SUMMARY:Emo Nite
DESCRIPTION:Not a band. Not DJ’s. We throw parties for the music we love. \nAs Rolling Stone observed a few years ago\, “Emo Nite Vindicated the Scene.” \nSince they threw their first party at an East L.A. dive bar\, Morgan Freed and T.J. Petracca\, and a dedicated crew of regular attendees\, built Emo Nite into a phenomenon. Top-tier emo artists\, old and new\, curate playlists and perform\, with guest lists boasting members of blink-182\, All Time Low\, Dashboard Confessional\, The Maine\, and Good Charlotte. Scene-friendly pop culture mavericks often participate\, like past attendees Post Malone\, Demi Lovato\, Machine Gun Kelly\, and Skrillex. \nIt’s all too easy to forget that before the first Emo Nite in December 2014\, “emo” was a joke. \nSomehow on its journey from a melodic post-hardcore subgenre\, built on earnest emotional expression\, to a mainstream moniker assigned to anything remotely angsty\, “emo” became a dirty word. Despite the positive impact ushered in by waves of bands\, from the crucial “Revolution Summer” and Sunny Day Real Estate through Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance\, accepting “emo” as a dismissive designation or identity invited polite embarrassment and even scorn. \nBut Freed and Petracca grew up loving the music associated with emo and the people like them who similarly embraced outsider art and subculture\, regardless of changing fashions or pretentious snobbery. Petracca told The New Yorker the idea behind the first Emo Nite celebration was to center a happy\, communal experience on the music they once listened to when they were upset and alone. \n“I sang Dashboard Confessional at karaoke at a friend’s birthday party and thought it was super fun to go out with friends and listen to music we actually liked\,” recalls Petracca\, who met Freed when the pair worked at a creative agency together. “Every other club in LA played EDM\, Top 40\, or hip-hop. We always found ourselves pre-gaming with emo and pop-punk music before we went out.” \nFreed knew a bartender at the Short Stop in Echo Park and convinced him to let them throw a party on a random\, rainy Tuesday. They invited friends via Facebook; double the bar’s capacity turned up. “We decided to see how far we could take it\,” Petracca says. “‘Who would be the craziest guest?’ We invited Mark Hoppus\, and he came! He did our first one at Echoplex\, which was our third party ever.” \n“There’s no disconnect between the artist and fan\,” Freed points out. “I think that’s brought people closer to the music. It created a really strong sense of community\, at a time when emo wasn’t ‘cool.’” \nThere may be a surprise acoustic set or even a full-band performance\, but ultimately\, it’s about the experience. Emo Nite turned a party into a community\, reclaiming the spirit of how the scene began. \nIt’s now a recurring event thrown by dozens of friends in over 30 cities in the United States. Emo Nite runs full-day festivals and curates coveted performance spots at Coachella\, Life is Beautiful\, and Firefly. Freed and Petracca launched successful clothing collaborations with brands like OBEY\, Urban Outfitters\, PLEASURES\, The Hundreds\, Rose in Good Faith\, Market\, and OWSLA. \n“A larger promoter told us the shelf life of a club night in Los Angeles was two years\,” Freed says\, marveling at Emo Nite’s staying power. “A hundred percent of it is the people that go to it. This music makes people feel connected. The energy of it is so special. You get a group of people together who look different\, but they have this thing in common. We started seeing friend groups form really\, really quickly. People met their significant others at these events. The community really trusts each other.” \n“Emo Nite LA has become an essential gathering point for fans of emo\, pop-punk\, and related styles\,” Rolling Stone noted. \nIn October 2021\, Emo Nite’s founders threw Emo Nite Vegas Vacation\, a three-day event headlined by Avril Lavigne and Machine Gun Kelly\, with Sleeping With Sirens\, MOD SUN\, 3OH!3\, and more. \n“What Emo Nite does better than any of their competitors is they make ‘emo culture’ feel both nostalgic and brand new\,” The Summer Set’s Brian Logan Dales told Forbes\, in a profile which included professions of love from members of Papa Roach\, Underoath\, and State Champs. “You can go to an Emo Nite with your best friends and sing along to old songs you grew up with\, and at the same time\, discover a brand-new artist who’s making music today because they grew up on that very same music as you. They’ve taken the emo of the past and helped it forge a new path for the future.” \nAs emo reenters popular culture with a blend of adoring nostalgia and optimistic forward- thinking\, Emo Nite remains an authentic space to celebrate diversity\, experience passionate catharsis\, and champion authentic expression. Emo Nite isn’t a band or a DJ crew. It’s an idea\, one as simple as the urge to throw a party for a beloved style of music. Often imitated but never truly duplicated\, Emo Nite’s founders and supporters are fond of saying\, “If you don’t see the grave\, it ain’t our rave.” \n“There’s a lot of ownership from our community of the event itself and the Emo Nite brand\,” Petracca says. “It’s about breaking down that barrier of ‘Look at me\, it’s all about me.’ No\, it’s about us\, together\, in this room. It belongs to every single person that comes through the door.”\nThe co-founders continue to look ahead. “Emo Nite definitely impacted culture\,” Freed notes. “But we have no plans to stop changing the way we view the evolution and expansion of the genre.”

