SUMMARY:Drive-By Truckers\, Deer Tick w/ Thelma and the Sleaze
DESCRIPTION:Since their inception in 1996\, Drive-By Truckers have carved out a unique niche in the music scene with their raw\, unflinching storytelling\, heavy-hitting guitar riffs\, and blend of Alternative and Southern rock. Founded by Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley\, Drive-By Truckers have released 14 studio albums and played more than 2\,500 shows in the last three decades. Notable members include long-time drummer Brad Morgan and current members Jay Gonzalez and Matt Patton\, who have helped define the band’s evolving sound. The band’s work has often reflected the state of American society\, particularly through their celebrated trilogy of albums: American Band (ATO\, 2016)\, The Unraveling (ATO\, 2020)\, and The New OK (ATO\, 2020). This series marked a bold foray into politically charged and topical songwriting\, earning acclaim for its insightful commentary and fearless expression. \nIn 2022\, they released Welcome 2 Club XIII (ATO)\, an introspective look back at their early days\, juxtaposed with the realities of adult life and parenting. This album highlights the band’s continued ability to blend personal reflection with broader societal observations. In July 2024\, the band released the deluxe edition of their influential third studio album\, Southern Rock Opera. Alongside the reissue\, the band has been touring across North America on their “Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour”\, featuring a full performance of the album that solidified their legacy in the annals of rock history. As they continue to push boundaries and explore new musical territories\, Drive-By Truckers remain a vital and dynamic force in the rock genre\, celebrated for their powerful narratives and unwavering dedication to their craft. \n\n \n\nDeer Tick\nEmotional Contracts\, the latest full-length album from Deer Tick\, catalogs all the existential casualties that accompany the passing of time\, instilling each song with the irresistibly reckless spirit that’s defined the band for nearly two decades. Before heading into the studio with producer Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips\, Spoon\, Sleater-Kinney)\, the Providence-bred four-piece spent months working on demos in a perpetually flooded warehouse space in their hometown\, enduring the busted heating system and massive holes in the roof as they carved out the album’s 10 raggedly eloquent tracks. Emotional Contracts fully echoes the unruly energy of its creation\, ultimately making for a heavy-hearted yet wildly life-affirming portrait of growing older without losing heart. \nDeer Tick’s first new body of work since 2017’s simultaneously released Deer Tick Vol. 1 and Deer Tick Vol. 2\, Emotional Contracts is their most collaborative to date\, and sees all four members operating at their peak songcraft powers. The album came to life over an unusually lengthy period of time for the band\, with each track based in playing around together and connected in the almost telepathic way that’s only possible after nearly 20 years. Well-rehearsed and overly prepared\, Deer Tick embraced a decidedly more free-and-easy approach to the recording process at Fridmann’s Tarbox Road Studios in Western New York. “We’ve had a habit of trying to maintain a strict control over everything in the studio\, but this time we wanted to see what it would feel like to let go a bit\,” says singer/guitarist John McCauley\, whose bandmates include guitarist Ian O’Neil\, drummer Dennis Ryan\, and bassist Christopher Ryan. “We figured that the songs were strong enough to stand on their own two feet\, so whatever we put them through would just make them stronger and take us in some new directions.” Dennis adds\, “The fact that we’d spent so much time with these songs allowed us to be really free once we got into the studio. No one was overthinking anything\, and because of that the album sounds like us in a way that we’d never captured to this extent before.” Featuring guest musicians like Steve Berlin of Los Lobos–and background vocals from singer/songwriters like Courtney Marie Andrews\, Vanessa Carlton (who is also McCauley’s wife)\, Kam Franklin\, Angela Miller\, and Sheree Smith–Deer Tick’s ATO Records debut adds an even greater vitality to their feverish collection of timeless rock-and-roll. \nMostly recorded live–and honed down from nearly 20 songs to a concise\, thoughtfully curated