SUMMARY:CALI CLASSIC TOUR WITH MACK 10\, WARREN G.\, DJ QUIK AND MORE!
DESCRIPTION:ARTISTS\nTHE CALI CLASSIC TOUR \nMACK 10 \nDuring the mid-’90s\, when West Coast rap reigned supreme\, Mack 10 emerged as a close associate of Ice Cube and enjoyed several years of considerable commercial success before his popularity faded toward the end of the decade. The Los Angeles-area rapper’s greatest success came early in his career\, on the albums Mack 10 (1995)\, Bow Down (1996)\, Based on a True Story (1997)\, and The Recipe (1998)\, which between them included a string of notable hits (“Foe Life\,” “On Them Thangs\,” “Bow Down\,” “Gangstas Make the World Go Round\,” “Backyard Boogie\,” “Money’s Just a Touch Away”). Mack 10’s fortunes began to fade with The Paper Route (2000)\, his first album to fall short of either platinum or gold sales status\, and his first to not spawn a significant hit. Bang or Ball (2001)\, released by Cash Money Records\, signaled a new direction for Mack 10\, though it too failed to rival the commercial success of his mid- to late-’90s output. In subsequent years\, he jumped back and forth from independent to major-label status and struggled to re-establish himself in a substantially altered rap marketplace where West Coast gangsta rap had fallen out of favor. \nBorn Dedrick D’Mon Rolison on August 9\, 1971\, in Inglewood\, CA\, Mack 10 debuted on the Friday soundtrack (1995) with “Take a Hit.” A couple months later he made his album debut with Mack 10 (1995)\, released by Priority Records. Featuring production work and a couple guest raps from Ice Cube\, who was fresh from the success of his starring role in Friday\, Mack 10 spawned a couple chart hits (“Foe Life\,” “On Them Thangs”) and sold well\, charting number two on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 33 overall. One of the songs from Mack 10\, “Westside Slaughterhouse\,” was a collaboration with Ice Cube and WC (of WC and the Maad Circle). In 1996 these three Los Angeles rappers reunited for Bow Down\, a supergroup album credited to Westside Connection. The album proved very popular\, spawning a pair of chart hits (“Bow Down\,” “Gangstas Make the World Go Round”)\, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200\, and ultimately going platinum. Also in 1996\, Mack 10 made a couple soundtrack appearances: “Nothin’ But the Cavi Hit\,” from Rhyme & Reason\, and “Hoo-Bangin’\,” from The Substitute. His second solo album\, Based on a True Story (1997)\, continued the streak of commercial success\, charting at number 14 and spawning a Top 40 hit\, “Backyard Boogie.” \nThe follow-up album\, The Recipe (1998)\, was highly collaborative\, featuring guests on practically every song; it also served as the launching pad for Hoo-Bangin’ Records\, Mack 10’s personal label. The most popular single from The Recipe was “Money’s Just a Touch Away\,” featuring Gerald LeVert\, a number five hit on Billboard’s Top Rap Singles chart (number 54 overall). Hoo-Bangin’: The Mix Tape (1999) in turn showcased the label’s roster\, which included MC Eiht\, Techniec\, CJ Mac\, the Comrads\, and Chilldrin of da Ghetto. The Paper Route (2000) followed and\, though it charted fairly well initially\, at number 19 (relative to number 15\, the peak position of its predecessor)\, over time it proved considerably less popular than any of Mack 10’s previous releases. Neither of The Paper Route’s singles (“From tha Streetz\,” “Tight to Def” — the latter featuring T-Boz [of TLC]\, whom Mack 10 married in 2000) broke the Billboard Hot 100; though it wasn’t released as a single\, the album notably includes a star-studded collaboration with Timbaland\, Ice Cube\, and WC\, “Nobody.” \nMack 10 left Priority Records at this point in time (for the label was being merged into Capitol) and signed a one-album deal with Cash Money Records. The partnership was surprising. Cash Money was a leading Dirty South label with a small roster of in-house rappers such as Juvenile and Lil Wayne; however\, the label was looking to expand its roster as well as its geographical reach\, and Mack 10 offered it a great opportunity to unite the West Coast and Dirty South. The resulting album\, Bang or Ball (2001)\, certainly signaled a new direction for Mack 10\, who sounded comfortable working with Cash Money’s in-house producer\, Manny Fresh. “Hate in Yo Eyes\,” a Dr. Dre/Scott Storch production driven by an interpolation of “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees\, was the only single from Bang or Ball to chart (and barely at that\, peaking at number 98 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart); the other singles released were “Do tha Damn Thing” and “Connected for Life.” Another Hoo-Bangin’ showcase\, Mack 10 Presents da Hood (2002)\, followed\, featuring the label’s new roster (K Mac\, Deviossi\, Skoop\, Cousteau\, Techniec) as well as a regional anthem\, “L.A. for Ya.” \nMack 10 returned in a big way in 2003\, with both a solo album (Ghetto\, Gutter & Gangster) and a Westside Connection reunion (Terrorist Threats). While Ghetto\, Gutter & Gangster\, released independently by Bungalo\, sold poorly (despite spawning a chart hit\, “Lights Out”)\, Terrorist Threats\, released by Capitol\, sold relatively well\, going gold thanks partly to a warm reception for the single “Gangsta Nation.” Mack 10’s next album\, Hustla’s Handbook (2005)\, was his return to the majors; like Terrorist Threats\, it was released by Capitol. Even with major-label promotion and a strong lead single\, “Like This” (featuring Nate Dogg)\, Hustla’s Handbook climbed to only number 65 on the Billboard 200; with the exception of its independently released precedessor (which didn’t even break the Top 100)\, this was Mack 10’s lowest-charting album to date and didn’t bode well for his major-label future. In 2007 Capitol/Priority released Foe Life: The Best of Mack 10\, a career-spanning compilation. ~ Jason Birchmeier\, Rovi

SUMMARY:MATISYAHU
DESCRIPTION:KNITTING FACTORY – BOISE\n416 S. 9TH ST. – BOISE\, ID 83702\nTUE\nJUNE 6\n8:00 PM\n(DOORS: 7:00 PM)\nALL AGES \nSince first emerging on the international stage in 2005\, Matisyahu has established a reputation for following his muse—from the stripped-down roots reggae of the gold-certified Live at Stubb’s to the trippy ministrations of Youth to the polished pop eclecticism of Light. Then\, in 2010\, he returned to the venerable Austin venue that introduced him for Live at Stubb’s II\, demonstrating that all those travels had somehow only strengthened his connection to his musical bedrock. It was a whirlwind half-decade journey\, one that earned Matisyahu a place in pop culture at large. \nAnd it was only the beginning. \nNow based with his family in Los Angeles\, Matisyahu blasts off yet again with Spark Seeker\, a bold new studio album that finds the one-of-a-kind vocalist and songwriter exploring uncharted territory with help from an expansive cast of collaborators. “My musical tastes are all over the board\,” he says in reference to a record that mixes ancient traditional sounds with futuristic electro beats\, rapping with singing\, songs of the spirit with songs of the body. “And\, besides\, my music has never been about the outer garment. It’s about searching out inspiration wherever it lies. This album is about seeking that spark within.” \nOuter garments\, of course\, long defined Matisyahu in the eyes of many. “I was the Hasidic reggae superstar\,” he says with a knowing laugh. So when Matisyahu took to Twitter late last year to post a picture of himself with his new look\, he did it with a certain amount of relief. “It just felt good to sort of restart everything\,” he says\, adding that the transformation actualized one of the central themes of Spark Seeker: the impermanence of the physical form. “The spark seeker digs for truth and meaning and is willing to let go of everything to find it. He’s honest and authentic with himself and lives life from the inside out. He creates music from the depths and doesn’t worry about what category it or he fits into.” \n“We live in a world where people tend to think in extremes and categorize with ultimate statements\,” Matisyahu says. “While it’s true that at one point it would’ve been pretty accurate to describe me as Hasidic reggae\, for most of my career my music has been a blend\, a mixture.” \nFor Spark Seeker—not just a collection of random tracks\, but a complete piece of work made with one producer—Matisyahu spent a year recording with Koool Kojak (Nicki Minaj\, Travis Barker\, Ke$ha) at the latter’s home studio in L.A. Then the pair went toIsrael with an open slate. “We booked a studio there and invited various friends and musicians—including Zohar Fresco\, Daniel Zamir\, Ravid Kahalani and rapper Shyne—to come and simply play music\,” Matisyahu says. “We began to blend all of this live instrumentation to create a unique record\, made by multi-faceted human beings who have many sides and many sources of inspiration.” \nThe result reflects that wide array of voices and experiences. In the hard-hitting “Warrior” Matisyahu describes feelings of frustration and desperation\, while lead single “Sunshine” rides what might be the most uplifting groove in his catalog; elsewhere\, “Searchin’” pairs a gritty digital-dancehall beat with chanted lyrics and “I Believe in Love” exemplifies the album’s deep melodic streak. Throughout Spark Seeker you can hear Matisyahu embodying the album’s title—and embracing its humble promise. The album has a depth to it as well as a lightness\, which alludes to the most essential theme of the record–that everything in life\, especially music\, exists in mixtures and blends. “Things are not as black and white as we would like to think. Not everything can be oversimplified\,” says Matisyahu. \n“This is definitely pushing the boundaries of what I’ve done before\,” he acknowledges. “It’s a new kind of record for me.” At this point we’d expect nothing less.