SUMMARY:Sub-Radio\, DOUBLECAMP
DESCRIPTION:Few independent bands have had a career as varied and unpredictable as the indie pop sextet Sub-Radio. Founded in Washington DC by a group of childhood friends\, the band released a series of EPs between 2018 and 2020\, blending the pop-punk they grew up on with the indie-pop stylings of WALK THE MOON and The 1975. Forced online by the COVID-19 pandemic\, they found enormous viral success on Reddit and TikTok in 2021\, streaming their high-energy live performances to more than 20 million viewers and driving a huge new audience to their single “Flashback”. The band signed with indie label Th3rd Brain in early 2022 and released their latest EP\, Past Selves in February of 2023. In support of a new release\, Sub-Radio announced The Sunrise City Tour which kicks off in September of 2024.

SUMMARY:Explosions in the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Explosions in the Sky – End\nSeptember 8\, 2023\n“It never fails to amaze me the power of music when love is at its core. It is the reason we get out of bed\nevery morning. To hope that we can continue to show that beauty is still around and in all of us. Thank\nyou for doing what you do and helping us through this life.”\n– Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins)\, in a message sent to Explosions in the Sky after hearing End\, the\nband’s first album in seven years\nEnd\, the enigmatic seventh album by Explosions in the Sky\, was inspired by darkness\, but became a\nloud\, dramatic\, wild rumination on life and death.\n“Our starting point was the concept of an ending—death\, or the end of a friendship or\nrelationship. Every song comes from a story\, or an idea one of us has had that we’ve all\nexpanded on and made its own world. Maybe it’s our nature\, but we kept feeling that the album\ntitle was ultimately open to a lot more interpretation—the end of a thing or a time can mean a\nstop\, but it can also mean a beginning\, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in\ncomparison to what it becomes next\,” says the band about the album.\nEnd is perhaps the “grandest” Explosions in the Sky album – melding the quiet restraint and\ncrushing feel of their early releases with the sonic texturing and ornate experimentation of their later\nreleases\, and their increasingly deep film and television scoring catalog\, influenced by personal\ntastes stretching from classical to soul to experimental ambient music.\nThe title “End” furthers a story arc reflected in the album titles that started with the “innocence”\nof their first album (How Strange\, Innocence)\, progressed through the idealism and\nromanticism of their second and third albums (Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die\, Those Who\nTell the Truth Shall Live Forever and The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place)\, followed by the\nintrospection (All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone and Take Care Take Care Take Care) and\nbig-picture focus (The Wilderness) of their most recent albums.\nThe band announced “The End Tour” this spring\, bringing their legendary live show experience to 26\ncities around the world in 2023. More dates are expected to be announced soon.\nThey are currently scoring a new\, undisclosed\, television series that will premiere in 2024.\nEnd is the band’s seventh\, but not final\, studio album.\nExplosions in the Sky – End\nSeptember 8\, 2023\nAbout Explosions in the Sky\nExplosions in the Sky are an iconic instrumental rock band from Texas that have become the gold\nstandard for bold\, emotional\, cinematic music and are known for their incendiary live concerts.\nThey’ve slowly grown from playing DIY spaces and opening for Fugazi to having headlined Radio\nCity Music Hall\, Royal Albert Hall\, the Greek Theatre\, and the Sydney Opera House.\nOver 24 years of being a band (with the same four members the entire time)\, they’ve achieved\nremarkable commercial success from an especially non-commercial corner of the music world\,\nselling more than 1.3 million copies over six studio albums\, and scoring five major motion pictures in\nthe process. They’ve become the sound of modern sports films\, documentaries and television\, due\nlargely to their genre-defining Friday Night Lights score\, and they’ve been asked to tour with artist\nfans as diverse as Nine Inch Nails\, Smashing Pumpkins\, The Flaming Lips\, and Death Cab for\nCutie\, while managing to not sound like any other popular artist.