SUMMARY:INIKO – Awakening The Empire North American Tour
DESCRIPTION:Iniko (they/them) is a genre-defying artist and spiritual storyteller signed to Audio Angel Music Group in partnership with Columbia Records. With a voice that sounds both ancestral and futuristic\, Iniko creates music that transcends time\, blending soul\, trap\, alternative\, and celestial frequencies into a sound uniquely their own. \nTheir gold-certified anthem “Jericho” catapulted them into global consciousness\, laying the foundation for their debut project The Awakening which is a bold and unflinching journey through revolution\, divinity\, and rebirth. The project features songs like “The King’s Affirmation\,” a viral proclamation of self-worth that became a mantra for millions\, and “Yosemite\,” a powerful declaration of Iniko’s role as a protector of the world and a voice for the meek and the damned. \nWith the deluxe edition of The Awakening\, Iniko reveals an even more audacious side\, introducing tracks like “God Body”—a fiery trap-drill anthem where they boast about their god-like nature with a rawness and intensity that first captivated fans during their viral On The Radar performance. \nWhether singing\, rapping\, or channeling emotion through silence\, Iniko’s artistry is deeply spiritual\, deeply human\, and deeply needed. They are the voice of a generation learning to embrace their truth\, their power\, and their higher calling. Iniko isn’t just an artist but they are a portal\, a movement\, and a reminder that we are all divine.

SUMMARY:Fortunate Youth\, Bumpin Uglies
DESCRIPTION:Fortunate Youth is a collaboration of South Bay reggae stand-outs. Rising from various bands\, they’ve created a phenomenal 6-piece masterpiece bringing more fire to the stage than ever before. Combining rootsy vibes and unique bass lines united with multiple harmonies\, boisterous guitar solos\, and heavy keys separates Fortunate Youth from every other mainstream reggae band. With their high energy approach and positive stage presence they provide an unforgettable show to every music fan. Fortunate Youth’s objective is to ensure a performance that leaves you feeling euphoric and curious of what might happen at the next show.\nIn 2011 they supported Tribal Seeds on their nationwide Tribal Youth Tour to spread their conscious music to the nation. F.Y. linked up The Green\, from Hawaii\, for a Midwest/Westcoast run before jumping back in the studio to record. They have hit the masses promoting only their 6-song EP titled “Up-Lifted EP” and just released their full-length album\, “IRIE STATE OF MIND” on July 1\, 2011. Fortunate Youth will also be touring very heavily through 2011 including a Naitonwide CD Release Summer Tour. \nUpon Releasing their full-length album they quickly rose to #2 on the iTunes Reggae Charts and also locked in a #13 position on Billboard Top 100 Reggae Albums. Receiving great praise for early success Fortunate Youth strives to spread their interpretation of Reggae music to Music Lovers worldwide. \nFortunate Youth toured very heavily in 2012 supporting Headliners such as The Expendables and Tribal Seeds. FY also headlined their own Nationwide Summer of Sweet Love Tour proving they can pull their own weight. Making their first international departure\, Fortunate Youth played 4 shows in Costa Rica spreading the love of reggae music internationally. \n2013 release\, “It’s All A Jam”\, hit numerous charts including #1 on Billboard Reggae Charts\, #10 Billboard Pacific Heatseekers Chart\, #23 Billboard National Heatseeker Chart along with #1 on iTunes Reggae Charts and #46 iTunes Overall Charts. FY followed the album release with a 55-Show nationwide Spring Headline Tour seeing great response from the album’s successful release. \nFortunate Youth just finished a Spring 2014 Headline Tour and are gearing up for their Fall with Friends Tour which boasts a solid lineup of support bands including: New Kingston\, The Expanders\, The Steppas\, Ease Up\, Thrive\, Ashes of Babylon\, and more. Keep an eye out for a show in a city near you. All Tour Dates can be seen at www.fortunatemusic.com\n\n\nSocial Links\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBumpin Uglies\n\n \n\nBumpin Uglies spawned from an Annapolis\, MD scene awash in musical history over a decade ago. They are rooted in East Coast ska\, punk\, and reggae\, making their mark up and down the Eastern Seaboard. In the past ten years\, Bumpin Uglies have worked to carve out their path by relentlessly touring\, and releasing one album after another. With each release came more focus\, more creativity and more desire