SUMMARY:EMILY NENNI\, RYAN CURTIS
DESCRIPTION:Hailing from the Bay Area of California\, Emily Nenni grew up listening to the girl groups of the 1960s. Some of her earliest memories were listening to 60s compilation CDs in the back of her parents car on the way to the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. As a young girl\, her mother would clean the house to Patsy Cline\, and from here her interest in country music began. Throughout middle school and high school her musical tastes only broadened\, including Bruce Springsteen (thanks to her Father)\, and the Kinks (also thanks to her father). Add in some ranchera flair and Frida Kahlo aesthetics and Emily Nenni’s style was starting to form. \nAfter completing a year of school at Columbia College in Chicago\, IL country music was still calling her name and Emily decided Nashville was the place to go. The month after she turned 21 she had already found herself in Nashville\, on lower broadway\, at Roberts Western World. She bribed the doorman with cookies so she could stand by the door\, directly next to the band. Those same cookies also bribed the band to let her get on stage and sing. From the moment she opened her mouth the Traditional country crew at Roberts Western World knew they had found another one of their own. \nShe quickly began recording her first solo album project\, all the while playing shows around the local dives of Nashville. With the help of Mike Eli\, a local guitar player whom she met at Roberts\, the album took shape. Featuring some of the best local players from around the area her first album combines the best of Capitol Records west coast country\, the strong female voices of the late 1950s and early 1960s\, and the sass and abandon of the 1970s outlaw country movement. Emily Nenni is at the same time vulnerable\, and strong; delicate and in your face. Her honest writing is accessible and genuine and keeps us wanting more. \nIn December of 2017 Emily Nenni released her first three singles\, including the title track “Hell of a Woman” on all digital platforms.

SUMMARY:CLUTCH NO STARS ABOVE TOUR
DESCRIPTION:Forget whatever you thought about Clutch. Earth Rocker crumples up the bad categories that have miscast them for years — stoner rock\, post-hardcore\, metal\, grunge — and leaves no question about what they are: a damn good rock and roll band. \nEarth Rocker is a solid\, straight-up rock and roll album\, exactly what the band had in mind for their tenth studio album\, now that their Weathermaker Recordslabel is fully up and running. “It might be the best Clutch album that has ever existed\,” says guitarist Tim Sult. \nIt’s a concise\, efficient album. That was the point\, says drummer Jean-Paul Gaster. “We really tried to reign in the jam aspect of the band. We like to improvise a lot\, but this album\, we really wanted stuff mapped out. We wanted to go into the studio fully armed to make a really powerful record.” \n“I’m excited about its succinctness\, and how balls-to-the-wall it is\,” says frontman Neil Fallon. “The length of an LP is optimal for enjoying a body of new music\, approximately 40- 45 minutes. There’s something to be said about Side A and Side B. It’s more cinematic\, and that was the approach.” \nThe album began taking shape when Clutch toured with Mötorhead\, then Thin Lizzy. Revisiting those two favorite bands\, they were able to apply their own experience as musicians to better understand the dynamics of their heroes. “The songwriting process happened around the time of those tours\, so that really sank into our writing\,” Sult recalls. “Maybe people expected us to go more acoustic or bluesy\, but this album definitely showcases a riffs-in-your-face kind of style. These songs ended up being faster and a bit more rocking.” \n“Overall\, we wanted the album to pick up the pace a little bit\,” bassist Dan Maines explains. “Songs developing at a faster tempo led to a very straightforward songwriting approach.” \nThat songwriting simplicity is also indirectly a result of the Basket Of Eggs EP issued two years ago with the Weathermaker re-release of Blast Tyrant. “That acoustic stuff represents a new style of writing for us\,” Maines says. “It kind of forces you to strip down what you’re playing. We had almost two years to spend on the writing process\, and we had a lot of ideas. Having two years allowed us to trim the fat.” \nClutch are passionate students of rock and roll\, and music in general. Gaster’s love of a good shuffle brought that rhythmic approach to nearly half the album. Professor Longhair’s “Bald Head” — notably the loping style of Earl Palmer’s swinging eight notes — was a direct influence on Earth Rocker. So was Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey\, also a shuffle monster. \n“When you hear a light shuffle\, or the brushwork on ‘Gone Cold\,’ at first it can be a head- scratcher\,” says Fallon. “But when you join in\, you will be taken to a place you wouldn’t have gone by yourself.” \nFallon’s reputation as a clever lyricist will likely grow once people hear Earth Rocker. His approach is similar to writing fiction. “You’ve got to do it convincingly. There’s a bit of theater to it\, in a way. The four minutes a song is being recorded or performed\, I can convince myself