in his Groovemaster Recording Studios in February 2012 and emerged with 12 of the most raw and real songs of their 15-year career. Johnny pushed them to expand their patented sound\, while simultaneously sticking to their guns. \n“He challenged each of us instrumentally\,” Rivera elaborates. “He brought out anger and angst that we haven’t felt in a long time. We’re known as a live act\, and he paid attention to that fact. We built this on the road. This record sounds like war coming out of the speakers.” \nThe first single “Left For You” slides from an intense riff into a hypnotic verse punctuated by an infectious chorus. Produced and mixed by Brian Virtue [30 Seconds to Mars\, Chevelle] in Nashville\, it’s immediately explosive. Lyrically\, the singer doesn’t hold anything back either. \n“It’s about that moment where being discreet or cordial gets thrown out the window\,” he reveals. “You realize you’re fighting for a relationship—whether it’s romantic\, business\, or social—that you don’t really want anymore. You say fuck it and never revisit that friendship again.” \nNonpoint opened up the floodgates to the album by unleashing one of its heaviest tracks\, “I Said It\,” as a free download their Facebook page in the summer of 2012. The fans responded with overwhelming enthusiasm\, welcoming the onslaught. Showcasing dynamic vocal delivery and a groove-driven stomp\, it’s perfect for the pit. \n“We set the DNA of the record with that song\,” the vocalist smiles. “It’s very aggressive and in-your-face. You can think of it as ‘Bullet with a Name 2012’. It’s a good old fashioned Nonpoint song you can bang in the gym.” As a whole\, the album feels like a declaration for the band. They’ve never given up\, and it’s not even an option. This is who they are\, and they’re making music which reflects their spirit. \n“It’s a fresh start for us\,” Soriano states. “We felt like having a self-titled record says it all. We hit the reset button\, and there’s life again. You can hear it musically. We’re not going anywhere.” \nIn addition\, they remain one of the most consistent and incendiary live acts on the scene. Having shared the stage with everyone from Sevendust and Stone Sour to Papa Roach and Buckcherry as well as appearing at festivals such as OZZfest and the UK’s Download\, each performance stands out as an experience their fan base fervently follows. \nThe quintet also inked a deal with Razor & Tie in 2011\, setting the stage for this next phase. “It was the most natural thing\,” says Rivera. “They have an incredible team\, and they sought us out. We’re experienced to begin this chapter together.” \nOver the course of their nine previous releases\, Nonpoint sold over 750\,000 albums in North America alone. In addition to fan favorites like “What a Day” and “Circles”\, their biggest radio hit to date “Bullet With a Name” reached #22 on the Mainstream Rock Charts and was featured in the hit video game WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 as well as the 2007 film The Condemned. Meanwhile\, their cover of Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight” was the theme song for the film Miami Vice and hit the Mainstream Rock Charts. \nAt the end of the day\, Rivera wants to give back via the music. “We try to help people through our art\,” he exclaims. “So many kids have connected to our songs over the years\, and they’ve supported us unconditionally. We fought through so much\, and we never gave up. I hope they get a positive message from this album.” \nSoriano concludes\, “It doesn’t feel like we have some kind of goal. It feels like we have a purpose\, which is to put out hopeful music. When this process started\, a fuse got lit. We’re not stopping until it all burns.” Their flame will only rise higher.