to always experiment and try new things with their music. The band is psyched for their latest EP\, Buzz\, which released on March 22 via Ineffable Music Group based in Oakland\, CA. Ineffable is a name synonymous with the likes of Collie Buddz\, Stick Figure\, The Movement\, and many other prominent artists. \nTheir last album\, Beast From The East\, is proof positive that Brandon\, Wolfie\, Chad and T.J. have meshed into a dynamic quartet as the album topped reggae charts\, drawing interest from Billboard’s editorial team for their debut in the pole position. With fellow Maryland rocker Howi Spangler of Ballyhoo! working on the production\, the alchemy was right for their breakthrough release\, so naturally they are keeping that intact with their current album\, Buzz\, while continuing the trend of evolving their sound\, always experimenting in bold ways that keeps everything fresh from beginning to end. \nTheir climb hasn’t always been easy and as Bumpin Uglies have grinded their way to their current place in the music scene\, they’ve shown that hard work pays off and by putting your heart and soul into it and by taking risks\, you can achieve great things. It’s why they’ve springboarded from The Whiskey in Annapolis (RIP) to slots at major festivals like Firefly\, Peachfest\, and Reggae Rise Up\, and are selling out several markets around the nation. Bumpin Uglies are also proud to have announced their own Headlining Festival\, Weekend at Wolfie’s\, set for June 13-15\, 2019 in Bedford\, PA. \nAs a band they are clearly intent on doing things their own way\, it’s how it’s always been done.  This philosophy has grown Bumpin Uglies into a prolific music-making beast\, has devoted fans tattooing Brandon Hardesty’s poignant lyrics on their bodies and has them growing into a nationally recognized touring headliner. Bumpin Uglies is on fire with no end in site.

SUMMARY:Pepper\, Tunnel Vision
DESCRIPTION:Pepper \nOhana: The Hawaiian word for family\, which is used to convey the sense of togetherness that transcends blood ties. \nFor Pepper paying homage to their roots is essential over a decade in to their celebrated career. The Southern California trio\, who formed in 1997 and moved to the mainland from the three musicians’ hometown of Kailua-Kona\, Hawaii in 1999\, know that where they come from should always be infused in the music they create. On Ohana\, the group’s seventh full-length album (4/29/16\, LAW Records)\, Pepper embraces the feelings and sounds that encouraged them to become a band in the first place. \n“Over our past few albums\, we had been departing from our original sound and exploring new directions\,” Bret notes. “On this album\, we wanted to come back to our classic style and revisit our roots. The writing and recording process was a conscious effort to do that.” \n“We wanted to strip the band down to its natural state\,” Kaleo adds. “We’ve always been a three-piece band with good songs and energy and our goal was to showcase that. We’re all were really pleased with how the music came out and how it conveys the strengths of our band.” \nIt was important to the musicians to self-produce Ohana\, which marks the first time Pepper has helmed the production of one of their albums. From their 2000 debut Give’n It to their 2006 standout album No Shame\, which was recorded with 311’s Nick Hexum\, No Doubt’s Tony Kanal and Butthole Surfers’ Paul Leary\, Pepper has explored various methods of recording\, always hoping to embody not only their signature style of music but their lifestyle in the songs. Ohana was recorded last fall in the band’s own Kona Inn Recording Studio in Redondo Beach. The building is the former home of Pennywise’s Stall #2 studio and embodies a positive vibe for Pepper\, who have recently begun recording other artists in the space. \n“It was time for us to take the reins\,” Bret says. “We’ve been through the process with several really cool producers in the past and we’ve learned a lot from them. We have the knowledge now and it’s about not being complacent anymore. We wanted to do it ourselves\, so it’s from our family to yours.” \n“I really wanted to simplify everything and not overthink things\,” Yesod adds. “We wanted to go jam in a room and hit record. I think we found a great balance in the studio and the end result was pure Pepper\, condensed down to its purest form. It was really gratifying to be in control of the process from start to finish and know that we created every aspect of the album.” \nThe resulting album features Pepper’s surf rock songs\, showcasing the upbeat\, positive vibe elements that make the