\nEnd Credits\nWritten and performed by Christopher Hrasky\, Michael James\, Mark T. Smith\, and Munaf Rayani\nProduced by John Congleton and Explosions In The Sky\nRecorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo\, Texas\nEngineered and mixed by John Congleton\nAssistant engineers: Gerardo “Jerry” Ordonez and Diego Mendoza\nMastered by Bernie Grundman\nArtwork by Pat Perry\nDesign by Ben Dickey\nExplosions in the Sky – Studio Albums\n– How Strange\, Innocence (2000)\n– Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die\, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever (2001)\n– The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place (2003)\n– All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone (2007)\n– Take Care Take Care Take Care (2011)\n– The Wilderness (2016)\nExplosions in the Sky – Film Scores\n– Friday Night Lights (2004)\n– Lone Survivor (2013)\n– Prince Avalanche (2013)\n– Manglehorn (2014)\n– Big Bend (2022) \n\n\n\n \n\nExit Angles\nExit Angles is a philosophy of breaking free. The path to inner and outer freedom. To be wide\nopen and unafraid to accept the realness that lurks behind the surface of pretension. To be your\nmost unapologetic self\, and to see the real in others and encourage it with every fiber of a\ncompassionate heart. To scream for life\, unfiltered and limitless. To reach for possibilities\nbeyond our materialistic society.\nThere may be a way out\, a way to exit the capitalist model and enter fully into community\, DIY.\nAn exchange with no sense of possession or lack. Just being. Becoming what you’ve always\nbeen and shedding the roles and identities we’ve put on to cope. Art and music with no\ncommercial intentions is needed more than ever.\nRemember how music makes you feel when you’re alone? Remember when you got\ngoosebumps at shows? Remember feeling like you didn’t know where this performance might\ngo? This is the atmosphere at Exit Angles shows. Pure music: Rock and Roll. Drums\, bass\, and\nguitars through loud amps projecting vibrations through the air. No tricks\, no gadgets; pure\nsound with pure intent. Behind it\, songs that pierce the heart\, singing of a common pain\, and a\ncommon yearning. Speaking out against the traps that ensnare us\, conform us\, that tell us to\ngive up trying to transform the hideous world we’ve created. Asking questions: are we\nconsumers\, or are we builders? Are we just trying to obtain our own comfortable life in this\nworld? Do our actions match our words?\nWe need to encourage each other to pick up the fight\, to detach from the tethers that keep us\nspinning in our own ego orbit. To open up. To see unity\, and not division.\nIf you find yourself at an Exit Angles show\, you will witness four individuals playing pure soul\nmusic with total joy and total commitment. Not the genre “soul\,” but the substance of who we\nare. You will see channelers\, thrown about the stage\, bouncing here and there\, in ecstatic\nmeditation. Witness the faces; the story is\, we need this.\nexitangles.com

SUMMARY:TURNOVER w/ Glare\, Glixen
DESCRIPTION:The title track of the band’s new album\, Myself in the Way\, speaks to this mindset. “I can’t put myself in the way of love again\,” sings Getz\, “I promise I’m going to go all the way with you\,” is specifically about Getz getting engaged to his longtime partner\, but applies to the general outlook he had toward life in lockdown. “I was living in Sebastopol\, California at the time and felt like I truly lived there for the first time since I wasn’t leaving for tour. I was able to go meditate at the Zen Buddhist dojo down the road\, run and bike around the hills in Sonoma county\, learn about plants and gardening\, take some Spanish and arboriculture classes\, and get involved with the volunteer fire department. Just do a bunch of new things to challenge and inspire me in a natural way.” \nTurnover’s other members also used the time to deepen interests they hadn’t been able to fully explore before covid. Bass player Dan Dempsey was in New York City and responded to lockdown by spending more time practicing his visual art in drawing and painting. He painted the album’s cover during this period and developed a style that has become a central theme for the band in its current iteration. Drummer Casey Getz found work at a Virginia Beach state park as touring continued to be postponed. He was in search of and inspired by having a work-life balance different than he’d experienced since he was younger. Through this\, he was able to nurture current relationships more and find new ones\, something touring made much more difficult. This led to Casey playing drums with a group of longtime friends in Virginia Beach and further developing his drumming style – adding a new prowess for fluidity and improvisation through lengthy jam sessions with the group. Guitarist Nick Rayfield was focused on sharpening his guitar and piano playing and was able to devote energy to skateboarding and his retail business more than he had been able to for the last few years. This was also the band’s first album with Rayfield making songwriting contributions after touring with them for years as a live member\, adding a new creative element to the songs. \nOver 18 months Turnover weaved these individual experiences into a collective work\, recording the LP over two sessions with longtime collaborator Will Yip at