SUMMARY:EMO NITE
DESCRIPTION:Not a band. Not DJ’s. We throw parties for the music we love. \nAs Rolling Stone observed a few years ago\, “Emo Nite Vindicated the Scene.” \nSince they threw their first party at an East L.A. dive bar\, Morgan Freed and T.J. Petracca\, and a dedicated crew of regular attendees\, built Emo Nite into a phenomenon. Top-tier emo artists\, old and new\, curate playlists and perform\, with guest lists boasting members of blink-182\, All Time Low\, Dashboard Confessional\, The Maine\, and Good Charlotte. Scene-friendly pop culture mavericks often participate\, like past attendees Post Malone\, Demi Lovato\, Machine Gun Kelly\, and Skrillex. \nIt’s all too easy to forget that before the first Emo Nite in December 2014\, “emo” was a joke. \nSomehow on its journey from a melodic post-hardcore subgenre\, built on earnest emotional expression\, to a mainstream moniker assigned to anything remotely angsty\, “emo” became a dirty word. Despite the positive impact ushered in by waves of bands\, from the crucial “Revolution Summer” and Sunny Day Real Estate through Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance\, accepting “emo” as a dismissive designation or identity invited polite embarrassment and even scorn. \nBut Freed and Petracca grew up loving the music associated with emo and the people like them who similarly embraced outsider art and subculture\, regardless of changing fashions or pretentious snobbery. Petracca told The New Yorker the idea behind the first Emo Nite celebration was to center a happy\, communal experience on the music they once listened to when they were upset and alone. \n“I sang Dashboard Confessional at karaoke at a friend’s birthday party and thought it was super fun to go out with friends and listen to music we actually liked\,” recalls Petracca\, who met Freed when the pair worked at a creative agency together. “Every other club in LA played EDM\, Top 40\, or hip-hop. We always found ourselves pre-gaming with emo and pop-punk music before we went out.” \nFreed knew a bartender at the Short Stop in Echo Park and convinced him to let them throw a party on a random\, rainy Tuesday. They invited friends via Facebook; double the bar’s capacity turned up. “We decided to see how far we could take it\,” Petracca says. “‘Who would be the craziest guest?’ We invited Mark Hoppus\, and he came! He did our first one at Echoplex\, which was our third party ever.” \n“There’s no disconnect between the artist and fan\,” Freed points out. “I think that’s brought people closer to the music. It created a really strong sense of community\, at a time when emo wasn’t ‘cool.’” \nThere may be a surprise acoustic set or even a full-band performance\, but ultimately\, it’s about the experience. Emo Nite turned a party into a community\, reclaiming the spirit of how the scene began. \nIt’s now a recurring event thrown by dozens of friends in over 30 cities in the United States. Emo Nite runs full-day festivals and curates coveted performance spots at Coachella\, Life is Beautiful\, and Firefly. Freed and Petracca launched successful clothing collaborations with brands like OBEY\, Urban Outfitters\, PLEASURES\, The Hundreds\, Rose in Good Faith\, Market\, and OWSLA. \n“A larger promoter told us the shelf life of a club night in Los Angeles was two years\,” Freed says\, marveling at Emo Nite’s staying power. “A hundred percent of it is the people that go to it. This music makes people feel connected. The energy of it is so special. You get a group of people together who look different\, but they have this thing in common. We started seeing friend groups form really\, really quickly. People met their significant others at these events. The community really trusts each other.” \n“Emo Nite LA has become an essential gathering point for fans of emo\, pop-punk\, and related styles\,” Rolling Stone noted. \nIn October 2021\, Emo Nite’s founders threw Emo Nite Vegas Vacation\, a three-day event headlined by Avril Lavigne and Machine Gun Kelly\, with Sleeping With Sirens\, MOD SUN\, 3OH!3\, and more. \n“What Emo Nite does better than any of their competitors is they make ‘emo culture’ feel both nostalgic and brand new\,” The Summer Set’s Brian Logan Dales told Forbes\, in a profile which included professions of love from members of Papa Roach\, Underoath\, and State Champs. “You can go to an Emo Nite with your best friends and sing along to old songs you grew up with\, and at the same time\, discover a brand-new artist who’s making music today because they grew up on that very same music as you. They’ve taken the emo of the past and helped it forge a new path for the future.” \nAs emo reenters popular culture with a blend of adoring nostalgia and optimistic forward- thinking\, Emo Nite remains an authentic space to celebrate diversity\, experience passionate catharsis\, and champion authentic expression. Emo Nite isn’t a band or a DJ crew. It’s an idea\, one as simple as the urge to throw a party for a beloved style of music. Often imitated but never truly duplicated\, Emo Nite’s founders and supporters are fond of saying\, “If you don’t see the grave\, it ain’t our rave.” \n“There’s a lot of ownership from our community of the event itself and the Emo Nite brand\,” Petracca says. “It’s about breaking down that barrier of ‘Look at me\, it’s all about me.’ No\, it’s about us\, together\, in this room. It belongs to every single person that comes through the door.”\nThe co-founders continue to look ahead. “Emo Nite definitely impacted culture\,” Freed notes. “But we have no plans to stop changing the way we view the evolution and expansion of the genre.”