ten–Emotional Contracts brings its combustible but sharply crafted sound to an often-pensive look inward. “A lot of these songs are about standing at a certain point in your life and reflecting on what’s transpired so far\, reckoning with the past but looking ahead with a pragmatic hope for the future\,” says Chris. Opening on a blistering burst of guitar\, Emotional Contracts begins that reflection with “If I Try To Leave”–the first-ever co-write between McCauley and O’Neil. “Most of us have families now\, and that song came from imagining how lost and aimless I’d feel if I just walked away from everything\,” says McCauley. “It’s about how much I need that grounding force of family in my life.” “If I Try To Leave\,” partly inspired by the warmth and grit of Keith Richards’s solo records\, builds a sublimely bombastic backdrop to the song’s lucid self-revelation (“Some animals survive/But I only play dead/If I were to leave/From my own beloved”)\, and illuminates Deer Tick’s undeniable gift for twisting melancholy into something glorious. \n  \nNext\, on “Forgiving Ties\,” O’Neil takes the lead for an anguished yet exuberant track that finds McCauley chiming in to play the part of his jittery inner voice–lending another layer of lived-in pathos to the song’s punchy introspection (“All of my confidence/It had a warrant/Knocked on the door/And split open my mind”). “As you get older\, you end up having to come to terms with traumas from your past while also dealing with the weight of certain responsibilities that you maybe didn’t have when you were younger\,” says O’Neil. “That’s especially true of raising a family\, but it also applies to how this band has become more and more precious to us the longer it goes on.” Featuring the spirited trumpet work of Fridmann’s son Jon (who also played flute\, French horn\, glockenspiel\, marimba\, and trombone across various songs)\, “Forgiving Ties” bounces along on a brightly frenetic cascade of rhythms achieved through a mid-session free-for-all. “We had a little party where we all went crazy with a bunch of different percussion items\, like cowbell and a whole other litany of things\,” O’Neil recalls. “It’s a dance song that’s completely authentic to who we are as a band\,” adds Dennis. \nAs revealed throughout Emotional Contracts\, that unbridled authenticity stems from Deer Tick’s staying faithful to their instincts while tapping into the ineffable power of their easy camaraderie. On “Once In A Lifetime\,”  the band shares a gorgeously sprawling and soul-soothing track born from a spontaneously composed accordion part brought in by McCauley. “I recorded a voice memo of me fooling around with this accordion the very first day I bought it years ago\, combined that with another riff\, and then we all made a jam out of it\,” he says. “It turned into a song about how when you see an opportunity you need to take it\, because time is always running out.” Meanwhile\, on “Running From Love\,” Deer Tick deliver a sweetly confessional\, ’70s-R&B-inspired slow-burner that first came to Dennis in a dream. “I dreamed that the band was performing at Roger Williams Park in Providence and we were all singing this song a cappella\, with the whole crowd singing along\,” he says. “I woke up and sang it into my phone while I was rocking the baby\, and then brought it to the band later on. It’s funny because at first I didn’t really take the song seriously\, but with the help of my friends we ended up bringing it to life.” \nAfter the one-two punch of “My Ship” (a lovely reverie co-written by McCauley and The Rugburns’ Steve Poltz) and “A Light Can Go Out In The Heart” (a particularly wistful track from O’Neil)\, Emotional Contracts closes out with the all-enveloping catharsis of “The Real Thing.” Another product of their deliberately free-flowing process\, the nine-minute-long epic emerged from a jam at their rain-battered rehearsal space. “At first I had an idea for a song called ‘The Last Book on the Shelf\,’ which I ended up using as a title for a song about all the creepy book-banning happening lately\,” McCauley notes. “‘The Real Thing’ became about living with depression\, which has been part of my existence since I was a kid\, and how it takes even more work to keep your head above water as you get older.” As the song drifts from brooding urgency to dreamlike grandeur\, Deer Tick intensify its captivating impact with an ever-shifting tapestry of sonic details (moody strings\, reverbed snare\, lush