Studio 4. Austin is credited\, for the first time\, as co-producer. \n“I had specific ideas for sound design on this album. I knew a lot of sounds I wanted to hear and use. We wanted everything to be able to be heard and have its own place. I was inspired by the way Magical Mystery Tour and Dark Side of the Moon sounded. We decided to go a lot wider with it and utilize panning and stereo more than we had in the past\, while also wanting it to sound tighter and smaller than some of our earlier records. We were inspired by drum and bass sounds from Chic and Quincy Jones records from the 70s\, so we put the drums in the control room to get them to sound smaller. We used an active pickup bass and a jazz bass to get that percussive sound from the bass so the low end wasn’t as rumbling and subby. We let the synths share some of that low end that the drums and bass gave up. Quincy’s approach to arrangements were a huge inspiration in this record as well. The horn and string lines I wanted to sound like classic era disco\, mixed with modern synth and vocal sounds. I had been experimenting with my own vocal styles a lot and utilized autotune and vocoder on this album almost as instruments on certain songs as a stylistic choice.” \nThe band has always been DIY\, but post pandemic they have taken that to a different level. They appreciate more than ever how lucky they are to get to be together and have fun creating things with their friends. They have found that they are usually best suited for executing their own vision\, not only musically\, but with all its accompaniments as well. For this album they made all their own videos in collaboration with friends and using Dempsey’s drawings and paintings. \nChange is authentic and true to Turnover as a band and as individuals. Chart a course through their discography and find a band continually reinventing themselves with a unique artistic ambition. Myself In The Way arrives finding Turnover doing the same within their own persons\, pushing the band into new and exciting parallel depths of expression. \n\n\n\n \n\nGlare\nTexas Shoegaze \n\n\n \n\nGlixen\nEluding all expectations of the current alternative rock space\, Glixen come from Phoenix\, Arizona and have taken their sound coast to coast on tour in North America. As influences\, lead vocalist/guitarist Aislinn Ritchie cites My Bloody Valentine\, No Doubt\, and T.A.T.U. In the same breath\, also citing heavier acts such as HUM and My Vitriol. Ritchie founded Glixen in 2020 and later added the talents of lead guitarist Esteban Santana\, drummer Keire Johnson\, and bassist Sonia Garcia. \nGlixen released their debut EP She Only Said via Julias War Records on August 11th\, 2023. The lead single Splendor sets the tone of the EP by masterfully capturing the swirling ambiance of 90s rock\, ethereal pop vocals\, and fuzzed out walls of guitar all wrapped up in a lacey white ribbon. She Only Said is a cathartic anthem that feels like glitter and thorns down the listeners spine.

SUMMARY:Foxing\, From Indian Lakes\, Mylo Bybee
DESCRIPTION:The Foxing show scheduled for October 1 at The Olympic has been moved to The Reef. \nThe show will now start at 9:30 PM. Doors open at 9:00 PM. \nAll tickets will be honored. If you are unable to attend due to the venue change\, please reach out to TicketWeb for a refund by August 22nd. \nThe band released their debut full-length record\, “The Man With Wooden Legs” in the Winter of 2009. The songs that were spawned out of this release reflect the bands’ collective maturity and purpose while being surrounded by music that is otherwise derivative and lacking in any sort of defining positive characteristics. Since their initial debut\, the band has been working endlessly\, playing countless shows throughout the US as well as dedicating time in the studio in preparation for their upcoming full-length. The next release\, entitled Able Bodies\, is already garnering wide acclaim with both longtime fans as well as those who have just recently discovered the band. \nAble Bodies moves several steps forward in their maturity and depth\, while still retaining the aggression\, passion and darkness of their debut. Joey Vannuchi’s (vocals\, guitar) lyrics and musical abilities are well beyond his years and his artistic sensibilities showcase his unique approach to songwriting\, undeniable talent\, and the bands inevitable longevity.

SUMMARY:TONALITY - You Are Not Alone
DESCRIPTION:Tonality sings of the labels placed on those with mental illness. These fellow community members\, treated “different” reflect on our shame and feelings of misunderstanding. \nThis concert speaks through the eyes of poets and artists who have dealt or deal with mental illness issues. Additionally\, the concert explores how we can be of support to members of our community who need compassion\, understanding\, and validation. We can heal and grow together\, through our united story and bond through singing.