band so beloved by their fans. There is\, as usual\, an ever-present sense of sunshine throughout the tracks\, bolstering the music’s sense of optimism. The party anthems\, the beach hang melodies\, the boisterous rhythms are all there\, each song carefully crafted to best express sunny moments by the ocean. “Vacation\,” a fun\, upbeat reggae-tinged number\, was co-written by Bret and production duo Diji Parq and seems\, to the band\, like “the Beach Boys at their goofiest.” The soulful “Never Ending Summer” is about taking full advantage of something before it ends while “Wait” evolved throughout the writing process and eventually became a propulsive crooner that feels like signature Pepper. \n“Every song on this album is a great example of what we wanted to do\,” Kaleo says. “That’s why there are only ten of them. We wanted to give the music our concentrated\, focused attention. It’s not about the singles\, but about being a whole piece. That’s why we gave it the most powerful name we know.” \n“Growing up in Hawaii your Ohana defines you\,” Yesod says. “It is you. And it’s not just family through blood – it’s family through spirithood\, brotherhood and sisterhood. Ohana is truly the strongest bond that can ever be made. It’s how we feel about each other as friends and as a band\, and we wanted that spirit to come through in the music itself. These songs come together to create their own version of Ohana.” \nOver the years\, Pepper have toured extensively with groups like 311\, Slightly Stoopid\, Flogging Molly and Sublime With Rome\, and spent several summers on Warped Tour – and this live sensibility shows on the album\, released on the group’s own LAW Records. The band’s music – both live and on their releases – is really about enjoying life and being grateful for each experience. They want to give their all to every performance and share their passion with their fans and with younger artists. \n“We’re still growing a lot\,” Bret says. “Our live show continues to improve and evolve and we always give it our all onstage. We have so much fun playing\, even all these years later. And we’ve gotten to work and tour with so many different artists. We’ve learned a lot from them. Everything we do is done from love. We feel good to all be sitting at a table\, laughing\, twenty years later. It’s the three of us\, just like when we were kids. Because we were together long before we were a band and we’re still such good friends. We can’t stop doing this and we don’t want to ever stop enjoying it.”

SUMMARY:Dorothy w/ Eddie and the Getaway
DESCRIPTION:Light glimmers even in the midst of the darkest night. \nProjecting a full-bodied voice with every inch of her being\, Dorothy Martin kindles this spark of hope into a flame as bright as the sun itself. The Budapest\, Hungary-born maverick singer\, songwriter\, performer\, and frontwoman of the Los Angeles-based eponymous band DOROTHY brings gusto\, grit\, and glory back to hard rock\, exuding superstar-size confidence coupled with the quiet resolve of an old school Western anti-hero. She has unassumingly blazed her own trail with sold out tours\, major collaborations\, and over 1 billion streams already in the rearview. \nHowever\, her vision really catches fire on the group’s fourth full-length album\, The Way [Roc Nation]. \n“This album is a love letter to the fans\,” she says. “I’m letting them know everything is going to be okay\, and we’ll help each other find the way—even if we get lost at times.” \nDOROTHY arrived with the force of a hurricane back in 2016\, serving up the full-length debut ROCKISDEAD. Surging on DSPs\, “Raise Hell” reeled in over 85 million Spotify streams followed by “Wicked Ones” with 77 million Spotify streams. The band organically attracted a diehard global fanbase with 28 Day in the Valley [2018] and Gifts From The Holy Ghost [2022]. KERRANG! hailed the latter as “a hot-blooded rock ‘n’ roll record through and through\,” and RIFF raved\, “Holy Ghost serves as a triumphant battle cry and a return to form.” Perhaps\, Outburn put it best\, “it’s her most bombastic and gloriously\, victorious rock and roll work yet.” Simultaneously\, the singer took flight as the rare dynamo equally at home on a track with Slash and Nita Strauss of Alice Cooper or Staind and Scott Stapp of Creed. She even notably dueted with Stapp at the Grand Ole Opry. \nOver the course of 2024\, she carefully architected what would become The Way alongside songwriter and producer Scott Stevens [Halestorm\, Shinedown\, Daughtry]. Expanding the creative palette\, they leaned into heavier rock spiked with a healthy helping of Southern swagger and country-style storytelling. \n“We kept going in a harder direction\, but we dug into the Southern rock flavor more as well\,” she affirms. “I basically asked\, ‘If I was a heavy metal cowgirl who made music\, what would it sound like?’ I love everything from Nirvana\, Audioslave\, and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Motown\, soul\, gospel\, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.  We definitely revisited our roots\, and it was naturally heavier—which is Scott’s wheelhouse.” \nThey kicked this chapter into high gear by slinging “MUD.” Beyond amassing over 1 million streams right out of the gate\, Loudwire attested\, “The singer is known for her powerful vocals\, but you’ve definitely never heard them like this before.” On its heels\, the seismic “The Devil I Know” only maintained this momentum. \nThe single “Tombstone Town” [feat. Slash] pops off as a countrified rock ‘n’ roll barnburner without comparison. Punctuated by hooting\, hollering\, and the click of a six-shooter\, stomping claps usher a rollicking riff towards a climactic chorus\, “I’ll put you in the ground\, I’ll take you down to Tombstone Town.” Slash pulls up with a fret-burning lead\, closing out this anthem in epic fashion. \n“It’s like a diary entry of a real experience\,” she reveals. “It was my way of sorting out frustrations. Musically\, it’s a rule-breaking song. It’s not necessarily hard rock\, country\, or pop. It’s about a bad relationship and getting revenge. Slash is the most humble\, cool\, and down-to-earth guy. I was honored he said\, ‘Yes’.” \nEchoes of strings murmur beneath her steeple-size delivery on the opener “I Come Alive.” Dorothy’s gospel harmonies practically register on the Richter scale\, giving way to a trudging guitar groove. It culminates on an empowering refrain\, “I adrenalize when it’s do or die\, I come alive.” \n“It’s about when we’re challenged and under pressure\, we can really surprise ourselves and show up\,” she notes. “Hit me twice\, and I’ll keep getting back up. I thrive as soon as it gets tough. It’s my\, ‘I feel like a badass today’ song.” \nThat spirit underscores a similarly unbreakable and undeniable message on “Bones” where she warns\, “I’m never giving in\, it isn’t in my bones.” \n“To me\, it conjures southern gothic imagery\,” she elaborates. “It’s about the past and all of the mistakes and shame being washed away\, getting to come back\, and start new. It’s both vulnerable and heavy.” \nThen\, there’s “Haunted House.” A simmering drum groove anchors the track as her confessional lyrics hit hard\, “I poured whiskey on my demons\, but they ain’t drowning\, I need Jesus.” \n“It definitely deals with your self-destructive side and crying out for help\,” she notes. “If you get stuck in your head and you feel defeated\, your brain tells you scary things.” \nThis ride concludes with the piano-driven title track “The Way.” Acoustic guitar brushes up against her pensive musings\, “In the darkness\, find a light\, till we smile and say goodnight. Reach out my hand to you today\, I might need you just the same. It’s alright to be afraid. We’ll help each other find the way.” \n“I’m a born again Christian\,” she states. “I got saved in Rehab. I started reading the Bible\, and I was studying the story of Saul in the Book of Acts\, “The Road to Damascus\,” when he got struck blind. The words ‘The Way’ jumped off the page. If I can plant little seeds in my songs to foster hope and encourage our fans\, I feel like I’m doing my job. That’s what this whole record is about.” \nIn the end\, that’s why the music will make an impact. \n“I’m just a woman who likes to write songs and wants to make the world a better place\,” she leaves off.  “We put everything we could into this album\, and I’m so proud of it. I’m excited to share it.” \n\n \n\nEddie and the Getaway\nNo matter the genre\, the rules\, or the expectations\, Eddie AndThe Getaway will bend and breakthem all. The 24-year-old Arizona native has grown a rabid audience that connects with hisvulnerable Country lyricism and “in your face” guitars that bring back the nostalgia of early 2000sRock. His live shows bring audiences stadium-size energy no matter where he is playing.Eddie has also written and produced songs for Jay Webb\, Pecos & The Rooftops\, LECADE\, SterlingElza and more-all while building his own artistry on the road and through his viral hits “LoveMyself\,” “Cobain”\, and “From The Outside”.He is a true musical triple threat:a multi-genresongwriter\, producer\, and artist–all of which makes him one of the top artists to watch for 2025.