flute melodies\, intermittently muted vocals). “Dave had me go through that song about five times and create different types of feedback for an hour straight\,” O’Neil points out. “It’s a good example of how great he is at piecing together different elements and keeping even a very long song like that exciting all the way through. When I look back on our other records I can remember some incredibly frustrating moments where you’re working on a solo for six hours or something\, but there really was nothing frustrating about making this album.” \nFounded by McCauley in 2004\, with the lineup solidified in 2009\, Deer Tick partly attribute their unfaltering chemistry to a shared sense of humor. To that end\, the album takes its title from an inside joke regarding potential aliases for the band. “We were saying that if we had to play a secret show under a fake name\, we could be The Hitmen and dress in pinstripe suits like Prohibition-era gangsters. Then we decided\, ‘Let’s just release an album as The Hitmen—we’ll call it Emotional Contracts\, like contract-killing on an emotional level\,” says McCauley. “But the title connects here with each song somehow–every song is about a deal you’ve made with yourself at some level.” But as a phenomenally rowdy live act who once averaged 250 shows a year\, Deer Tick mainly credit their deep-rooted connection to a mutual love for the unpredictability of the musical impulse. “I feel very lucky that we all ran into each other at some point pretty early on in our lives\,” says McCauley. “From the start\, I just wanted to find other musicians that would somehow all stick together\, which definitely isn’t easy. But we all have a real fascination with music\, and that desire to never limit ourselves or repeat ourselves is something that we all very much continue to share.” \n\n\n \n\nThelma and the Sleaze\nThelma and The Sleaze is an all female\, queer\, southern-rock and roll band. Established in 2010 by lead singer and guitarist LG in Nashville\, TN. Has opened for Eagles Of Death Metal\, Charles Bradley\, Brittany Howard\, Shovels & Rope\, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers\, Habibi\, The Coathangers

SUMMARY:Joseph\, Gabrielle Grace
DESCRIPTION:Joseph\n\n \n\nOregon-bred indie pop sister group Joseph first made waves with their widely lauded 2015 debut album I’m Alone\, No You’re Not\, which featured their hit song “White Flag.” They followed it up with 2019’s Good Luck\, Kid\, marking a bold departure from the dreamlike folk of their debut and landing them at #4 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. The band continued to push their musical boundaries on 2023’s The Sun\, imbuing a thrilling new energy into each elegantly sculpted track. Over the years\, JOSEPH has attracted the attention of artists such as Billie Eilish and toured with the likes of James Bay\, Amos Lee\, and The Shins\, in addition to taking the stage at major festivals like Coachella\, Bonnaroo\, Austin City Limits\, Glastonbury\, and more. With their signature blend of harmony-driven indie pop and bold experimentation\, Joseph continues to evolve while staying true to the deeply personal themes that have defined their music. Now a duo\, Joseph — Natalie Closner and Meegan Closner — are currently putting the final touches on their next album\, with new music coming in Spring of 2025. \n\nSocial Links\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGabrielle Grace\n\n \n\nGabrielle Grace is a singer and songwriter that writes songs that feel like conversations—sometimes with others\, sometimes with herself. A storyteller at heart\, her music blends warm indie-folk textures with the rawness of alternative pop\, capturing life’s quiet moments and loud emotions with equal weight. Originally from southeast Texas and now based in Nashville\, Grace’s songwriting is deeply personal yet universally resonant\, shaped by the in-between spaces of growing up\, letting go\, and learning to stay present. When she made her musical debut in 2021\, she released her EP\, “We’ll Be Alright\,” which climbed the iTunes singer-songwriter charts. Her debut full-length album\, There Are Two Sides to Everything (2023)\, is an exploration of contrast—hope and doubt\, longing and contentment\, the past and the future—all wrapped in lush melodies and thoughtful lyricism. \nShe’s been writing\, refining\, and pushing her sound forward as she is gearing up to release her new EP\, “Pink Skies” on June 26th\, 2025.