SUMMARY:PROF\, JUICE LORD\, BAYO\, WILLIE WONKA
DESCRIPTION:KNITTING FACTORY – BOISE\n416 S. 9TH ST. – BOISE\, ID 83702\nWED\nJUNE 7\n8:00 PM\n(DOORS: 7:00 PM) \nALL AGES\nWith lyrical skill matched only by his raucous live shows\, Prof has arrived on the national stage. Coming out of Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, Prof has perfected the art of combining blue collar hard work and unimpeachable content with never taking himself too seriously. His seventh studio album\, Horse\, due out on his own Stophouse Music Group label April 14\, 2023\, is set to let the world at large in on a secret that music fans already know\, Prof is a force to be reckoned with. \nHis most recent album\, Powderhorn Suites\, shocked pundits and industry alike with an amazing run through the charts and streaming platforms. Released in November\, 2020\, Powderhorn Suites reached a career-high #3 on the Billboard Current Rap Albums charts\, #5 Top New Artists Albums\, #15 Independent Album\, and #36 Billboard Top Albums. What followed has been a masterclass in making it as an independent artist; Prof leaned into the fantastical tales and dynamic persona that have cultivated his rabid fan base. He reclaimed his outlets\, going from zero Youtube followers to over 160\,000 subscribers in under two years. Following the Powderhorn Suites album\, Prof notched his biggest year to date in 2022\, racking up over 140 Million streams of his catalog and performing 30 sold out shows across the country. \nHorse is the culmination of his personal Rocky training montage\, but you can’t call it a comeback\, because Prof’s numbers have only ever gone up. Horse is a powerful record\, showcasing his singular drive and the weirdness of real life that has propelled Prof to the pinnacle of the independent rap music world\, bringing his legions of “Gampos”\, as his fans are affectionately known\, alongside him. Horse’s 14 tracks include a heavyweight cast of features\, from Method Man on “Subpar”\, to Kevin Gates’ big sound gracing “Devils Gate”\, and a brilliant appearance from Redman on “Pack a Lunch”. Prof’s contemporaries have clearly noticed the ever growing Gampo movement bursting out of the Twin Cities. Cozz and Mac Irv also appear on the album\, which was produced by Prof alongside a small cadre of close collaborators. \nProf will follow up the release of Horse with a XX city headline tour\, hitting marquee live music venues like YY and ZZ\, along with some key festival appearances. Riding life sized carpets over his massive crowds and leaving it all on the stage\, Prof’s live shows have always been more than a concert\, they are an experience. As the audiences grow and his production evolves\, Prof has moved from survival mode to takeover mode\, and one thing is for sure\, Prof thrives on the biggest stage.