SUMMARY:Nation of Language\, Greet Death
DESCRIPTION:Nation of Language\, Greet Death\nKnitting Factory – Boise\n416 S. 9th St. – Boise\, ID 83702\nSatOctober 48:00 pm(Doors: 7:00 pm)\nAll Ages\n$27.71Buy Tickets\n\n\nPlease Note: Delayed Delivery is in place for this event. Tickets will be sent 72hrs prior to the show.\n\n+ Google Calendar\n\n\n\n\nArtists\n\n\nNation of Language\n\n \n\n\n\nSocial Links\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreet Death\n\n \n\nTrue to the band’s name\, death creeps into nearly all of Greet Death’s songs. And yet\, through this ever-present certainty\, the band finds the absolute core of what it means to be alive. \nSince 2011\, elementary school friends Logan Gaval and Harper Boyhtari have been writing songs full of big ideas and everyday details. Their music\, loud and full of melodic sensibility\, draws from shoegaze\, doomgaze\, and a little-bit-of-everything-gaze\, creating an emotionally maximalist palette. Writing separately but playing together (think of them as small-town Michigan’s Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus)\, they’ve been drawing in a devoted crowd ever since their unexpectedly successful debut Dixieland in 2017\, followed by their next-level opus New Hell in 2019. You’d be hard-pressed to find albums with such heart: ones flooded both with full-bloom feelings and the dumb stories we tell ourselves in order to get through the day. \nReturning six years later with Die In Love\, their third and best album\, Greet Death faces the great human problem—that we must go on living despite knowing we’re going to die\, and loving despite knowing we’re going to lose it all—with great sensitivity\, humor\, and flourish. With this album\, Greet Death has found a way to anthemize our suffering\, to turn it into one great\, big\, beautiful singalong: we’re all gonna die\, woo! \n“Everybody struggles in a roundabout way\,” goes the album’s opening lyric. No longer just honing in on their own pain\, the band is now using suffering as a jumping-off point\, a way to connect\, and ultimately love one another. “Emptiness is everywhere\, so hold each other close\,” Harper sings later on\, another of the album’s key lyrics. After years of performing their songs live\, the band has seen firsthand how keenly their audience connects to their music. “So I wanted to try to write something less fatalistic\, because I feel some kind of responsibility to help\,” says Logan. \nPrior to recording\, Logan had been listening to a lot of The Beatles and Paul McCartney’s solo work\, “because I was trying to figure out how to write a song that wasn’t just depressing\,” he says. He and Harper had been talking for a while about the direction of Die In Love; why not a bunch of love songs?” They tried to do just that\, but of course\, death came creeping in as usual. Die In Love speaks to the most tragic and beautiful scenario possible: dying beside the person you’ve spent your whole life loving. Tragic\, because we have to die. Beautiful\, because we might be able to do it together. \nThey recorded the album in Harper’s parents’ basement in Davisburg\, Michigan\, the place where she and Logan spent much of their preteen and adolescent years. They cut their teeth in that basement\, learning how to be a band around the time School of Rock came out and inspired in aughts kids a new possible life path. Logan and Harper covered Metallica and Blink-182 and wrote songs about batteries and frozen yogurt. Returning to that basement well over a decade later to record their third album felt like the back-to-basics moment they needed\, something that would take the pressure off after years away from the studio. \nEver since they were kids\, music has been the primary form of communication for Logan and Harper. Between them\, they’re able to mine the absolute essence of everything both through big picture ideas and small vignettes of life. In Logan’s songs we hear the former\, and in Harper’s the latter. While Logan takes big\, beautiful hits at existence\, Harper focuses on small shards. On her songs — ‘Country Girl’\, ‘Emptiness Is Everywhere’ and ‘Love Me When You Leave’ — she takes us through DVD viewings of Halloween\, buckets at KFC and family gatherings soundtracked by ‘Hotel California\,’ “that bullshit Eagles song”. Then\, she’ll deliver a Loganism in quick succession\, one absolutely devastating lyric that blitzes it all to pieces: “family is everywhere ‘til it’s not there.” \nDie In Love asks how we can possibly cope with all the inevitable loss we’ll experience in this life. How on Earth can anyone survive it? The point is that none of us do. So\, enjoy the bullshit Eagles songs while they last; the cheap beer\, the disappointing New Year’s Eve celebrations\, the family members and the lovers who choose to stay a little while. \n“Pain and loss. Everyone feels it\, it’s a very human thing\,” says Logan. “At the end of the day\, we’re lucky to lose people we care about\,” says Logan.