SUMMARY:KAYZO Presents - Unleashed XL '25
DESCRIPTION:Kayzo\n\n \n\nOver the past three years\, Houston born and now Los Angeles resident\, Hayden Capuozzo or KAYZO\, has become one of the most sought after young producer/DJs in the business. The young prodigy has quickly grabbed attention of fans and fellow DJs with his versatile sound and catalogue of original productions\, collaborations and remixes. With the establishment of his “Doghouse” brand\, fans have turned to KAYZO to seek more than his music.\n \nKAYZO has went from a graduate student of the production school\, Icon Collective\, to becoming a winner of Insomniac’s Discovery Project which gave him first chance to showcase himself live. Three years later\, KAYZO can now be found traveling as an international DJ performing at festivals and headlining shows across the globe. KAYZO and his Doghouse stand for more than music but a mental determination with a motto that preaches ‘anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it.’\n \nKAYZO has no boundaries as continues to break barriers that are set up before him. He produces music\, not defined as a genre but what he simply likes and enjoys creating. Much of his influence comes from the music he grew up on and the elements can be heard throughout the bodies of work. Outside of production\, his mixing and versatile style across multiple genres has created a unique and one of a kind performance.\n \nKAYZO and the Doghouse is growing fast and fierce\, what he has accomplished in the past few years is only a testament of what is to come. The future is bright for KAYZO and the Doghouse and nobody knows that better them.\n\nSocial Links\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMust Die!\n\n \n\n\n\nSocial Links\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMachaki\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nSora\n\n \n\n\n\nSocial Links

SUMMARY:PANCHIKO w/ Tanukichan
DESCRIPTION:Panchiko is beginning to settle into rockstar life. It’s different from how the UK band imagined it when they were teens\, crafting ethereal\, at times cosmic bits of heart-forward rock music to little outside interest\, playing shows to nearly empty rooms. They set aside their hopes of becoming full-time musicians and pursued other careers. Their high school artistry became a distant memory. But that all changed in 2016 when an internet user discovered Panchiko’s discarded 2000 demo CD\, D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L\, in a Nottingham charity shop and posted it to 4chan to intrigue and fanfare. It took four years for Panchiko’s legions of dedicated fans to find the people behind the music\, but when they did\, Panchiko’s long let-go-of dreams became an imperative to pursue. Millions of curious listeners were swaying to their adolescent creations; it was time for them to meet their moment. \nPanchiko — which reformed in 2021 with original members Andy Wright (keyboardist and producer)\,  Owain Davies (vocalist and guitarist)\, and Shaun Ferreday (bassist) alongside new members Robert Harris (guitarist) and John Schofield (drummer) — pursued their new path with vigor. Upon discovering their own virality in 2020\, they toured the world and wrote\, recorded\, and released their first album in 20+ years\, 2023’s Failed At Maths. But after the thrill of the whirlwind came a new question. What comes next when your dreams come true? The answer is Ginkgo\, a 13-track project that finds the band making some of their most introspective\, cinematic\, and moving music yet. \n“The whole production has gone up ten-fold\,” says Wright of the new album. They were finally able to quit their day jobs and dedicate themselves to music full-time\, which changed their process completely. “If you have a bit of time\, you can make something really great.” Plus\, the band got their own studio in Nottingham\, which they refer to as their “teenage dream.” With time and space\, making Ginkgo became a very different\, slower process than the creation of Failed at Maths\, which they recorded while balancing their nascent music career with day jobs — alongside the stuff of life\, like the birth of Wright’s child. \nYou can hear the result of this slower approach on tracks like “Chapel of Salt\,” where the lyrics have a gravelly wisdom. “Obsolescence\, greatest lessons/ You can’t afford to miss/Don’t go quietly in the night see/You’re too good for this\,” sings Davies in a steady register\, before the music veers towards the stars. Here too\, the music feels bigger than Panchiko’s earlier work which was colored by a bedroom intimacy. The sonic and lyrical scale is grander\, but maybe a bit more weary and lived-in as well. \nThe lessons of experience were on the band’s mind. After touring the world with songs they had written as teenagers\, Panchiko was beginning to craft music that reflected their current\, more adult reality\, like on “Lifestyle Trainers\,” a drifty swirl of guitar plucks and synth pads that finds the band reflecting on the winding road of long term commitment. But even as Panchiko explored the particulars of middle age\, the teenage versions of themselves (the versions that wrote D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L) were still floating in their minds\, especially given the fact that Panchiko’s fans skew younger themselves. That’s clear on album standout “Shandy In The