that I’m an expert on whatever subject I’m singing about\, even if I don’t know exactly what it is.” \n“There are some tips of the hat to rock and roll history in the lyrics that I enjoy singing because they reference the album in a bigger picture. ‘Rocket 88’ is considered the first rock and roll song that used distortion. That lyrical reference on ‘Crucial Velocity’ kind of fuels Earth Rocker as a whole with that back story. It’s American myth\, even though it really happened.” \nNot everything on Earth Rocker is strictly vintage rock and roll. Maines made sure his love of the aggression and minimalism of Bad Brains and Fugazi was applied to these tracks. “The simpler the better\, and I really tried to keep it streamlined and a little more focused. \nWhatever came to mind first was pretty much what I stuck with throughout the whole recording process. I didn’t feel the need to try to over complicate the parts.” \nThe influence of their favorite bands might have inspired Earth Rocker\, but continuous growth as players also affected the album. “You wouldn’t have a song like ‘Earth Rocker’ five years ago\,” Gaster insists. “We’ve continued to grow on our instruments\, finding our own voices. Hopefully\, you hear that on the new songs.” \nBehind the scenes\, Earth Rocker is also a result of an inordinate amount of preparation for Clutch. The album was entirely plotted out before recording even started at The Machine Shop in Belleville\, NJ\, with veteran producer Machine. “In the past\, we would go into the studio and write\,” says Fallon. “That never worked out to anyone’s satisfaction. It was really important to do a lot of pre-production\, knowing exactly what we would be doing when we went into the studio. It was crucial that we did all that prior to hitting record.” \n“It was so mapped out that we weren’t even in the studio together. You had to take a lot on faith. But once you know a part inside and out\, you can move on to worrying about performance. If you’re trying to remember it\, then you’re not playing from the heart — you’re playing from the brain. That always sounds stale on playback.” \nThe Earth Rocker sessions were largely based on faith for Sult\, a guitarist more attuned to riffs than solos. “I would have never expected to be playing as many solos\,” he says. “On this album\, they definitely had more of a direction than they usually do. It definitely took a lot more concentration\, but I walked away from this album liking them more than I have on any other album.”\n“I just decided to trust the producer this time and not try to second guess too much. Having Machine there really helped. He’s very opinionated on what it should be\, as far as performance goes. He definitely pushed us in a direction we normally wouldn’t go.”\nIt was Machine’s idea to replicate the flow of their live set with the running order of Earth Rocker. “He kind of made a set list of songs we do live at festivals\,” Fallon explains. “He wanted to reproduce that energy in an album. He pointed things out to us\, bringing us back to listening to ourselves as a fan would\, to make an album that could be played beginning to end at a show\, and everyone would dig it.”\n“There’s a certain energy to our shows that we’ve had difficulty capturing on tape\,” Maines admits. “I think this record comes closer to really capturing that energy of Clutch live. It’s a very balanced album. There’s no B-side material. It’s an album of A-sides. That sounds pretty bold and confident\, but that’s the way we feel about Earth Rocker.”

SUMMARY:Iris DeMent
DESCRIPTION:On her transcendent new record\, Workin’ On A World\, Iris DeMent faces the modern world — as it is right now — with its climate catastrophe\, pandemic illness\, and epidemic of violence and social injustice — and not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world\, but implores us to love each other\, despite our very different ways of seeing. Her songs are her way of healing our broken inner and outer spaces. \nWith an inimitable voice as John Prine described\, “like you’ve heard\, but not really\,” and unforgettable melodies rooted in hymns\, gospel\, and old country music\, she’s simply one of the finest singer-songwriters in America as well as one of our fiercest advocates for human rights. Her debut record Infamous Angel\, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary\, was recently named one of the “greatest country albums of all time” by Rolling Stone\, and the two albums that followed\, My Life and The Way I Should\, were both nominated for GRAMMYs. From there\, DeMent released three records on her own label\, Flariella Records\, the most recent of which\, The Trackless Woods (2015)\, was hailed as “a quietly powerful triumph” by The Guardian. DeMent’s songs have also been featured in film (True Grit) and television (The Leftovers) and recorded by numerous artists. Fittingly\, she received the Americana Music Trailblazer Award in 2017. \nWorkin’ On A World\, her seventh album\, started with the worry that woke DeMent up after the 2016 elections: how can we survive this? “Every day some new trauma was being added to the old ones that kept repeating themselves\, and like everybody else\, I was just trying to bear up under it all\,” she recalls. She