SUMMARY:Circle Jerks\, The Adolescents\, Negative Approach
DESCRIPTION:Circle Jerks\n\n \n\nCircle Jerks emerged from the punk underbelly of LA’s South Bay in 1979. First conceptualized at “The Church” of Hermosa Beach\, the once infamous hangout of scene forefathers Black Flag\, Descendents\, Redd Kross\, and The Last\, the band quickly became the innovators of a movement simply referred to today as HARDCORE PUNK ROCK. \nAfter serving as a co-founder and lead vocalist of Black Flag during the recording of its essential Nervous Breakdown EP\, Keith Morris joined forces with former Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson to form what would become Circle Jerks\, a reference uncovered from artist Raymond Pettibon’s slang dictionary. Having written material for their former bands respectively\, Morris and Hetson\, along with bassist Roger Rogerson and jazz drummer Lucky Lehrer\, fine-tuned previously unfinished material to conceive the troupe’s now-renowned sound – thoughtfully steadfast\, yet relentless and ferocious in nature. Unlike much of the unapologetic hardcore that seeped through the cracks of American suburbia\, the music of the Circle Jerks was dynamic\, deliberate\, and most importantly\, a force to be reckoned with. Bringing together a potent\, articulate rhythm section with earnest yet oftentimes derisive lyrics and themes\, the band was thereafter heralded as a leader of the pack\, but with no real plan in sight. \nThe social climate of Los Angeles in the early eighties was marked by unsettled fluidity\, with the expansion of hardcore punk that infiltrated the public eye. The “pogo” of a former generation became the “slam dance” of another – a moniker consecrated in the iconic Circle Jerks “Skanking Kid” logo designed by graphic designer Shawn Kerri. Songs got shorter\, shows wilder\, and the police – led by embattled police chief Daryl Gates – shut it all down. This earmark of punk lineage was epitomized in the groundbreaking documentary by Penelope Spheeris\, The Decline of Western Civilization\, in which Circle Jerks most notably performed to a pit of chaos. Today\, the film is recognized and preserved by the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant.” \nIn October 1980\, Circle Jerks released their debut studio album Group Sex on Los Angeles label Frontier Records. Clocking in at fourteen songs in just sixteen minutes\, the record remains a milestone of the punk genre and equally as symbolic nearly forty years later. Plowing forward with a relentless\, tooth- cutting work ethic and a rousing stage presence\, the band would soon find itself headlining shows at LA’s 5\,000-capacity Olympic Auditorium and emblazoned in cult video classics like Repo Man\, New Wave Theatre\, and The Slog Movie. Over the decades\, Circle Jerks would release six studio albums\, including the   acclaimed Wild   in   the   Streets (1982)\, Golden   Shower   of    Hits (1983)\, Wonderful (1985)\, and IV (1987)\, where they would become a major headliner during the alternative music explosion of Generation X. Morris and Hetson remain the only consistent members since the band’s creation\, withstanding several lineup changes\, including Flea and Chuck Biscuits. Bassist Zander Schloss (The Weirdos\, Joe Strummer) has been a member since the 1980’s. During hiatuses\, Morris fronted bands like OFF! and FLAG\, while Hetson played guitar in Bad Religion. \nThe long list of those influenced by the legacy of the Circle Jerks ranges from Butthole Surfers to Red Hot Chili Peppers – with notable fans being Dogtown skateboarders\, Chuck Berry\, Alice Cooper\, Elton John\, Johnny Depp\, Guns N’ Roses\, and Philip K. Dick. Decades later\, their music continues to make an imprint on generations of diverse music fans and those who challenge the status quo. \nIn celebration of the band’s 40th anniversary and the commemorative reissue of their celebrated landmark record Group Sex\, Circle Jerks return to the stage for the first time in over a decade.