Graveyard” (featuring billy woods) which Davies shares “came from [him] reconnecting with the feeling of being the age of the audience that comes to see [them].” That youthful spirit can be felt in the song’s sonic world\, as its production genre shifts between trip-hop and orchestral folk. \nWoods’s inclusion is fitting given that American artists and the experience of touring throughout the States has made an indelible impression on Ginkgo. Most of Panchiko’s fans reside in the States\, a place they had little connection to before their virality. “We don’t normally do a lot of shows in England\, because nobody likes us there\,” jokes Wright. “We were too ahead of the time.” Seeing the expanse of a foreign country brought out new sounds and textures for the crew. It’s apt then that the album opener is titled “Florida.” “I was playing around with some samples in the van whilst we were driving through Florida\,” remembers Davies of creating the track. “Writing on the road is cool because you don’t have all the toys in your toy box. You’re using what you got.”  That makes sense given that “Florida” is marked by a diverse set of sounds and musical leaps\, a vast landscape of guitar flourishes\, and almost alien sonic textures. \nNew places\, a new generation of listeners\, a whole new life — the shock of their circumstances often leads Panchiko to reflect on the youth they’ve lost since they recorded their high school demo. “We had to delete ‘My Mortgage Repayments Are Going Up\,’” laughs Wright\, offering a sarcastic song title. And while they decidedly did not record an album about the tedium of adult living\, they did make a record that truthfully reflects their grounded station in life. That was bolstered by the fact that Panchiko made the record largely at home in Nottingham. With that\, the simple promises of home are evoked in every moment of the record\, and on the cover — a picture of Wright’s young daughter that she took herself. “She had just turned two at that point. She ran off with my phone and our album cover was done\,” Wright shares. Even though they paid an artist a hefty advance to make original artwork\, they decided to forgo that art for the picture. It said it all. “It’s pure\,” adds Davies. “It’s not contrived in any way.”  \nThe cover is an invitation to consider the expanse of Panchiko’s experience\, from adolescence and teenage artistry onward. The same wrenching honesty that attracted legions of fans to their teenage demos is the same truthful ethos that keeps them listening to new material. That full-hearted ethos may be most audible on the title track\, “Ginkgo.” On it\, Davies sings “You command the leaves to fall/The Ginkgo bends at will.” A rumination on the limits of control\, collaboration\, and fate\, the song is an apt meditation for a band whose resurgence came about through a mix of luck\, artistry\, and then clear-eyed energy. They couldn’t “command the leaves to fall” when they were teens trudging up the improbable hill of rock star success\, and they still can’t. But like the Ginkgo tree itself\, their roots grow deep\, which makes the going all the easier. \n\n \n\nTanukichan\nTanukichan is the solo project of classically-trained Bay Area native Hannah van Loon\, whose music screeched to a halt when she discovered what she affectionately calls “dad rock” in her tween years. Throughout her self-described “sheltered” adolescence\, van Loon taught herself guitar by spending hours in front of the radio\, replicating riffs and chords from omnipresent bands like The Beatles and Incubus. \nAlthough van Loon is the creator and leader of Tanukichan\, until now\, the project could have been considered a collaboration between her and the Grammy-nominated chillwave pioneer Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi. After seeing an early Tanukichan show in 2016\, Bear expressed an interest in working with van Loon; Radiolove\, Tanukichan’s first headbanger of an EP\, arrived on Bear’s own Company Records that same year. The promising four-song project was followed in 2018 by van Loon’s breakout debut LP\, Sundays\, which prompted her first solo headlining tour and dates opening for artists like Kero Kero Bonito and The Drums. Sundays earned Tanukichan enthusiastic critical acclaim\, with Pitchfork writing that it “captures the spirit of a day whose wide-open nature fosters anxieties as well as ambitions” and Rolling Stone lauding its “bruising riffs\, taut grooves\, and open-road-ready guitar anthems.” \nIn March 2023\, Tanukichan released her sophomore album GIZMO. While still rooted in the eerie shoegaze she’s become known and loved for\, it also sees her go beyond her comfort zone\, incorporating elements of grunge\, industrial synths\, nu metal basslines\, and electric guitars that culminate into a captivating wall-of-sound. Shortly after the release of GIZMO\, van Loon was approached by producer Franco Reid where they bonded over their love for Incubus. That correspondence led to the single “NPC” which was performed while touring heavily in the summer of 2023\, opening for artists like Alex G\, Alvvays\, and Melanie Martinez. \nThe new EP Circles\, out September 20th\, 2024\, solidifies van Loon and Reid’s new partnership taking Tanukichan to new heights and sonic territory that feels larger\, arena-ready\, and more like a highspeed night drive than the hazy summer dream of its predecessors.