returned to a truth she had known since childhood: music is medicine. “My mom always had a way of finding the song that would prove equal to whatever situation we were facing. Throughout my life\, songs have been lending me a hand. Writing songs\, singing songs\, putting them on records\, has been a way for me to extend that hand to others.” \nWith grace\, courage\, and soul\, Iris shares 13 anthems — love songs\, really — to and for our broken inner and outer worlds. DeMent sets the stage for the album with the title track in which she moves from a sense of despair towards a place of promise. “Now I’m workin’ on a world I may never see / Joinin’ forces with the warriors of love / Who came before and will follow you and me.” \nShe summons various social justice warriors\, both past and present\, to deliver messages of optimism. “How Long” references Martin Luther King\, while “Warriors of Love” includes John Lewis and Rachel Corrie. “Goin’ Down To Sing in Texas” is an ode not only to gun control\, but also to the brave folks who speak out against tyranny and endure the consequences in an unjust world. “I kept hearing a lot of talk about the arc of history that Dr. King so famously said bends towards justice\,” she recalls. “I was having my doubts. But\, then it dawned on me\, he never said the arc would magically bend itself. Songs\, over the course of history\, have proven to be pretty good arc benders.” \nBending inward\, DeMent reaches agilely under the slippery surface of politics. She grapples with loss on the deeply honest “I Won’t Ask You Why\,” while encouraging compassion over hate in the awe-inspiring “Say A Good Word.” Album closer “Waycross\, Georgia\,” encompasses the end of the journey\, thanking those along the way. As she approaches subjects of aging\, loss\, suicide\, and service\, an arc of compassion elevated to something far beyond words is transmitted. The delicate fierceness encompassed in the riveting power of her voice has somehow only grown over time. \nStalled partway through by the pandemic\, the record took six years to make with the help of three friends and co-producers: Richard Bennett\, Pieta Brown\, and Jim Rooney. It was Pieta Brown who gave the record its final push. “Pieta asked me what had come of the recordings I’d done with Jim and Richard in 2019 and 2020. I told her I’d pretty much given up on trying to make a record. She asked would I mind if she had a listen. So\, I had everything we’d done sent over to her\, and not long after that I got a text\, bouncing with exclamation marks: ‘You have a record and it’s called Workin’ On A World!’” With Bennett back in the studio with them\, Brown and DeMent recorded several more songs and put the final touches on the record in Nashville in April of 2022. \nThe result is a hopeful album — shimmering with brilliant flashes of poignant humor and uplifting tenderness — that speaks the truth\, “in the way that truth is always hopeful\,” she explains. Reflecting on the lyrics of the song “The Sacred Now” (“see these walls/ let’s bring ‘em on down / it’s not a dream; it’s the sacred now”)\, DeMent is reminded of Jesus saying the Kingdom of God is within you and the Buddhist activist monk Thich Nhat Hanh saying the rose is in the compost; the compost is in the rose. On Workin’ On A World\, Iris DeMent demonstrates that songs are the healing and the healing arises through song

SUMMARY:WHITE REAPER
DESCRIPTION:The World’s Best American Band. \nThe bold statement from Louisville’s White Reaper is not only the title of their new album\, but also the band’s credo. \n“Because we are the best\,” says guitarist/vocalist Tony Esposito. “Just like Muhammad Ali was the greatest\, you gotta say it out loud for people to believe it.” \nAnd with that mentality the band hit the studio with close friend and producer Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket\, Young Widows) and made a good ol’ fashioned in-your-face rock ’n’ roll record. \n“We didn’t make this record or start this band because we wanted to come across in a single\, certain way\,” says Esposito. “We just make records that we’d want to hear. We started doing this because it’s fun as hell\, just as much now as it was when we were 14.” \nBoasting textured melodies\, layered guitars and more seasoned lyrics\, The World’s Best American Band finds the quartet busting out of the basement sound established on their previous full length (2015’s White Reaper Does It Again) and setting their sights on the arena. \nGarnished with glimpses of the golden age of rock and roll\, TWBAB is loaded with guitars that scream and gigantic drums in lockstep rhythm\, each song packing its own massive\, but none the less unique\, punch. Lead single “Judy French” struts like a runway model raised on Heavy Metal Parking Lot\, while midway point “The Stack” pairs a classic rock shimmy with a flair for glam. \nThe Kentucky boys eagerly await hitting the road in 2017. Armed with a record that celebrates rock in all of its glory\, they are poised to satisfy crowds whether they are packed shoulder-to-shoulder in the “standing room only” pit or kicking back in the cheap seats. \n“Come to the show\, have a drink\, have fun\,” laughs Esposito. “But be nice to everybody\, cause you’re gonna get real close.”