SUMMARY:Pup w/ Chase Petra
DESCRIPTION:It seems significant that there were bats in the mansion’s attic\, although how significant it seems will have something to do with how you feel and what you know about PUP. None of it is a metaphor\, and also all of it is. \nThe mansion\, for its part\, is very real—it is a sprawling residence-slash-studio in Connecticut’s most dispiriting mid-sized city where the producer Peter Katis has helped acts like The National and Interpol and Frightened Rabbit and Kurt Vile make records. There are gold records on the walls and warrens of strange new rooms that the band members discovered seemingly daily; the roof leaks when it rains\, and the bats reclaim the attic after dark. PUP singer Stefan Babcock recorded all his vocals in the living room\, at night. “The other guys were just trying to live their lives\,” he said\, “and Nestor and I would be down there screaming into microphones while they were watching TV in the next room.” Babcock remembered Katis telling him that the bats “go away” during the daytime hours. “I was like\, ‘no\, they’re sleeping\,’” Babcock said. “They don’t go anywhere\, there’s nowhere for them to go.’” \nThe band spent five weeks there in the summer of 2021\, recording and mixing the typically furious and anthemic songs that would become their fourth album\, THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND. The band—Babcock\, bassist Nestor Chumak\, drummer Zack Mykula\, and guitarist Steve Sladkowski—more or less never left. “There were some days that were really great\, like magical\, everything worked and then we’d go to the kitchen and make a great meal\,” Sladkowski said\, “and then there were days when you’re like ‘I can’t remember the last time I’ve been outside.’” Circumstances—a global pandemic\, still happening\, not much fun to talk about and won’t be addressed further here—made cultivating a healthy\, communal vibe more difficult\, but the band powered through by having friends like Sarah from Illuminati Hotties\, Kathryn from NOBRO\, Mel from Casper Skulls\, and Erik from Remo Drive pitch in. When the band got comfortable in its strange new home\, the (figurative) walls came down. “As the weeks passed\, we seemed less and less rational\, objective\, and sane\,” Babcock says. “You can hear the band start to fall off the cliff\, and because of that\, I think this record is our truest and most genuine to date. There is nothing more PUP than a slow and inevitable descent into self-destruction.” \nEvery PUP record arrives with an implied “contents under pressure” warning; the tension between the band’s instinct for the melodic and its gift for chaos propels the songs forward while making them also seem close to flying apart in a horrifying spray of tears and gore. To listen to PUP enough is to spend parts of every day mentally echoing some hilariously self-lacerating\, utterly undeniable choruses; you will find yourself thinking “this is the mosh part” at moments when you would otherwise be tearing yourself apart. It is one thing to feel\, as Babcock sings on THE UNRAVELING’s “Totally Fine\,” “like I’m slowly dying/and if I’m being real I don’t even mind\,” but it is another\, very different thing to find yourself shouting along with those words. There’s a tension here\, too. “There’s only so many times you can write a song about how much you hate yourself before you write a song about how fucking good you are at hating yourself\,” Babcock says. “It’s funny that we’ve provided for ourselves by being fuck-ups and writing songs about being fuck-ups. We’ve been fuck-ups forever\, and now we’ve got a responsibility\, to others and to ourselves\, to fuck up in a productive manner.” \nThat’s not any easier than it sounds\, but also the volatility is the thing; all that tension is always just barely held in place by the band’s craft. It couldn’t be anything but uneasy\, but THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND is the sound of a band that is not just comfortable with but in command of that chaos. \nWe are back in the mansion\, now\, albeit the metaphorical one. PUP is objectively a very successful band. They won a Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year for 2019’s Morbid Stuff and have been nominated for the Polaris Prize and many nice things have been said about them in the places that people say nice things about bands; because they are PUP\, “nice things” in this case means Pitchfork saying that they “turn self-loathing and self-deprecation into a sort of superpower.” Fans happily sing the coruscating words of their songs aloud in sold-out venues all around the world; they did a version of arguably the harshest song on 2019’s Morbid Stuff for a 2020 CBC Kids Christmas special in which they replaced the lyric “embrace the calamity” with “embrace the festivities”; they have performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers\, and played at major festivals like Lollapalooza\, Boston