SUMMARY:ALLEN STONE\, BROTHER ELSEY
DESCRIPTION:Along with immersing himself in a songwriting approach that involved unflinching examination of “some very dark and negative moments in my life\,” Stone shaped the sound and feel of Radius by pushing himself to “get past the boundaries of what I felt comfortable with\, so that I could progress into a whole new level of creativity.” Despite that sometimes-daunting process\, Radius wholly reveals Stone’s easy grace in blending everything from edgy soul-pop and earthy folk-rock to throwback R&B and Parliament-inspired funk. \nRadius first began to come to life back in the fall of 2013\, when Stone headed to Sweden to join in a writing session with Tingsek. “His musicality is so outside-the-box\, and it really stretched me as an artist\,” says Stone\, who’d tapped Tingsek as one of his opening acts for an 85-date headlining tour in 2012. “We just kept on throwing a wrench into the works and tried to create something that’s the complete antithesis of what you’d expect from pop music.” After recording the bulk of the album in Sweden\, Stone rounded out Radius’s production at his own studio in the woods of northeast Washington and in L.A.-based sessions with producers like Benny Cassette (who’s previously worked with Kanye West) and Malay (a co-producer on Frank Ocean’s channel ORANGE). \n~Like many of his own musical heroes—Stevie Wonder chief among them—Stone pulls off the near-magical feat of channeling a weight-of-the-world sensitivity into his songs while still radiating hope and promise. And though that depth of consciousness feels transmitted from a more golden era\, Radius continually hones in on issues both timeless and of-the-moment\, with Stone’s breezily poetic lyrics touching on topics ranging from rampant materialism (on the tenderly string-accented\, harmony-soaked “American Privilege”) and the toxic takeover of technology in art (on the gutsy and groove-heavy “Fake Future”). “That song’s mainly about how technology’s infiltrating music in a way that’s making it less and less human and taking all the heart out of it\,” Stone says of the latter track\, a soul-pop powerhouse peppered with playfully cutting lines like “Rock stars pushing buttons/Few actually play/City wasn’t ever built on lights and Special K.” And as evidenced by Radius’s lush yet raw sonic landscape—wherein the only hint of synth comes from a Moog analog synthesizer—Stone stayed true to his pledge to “keep fakeness completely out of this record” and rely entirely on live instrumentation. \nEqually introspective and outwardly searching\, Radius also finds Stone exploring intensely personal matters\, such as depression on the stark and lovely\, acoustic-guitar-woven ballad “Circle” (“That one was written at a pretty dark time for me\,” Stone points out. “It’s about how depression can put you into a kind of circle\, where you’re just trying to find a way out but it keeps on leading you back inside”). Showing his skill at crafting a killer love song as well\, Stone looks at heartbreak and regret on the aching\, electric-piano-infused “I Know That I Wasn’t Right\,” slips into hopeless romanticism on the dreamy R&B pastiche “Barbwire\,” and unleashes some starry-eyed affection on the dancefloor-ready “Symmetrical” (a sample lyric: “The angle of your spine/Is sending lightning bolts down mine/When those molecules combine/It’s astronomically divine”). And in tracks like the ultra-catchy album-opener “Perfect World” and the fiery\, horn-laced “Freedom\,” Radius unfolds into epically joyful anthems that show the full range and power of Stone’s vocals. \nStone started working those vocals as a kid\, thanks largely to his parents’ influence. “My father was a minister so I spent about half my childhood in church\, watching my mom and dad sing together and lead the congregation in song\,” he recalls. By the time he was 11 he’d picked up a guitar and written his first song\, and soon began self-recording demo tapes to pass along to classmates. Although Stone enrolled in bible college after high school\, he quickly dropped out to move to Seattle and kickstart his music career. “I had an ’87 Buick and I’d drive up and down the west coast\, playing any gig I could get just to try to put my music out there\,” he says. \nAt age 22\, Stone self-released his debut album\, 2010’s Last To Speak. But it was his self-titled follow-up (on which he joined forces with former Miles Davis keyboardist Deron Johnson) that ended up earning him serious recognition. Along with entering the top five on iTunes’ R&B/Soul chart after its digital release\, Allen Stone prompted him to score appearances on such late-night talk shows like Conan and grace the pages of publications like the New York Times (whose chief popular-music critic Jon Pareles praised Stone for possessing “a tenor voice with the eagerness and frisky syncopations of [Stevie] Wonder”). And upon partnering with ATO Records for a physical release of his self-titled album in 2012\, Stone soon turned up on the likes of the Late Show with David Letterman and landed a gig as the opening act for soul legend Al Green. In the midst of all the buzz\, he also took up a grueling touring schedule\, tearing through nearly 600 shows in just two years. \nFor Stone\, all that time onstage went a long way in preparing him for the many creative breakthroughs he’s made on Radius. “I think you really grow as a musician when you’re playing right in front of people\, and for me constantly growing and progressing and getting better is really the most important thing\,” he says. Ruminating on the emotional undertones of his new album’s title and noting that “the center of me is my heart\,” Stone says he also hopes that Radius will ultimately help listeners shed new light on their own struggles. “There’ve been times in my life when records were my saving grace and really helped me to figure out who I am\, and I’d love for my music to have that kind of impact on a kid who’s looking for his or her own place in this life\,” he says. “Because I absolutely believe that if you’re going to stand at a microphone and say something\, you need to recognize that as a privilege. You’ve got to be incredibly careful about it\, and really put all your heart into the message that you’re sending out into the world.”