SUMMARY:Perfume Genius w/ urika’s bedroom
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, Hadreas released Set My Heart On Fire Immediately\, a critical masterpiece on Matador\nRecords that garnered worldwide acclaim. Produced by GRAMMY winner Blake Mills\, the album\nfeatured contributions from Phoebe Bridgers\, Jim Keltner\, Pino Palladino\, Matt Chamberlin\, Rob\nMoose\, and longtime collaborator Alan Wyffels. It explored and subverted concepts of\nmasculinity and traditional roles\, introducing distinctly American musical influences.Hadreas\npromoted the album with performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (“Jason”)\, The Late Show with\nStephen Colbert (“Whole Life”)\, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (“On The Floor”).\nHe followed with Ugly Season\, a project born from his collaboration with choreographer Kate\nWallich on The Sun Still Burns Here\, a dance piece commissioned by Seattle Theatre Group\nand Mass MoCA and performed across major cities in 2019. The release included a stunning\n30-minute film\, Pygmalion’s Ugly Season\, created with renowned visual artist Jacolby\nSatterwhite\, blending surreal visuals with Hadreas’s music.\nMike Hadreas is now based in Los Angeles with his partner in life and music\, Alan Wyffels. \n\n \n\nurika’s bedroom\nThe bones and performance of a urika’s bedroom song are\, approached from afar\, certainly recognizable as rock music. Eagle-eyed genre-spotters might see it as slowcore\, shoegaze\, dreampop\, emo-adjacent bedroom pop\, mumblecore\, or any other heavily hyphenated amalgamation of melodically-inclined indie or alternative rock. \nBut the true character of these songs reveals itself in their transmission. Coated in digital gauze\, urika’s bedroom’s near-whispered exhortations are cast against spindling and silvery guitar lines\, transmogrified vocal layers\, fascinating artifacts of malfunctioning audio interfaces\, and intrusive textural figures that hit like ambulance sirens bleeding into one’s private headphone symphony. The sound design is idiosyncratic and immaculate\, a cryptic and modern rock idiom birthed from a diplomatic sonic union between Billy Corgan and Christian Fennesz. \nOn Big Smile\, Black Mire — the full length debut due out November 1\, 2024 on True Panther — urika’s bedroom presents this unique vision in full\, rendering a shadowed yet lucid depiction of longing\, alienation\, and multivalent emotional experience with an assured command of avant- garde gesture. It’s a marvel of scene-setting\, a showcase for urika’s bedroom’s instinctive understanding of what makes for an evocative and devastating arrangement. \n“A lot of it is pulling from this point of emotional juxtaposition\, the ability to feel multiple emotions at once\, internally as well as externally\,” urika elaborates. “You’re never 100% sad or 100% happy. On this album\, I’m subconsciously tapping into that conflict\, of feeling one way and being another.” \nBig Smile\, Black Mire is the culmination of several years of artistic growth and refinement for urika’s bedroom. After a warm reception to early singles “Junkie” and “XTC” — both of which appear on bsbm — the LA-based artist brought the project’s insular sound into the real world\, touring with the likes of Youth Lagoon\, Nourished By Time\, and Chanel Beads while also collaborating as a producer and co-writer with untitled (halo) and Ded Hyatt. Self-produced and engineered by urika’s bedroom with additional mixing by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs\, Beach House\, DIIV)\, Big Smile\, Black Mire is built upon the modern art of guitar processing and recontextualization. By and large eschewing synthesizers\, urika’s bedroom — with contributions from ub touring guitarist Silas Johnson\, who otherwise records as Tracy — sculpts an expansive universe of timbres and tones\, ranging from trashy and lived-in skronks to tremulous and liquid beams of melody. \nFor instance\, “XTC” is a grime and glitter daydream\, while “Video Music” is a collision of glitchy percussion and surreal imagery\, scrambling to make sense of a romantic preoccupation: “how to keep you out my head / today\, don’t you think it’s all the same? / racing through this bloodswept cage / today\, it tastes like lithium and rain.” Meanwhile\, “Circle Games” is ominous and industrial\, a rattling meditation on societal decay and “post-war everything.” \nHowever\, any solipsistic dread is cut with a steadfast sense of hope — as on the swirling devotional “Metalhead” — and a resounding empathy for the struggles of others. The spoken interlude of “bsbm\,” one of several tracks featuring vocals from multidisciplinary artist Vivian Buenrostro\, works through word association to grasp for pure humanity amid the technological ennui. \n“Lately when I see somebody encountering challenges\, I still recognize the innocent child they once were\,” says urika. “On a social or individual level\, life is always about growth or collapse. But even in that collapse\, there’s a capability to find light and darkness.” \nBig Smile\, Black Mire is an adept and artful expression of that duality — as urika puts it\, “taking a selfie in front of a burning building.”