DESCRIPTION:“I got tired of sadness/ I got tired of all the madness/ I got tired of bein’ a badass all the time\,” Matthew Houck sings on\n“Revelator\,” the opener and title track of his latest Phosphorescent album. Houck was actively looking for something new\, an\nepiphany\, when the old ways stopped working. And just as the album Revelator only revealed itself to its author along the\nway\, so too did real life revelations take their time answering the plaintive mission statement with which Houck reintroduces\nPhosphorescent.\nThe last time we heard from Phosphorescent\, it was after a five year gap between Houck’s 2013 breakthrough Muchacho\nand 2018’s C’est La Vie. His life had changed drastically: He had left New York City for Nashville\, had children\, survived a\nnearly fatal bout of meningitis\, and re-built his recording studio from the ground up. Now\, another half decade has passed\, a\nperiod that while quieter\, has proven no less complex\, with Houck traversing murkier spaces and the blurry mists of time.\n“This record is a lot more open-ended and ephemeral\,” Houck explains\, noting the more plainly autobiographical\ndocumentation of C’est La Vie has been upended by something less knowable\, more unsettled. The underlying melancholy\nof Phosphorescent’s music remains\, reframed by the weird headspace of long-term fallouts from the last few years.\nRevelator might promise a fresh outlook\, another horizon\, but first the album wrestles with an ongoing\, ambient sense of\ndread.\nAfter a bit of pandemic dormancy\, Houck first revived Phosphorescent for The Full Moon Project in 2022. Each month\, on\nthe full moon\, he released a cover of a song from an eclectic selection of artists like Randy Newman\, Nick Lowe\, Nina\nSimone and Tom T. Hall\, getting back in the groove of making music in his Nashville studio. The Full Moon recordings did\nthe trick\, shaking the cobwebs loose: After the downtime of the pandemic\, Revelator suddenly happened fast. Houck\nunderwent a few writing retreats\, renting himself a room across town then rejoining his family for the weekend. Though it\nonly took six months to write and record\, it wasn’t an easy birth: Revelator made Houck confront his usual tendencies toward\nself-doubt\, amplified by his own questions about what sort of album he was making.\nIn the end\, Revelator points the way to a poignant outcome. It’s an album of elegant gravity and “the grand sadness in life”\n— perennial Phosphorescent subject matter\, by Houck’s estimation. In some ways\, Revelator extends seamlessly from the\nstory begun by Muchacho and continued by C’est La Vie. It finds Houck further mastering his unique blend of ragged\,\nexperiment-y classicism intertwined with ethereal\, lachrymose atmospherics. Across Revelator\, Houck sings from a woozy\,\nworn headspace\, but leads us to a place where dreams and reality mingle. Anxieties about the future — both personal and\nglobal — air alongside stray memories. Surprisingly profound (yet still raunchy) messages scrawled on a men’s room wall sit\nnext to moments of reclaimed wonder\, with Houck seeing the world anew through his children’s eyes.\nWhile Revelator remained a mystery even to Houck for some time\, you can see a clear arc unfold across its nine songs.\n“Revelator” works as an overture\, setting the stakes for Phosphorescent’s next chapter\, and forecasting some of the\nconclusions reached after the winding journey of the subsequent eight songs. For the first time\, Houck sings someone else’s\nsong on a Phosphorescent album\, after his partner Jo Schornikow wrote “The World Is Ending\,” a wryly bleak song that\ncommunicated a lot of the same things Houck had been feeling. After the newfound warmth of settling down on C’est La Vie\,\n“Fences” and “Impossible House” use domestic imagery not as idylls\, but as mechanisms of distance\, grappling with the\nchallenges of maintaining long-term partnerships. Though C’est La Vie was never quite as happy as some suggested\,\nRevelator is notably more conflicted\, wracked. The song “Wide As Heaven” originated in a dream in which Houck found\nhimself in a crumbling warehouse surrounded by people from different chapters of his life\, the song playing over the\nspeakers. “Why does heaven make me feel so sad?” Houck asks\, his voice nearly breaking. It’s one of the more dangerous\nquestions we can ask ourselves: What happens when you have a seemingly perfect life\, and the darkness still lingers?\nBy the time Revelator closes with “To Get It Right\,” Houck hasn’t necessarily found an answer\, but at least has resolved to\nkeep searching for one. Sprawling out over seven minutes\, “To Get It Right” is the latest Phosphorescent epic that leaves\nyou just a bit transformed by its conclusion. After all these songs that show us how we can disappear from ourselves — how\nwe drift from the people we love\, how we lose sight of things we once knew — “To Get It Right” is a reclamation\, the moment\nwhere you find your way back to some core truths while still carrying what you learned along the way.\n“I like that the record restrains itself the entire time until the last song lays it all out there\,” Houck says. “I needed it to have\nsome strength\, to not quit. I needed it to say: ’Yeah\, we got this.’”