Calling\, Shaky Knees\, and Riot Fest. A mansion is a place where such a band might go to record an ambitious fourth album. That success doesn’t haunt THE UNRAVELING\, although it does make it funnier; the “Four Chords” piano ballad threaded through the album tells the tale of a contentious quarterly meeting of PUP’s “board of directors” going selfishly awry. There is a long history of Mansion Albums; sometimes it works out well and sometimes it works out less well and more often than would seem plausible a Jaguar convertible winds up at the bottom of a swimming pool. \nPUP is not really that kind of band\, though\, and THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND is not that kind of record. It is still very much a PUP album\, but relocating from the literal basement where they wrote Morbid Stuff to the janky manse in which they put together its follow-up afforded the band space to grow\, and to make not just the next PUP record but the most PUP record. “This is a band that\, until this record\, out of some weird fucked up sense of misguided pride or idiocy\, felt that we should never use any instruments aside from drums\, bass\, and guitars\,” Babcock says. “We quickly came to realize that the instrumentation isn’t what makes PUP songs PUP. It’s the songs themselves\, finding this balance between heavy and melodic\, dark and fun\, pushing the limits of our writing chops and musicianship in a way that makes us laugh and also want to smash shit. So this record starts with the stupidest piano ballad of all time. And there are synths. And there are horns. And there are some 808s and trap hi-hats. And some other weird shit that we haven’t done before.” \nThere is no faking that\, which of course makes it all much harder to do. In the best PUP songs\, the whole process is not just visible but thrilling—the anguish and doubt that drives the songs is nurtured\, over a few loud minutes\, into something first legible and then somehow empowering. There are a lot of these songs on THE UNRAVELING. The alternately plaintive and anthemic “Matilda” is a classic galloping PUP shout-along recrimination-fest that sounds bigger than previous entries in this robust subgenre without losing any of the signature acid. “Waiting” is pure paint-stripping heat\, topped by some legitimately towering choruses. “Robot Writes A Love Song” dissolves into a wash of nervous synthesizer before becoming what is surely the most emotional song ever written from the perspective of a computer being overwhelmed unto death by actual human emotions. “I wanted to write about the horrible state of the world\, but through a very specific and personal lens\,” Babcock says. “It’s a lot of me trying to articulate my own coping with existential dread\, hopelessness\, and what I’ve called ‘Grim Reaping’—which is to me\, the idea that we are all reaping what we sow\, and right now we’re sowing some pretty fucked up shit.” \nTHE UNRAVELING is not a departure from what got PUP here\, really; for all the new breadth\, this is still very much the fourth album by the band that has spun songs about The Bad Decisions Lifestyle into scrappy art. The hooks are as bright and barbed as always; the poison threaded through every song is no less potent. But a fourth album should be different from the first\, or even the third\, and THE UNRAVELING is. “I don’t know that we set out to do new stuff\,” Mykula says\, of a record on which the band does a great deal of new stuff. “It’s just a band trying to sound as much like themselves as possible. Every record you make\, you get closer to that.” \nTHE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND is that next step—not towards perfection\, or even towards some more perfect version of writing songs about fucking up\, but just in the direction of its choice. It’s a product of this endless awful broader moment\, but also very much a step forward into that uncertainty. “The whole album process really brought us closer together\, even as things unraveled\,” Babcock says. “It’s hands down my favorite PUP record\, and I don’t think it could’ve been made under any other circumstances.” It’s the sound of a band learning how to share the mansion with the bats. \n\n \n\nChase Petra\nChase Petra’s music has always been about growth: growing up\, growing out\, growing tired of what others expect of you. On their sophomore album\, LULLABIES FOR DOGS\, the Long Beach\, CA trio once again elevates the existential questions that pepper life’s long\, unpredictable journey. \nAnd it’s their sense of figuring things out in real time that makes Chase Petra so relatable\, as the band’s “quarter-life-crisis pop” elevates deep introspection to navigate the messiness and confusion that comes with modern life. Their songs are guided by the age-old push-and-pull between what it means to grow up and be grown up\, to see your once-bright dreams dulled by the responsibilities of adulthood and grapple with the fallout.