SUMMARY:The Marcus King Band
DESCRIPTION:The Marcus King Band\nKnitting Factory – Boise\n416 S. 9th St. – Boise\, ID 83702\nSunJuly 278:00 pm(Doors: 7:00 pm)\nAll Ages\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n\n\n+ Google Calendar\n\n\n\n\n\nArtists\n\n\nThe Marcus King Band\n\n \n\nSongwriter. Guitarist. Singer. Bandleader.  At only 20 years of age\, Marcus King’s dazzling musical ability is evident throughout The Marcus King Band\, the young phenom’s 2nd full-length LP and first for Fantasy Records.  Operating within the fiery brand of American roots music that King calls “soul-influenced psychedelic southern rock\,” the album highlights King’s gorgeous\, rough-hewn vocals\, soaring guitar work and heartfelt songwriting all amidst a group of masterful musicians who\, together\, are quickly becoming one of the country’s most sought after live acts. \nRaised in Greenville\, South Carolina\, King was brought up on the blues\, playing shows as a pre-teen sideman with his father—bluesman Marvin King\, who himself was the son of a regionally-known guitarist—before striking out on his own. Going beyond the sonic textures of his acclaimed 2015 debut album\, Soul Insight; The Marcus King Band broadens his sound\, touching upon everything from funky R&B to Southern soul and Americana in the process. His band gets in on the action too\, stacking the songs with blasts of swampy brass\, a lock-step rhythm section and swirling organ. Ever the multi-tasker\, King bounces between several instruments\, handling electric and acoustic guitar — as well as pedal and lap steel — while driving each track home with his soulful\, incendiary voice. \nHaving spent the past year tirelessly playing ever-larger venues and festivals to a burgeoning fan base\, The Marcus King Band was written on the road and recorded during a series of live takes at Carriage House Studios in Stamford\, CT. The album captures the energy of the band’s blazing live show\, as well as the talent of a rising young songwriter reaching well beyond his years. \n“The majority of our songs are specific to situations I’ve lived\,” King explains. “I write as a form of therapy\, to release my emotions into a musical expression. I want people to know they’re not the only ones going through that pain. Music is the true healer. And when we perform\, we want the audience to leave feeling as tired and as emotionally freed as we do. It’s all about getting the stress of the day off your chest. It’s like therapy.” \nThe Marcus King Band features Jack Ryan on drums and percussion\, Stephen Campbell on bass\, Matt Jennings on keys and organ\, Dean Mitchell on saxophone\, and Justin Johnson on trumpet\, trombone and backing vocals. Joining the band on the new album are a number of mentors and collaborators\, including Derek Trucks (who plays guitar on “Self-Hatred”). \nNo guest plays a bigger role than Warren Haynes\, though. A longtime champion of King’s songwriting and guitar prowess\, Haynes produced every track on The Marcus King Band (and contributed his trademark slide guitar on “Virginia”)\, expertly capturing the group’s live sound for a cohesive collection reflecting the band’s expansive explorations. \n“Marcus is the first player I’ve heard since Derek Trucks to play with the maturity of a musician well beyond his age\,” Haynes says. “He’s very much influenced by the blues\, but also by jazz\, rock\, soul music\, and any timeless genres of music. You can hear the influences\, but it all comes through him in his own unique way. He has one of those voices that instantly draws you in\, and his guitar playing is an extension of his voice and vice versa.” \nA childhood introvert who leaned heavily on music as a way of expressing himself\, King fills The Marcus King Band with a mix of biographical tunes and fictional story songs. “At the time I wrote ‘Self-Hatred\,’ says King\, “the girl I was seeing really hurt me. Broke my heart\, took all of my insecurities and used them against me…she told me she hated herself for what she had said and done to me. I told her I knew exactly how it feels to hate yourself. ‘Self-Hatred’ is within you and me.” \n“Devil’s Land” is loosely based on his grandfather\, who worked on a farm during his younger years\, while the story behind the track “Rita Is Gone” was inspired by the television show Dexter. Meanwhile\, songs like “Guitar In My Hands” peek into King’s personal life — a life filled with highway mile markers\, truck stops\, and a nightly rotation of stages\, all waiting to be filled with the sound of a genre-bending band on the rise. \n“This album is a big melting pot of different kinds of music\,” says King. “It’s the sound of everyone taking their own influences and collectively coming together as a group. We’re all really hungry to play\, and we’re so passionate about this music. I want people to feel the same thing we feel — to leave the show feeling some sense of release. It’s almost like the show ends\, and everyone can take a deep breath together.”
