SUMMARY:Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox - The '10' Tour
DESCRIPTION:The work of Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox has been viewed on the ensemble’s YouTube channel well over a hundred million times. Most of those doing the viewing\, however\, are not fully aware of the method to Bradlee’s madness. On the surface\, the method is video – clips of full-band performances (that’s Bradlee on piano) shot in the bandleader’s living room with a single stationary camera. The madness: pop hits of the present performed à la pop hits of the past. Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” assayed as a doo-wop number; Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” tricked out in flapper jazz; Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” rendered a 1940s big-band standard. In fact\, Bradlee’s method runs deeper. He’s educating his audience about 20th-century song styles; he’s commenting on the elasticity of the pop form; he’s confounding cultural context; he’s uniting generations; he’s breaking the rules. He’s manifesting postmodernist ideas in his approach to production and business as well as music. But as far as the fans are concerned\, it’s just fun (and sometimes funny). Bradlee himself will tell you\, simply\, “I reimagine a song in another style because I want to hear it that way.” Discovering talent and knowing what to do with it is fundamental to the business of music. Bradlee is something of a postmodernist here\, too\, having achieved renown doing everything himself\, mostly online\, “with no budget” (i.e. using the recording equipment he’d had since college). His adherence to the DIY ethos also suggests the decidedly postmodern form of punk rock. “I was a struggling jazz pianist sitting in my basement apartment in Queens\,” he attests\, “but I just figured it out and made it happen.” That said\, punk rock is likely not top of mind for those attending a Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox show. The scene is more reminiscent of a speakeasy\, with swells in vintage threads swilling Prohibition-era cocktails. “It’s a variety show\, a musical revue featuring special guests\,” Bradlee illuminates. “Coming to a PMJ show is like time-traveling back to Old Hollywood – it’s an experience.” Creating that for audiences appears to be PMJ’s ultimate mission.

SUMMARY:THE BROTHERS COMATOSE w/ AJ Lee & Blue Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Brothers Comatose‘s singer-songwriter Ben Morrison share some insight into their latest polarizing single “The IPA Song\,” “We generally use our music to unify people\, but there comes a time for every band when you have to make a statement. This is our most controversial song and we realize that some of our audience will hate us for it\, but it’s time we finally say something: we can’t drink IPAs anymore!” \n“Phew\, that felt good to get off my chest.” \n“In all seriousness though\, we overdid it quite a bit\, back when we were sponsored by a great beer company and they delivered multiple cases of IPA to every tour stop of ours. It was great for a while\, but it got to the point where we had cases and cases of warm IPA in our van and that’s all we drank. Too much warm IPA will change a person\, and now we can only drink light beer. We’re more of a quantity over quality band these days\, at least when it comes to beer.” \n“This song came about because there are lots of craft beer lovers in our musical world and we would find ourselves drinking lots of high alcohol percentage beers when we’re playing shows\, and we just can’t do it anymore. We want to enjoy a few beers while we’re playing without getting too drunk\, and light beer saves us from that. Pabst Blue Ribbon\, if you’re reading this\, we’re still looking for sponsorships!” \nThe Brothers Comatose’s new single “The IPA Song” is available now  \nWhether traveling to gigs on horseback or by tour bus\, Americana mavens The Brothers Comatose forge their own path with raucous West Coast renderings of traditional bluegrass\, country and rock-n-roll music. The five-piece string band is anything but a traditional acoustic outfit with their fierce musicianship and rowdy\, rock concert-like shows. \nThe Brothers Comatose is comprised of brothers Ben Morrison (guitar\, vocals) and Alex Morrison (banjo\, vocals)\, Steve Height (bass)\, Philip Brezina (violin)\, and Greg Fleischut (mandolin\, vocals). When they’re not headlining The Fillmore for a sold-out show or appearing at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, the band is out on the road performing across America\, Canada\, Australia\, and hosting their very own music festival\, Comatopia\, in the Sierra foothills. \nThe San Francisco quintet are heading out for a massive U.S. tour in further support of their most recent album Ear Snacks – a heartwarming collection of collaborations from their Ear Snacks YouTube series. \n\n\n\n \n\nAJ Lee & Blue Summit\nAJ Lee & Blue Summit are an award-winning energetic\, charming\, and technically jaw-dropping band quickly rising on the national roots music scene. Based in Santa Cruz\, California\, the group met as teenagers\, picking and jamming together as kids at local music festivals and jams until one day\, they decided they would be a band. “Our roots go really deep\,” explains de facto band leader Lee. “We met when we were young kids… We definitely decided to choose each other as a chosen family band later on in life\, but in a lot of ways it was naturally just like that in the beginning.” “It was like one of those late at night things\,” she continued. “We were sitting on a trailer at Grass Valley” at the annual Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival held in the Sierra Nevada foothills – “Someone said\, ‘All of us right here\, we’re a band now.’ We kind of didn’t take it seriously\, but we were like\, okay\, we’ll be a band!” \nAnd thank goodness they became a band. Their first gigs were local\, small venues\, cafes\, restaurants\, coffee shops\, where they’d play for multiple hours honing their set list and learning shared musical vocabularies. Now\, as they criss-cross the country performing hundreds of shows a year to larger and larger audiences\, you can sense the intention they had back then – to make music together not for just aspirational reasons\, but because it’s fun – and it’s all you want to do as young musicians. Currently made up of Lee on mandolin\, fiddler Jan Purat\, and guitarists Scott Gates and Sullivan Tuttle\, the band carries that youthful\, festival-parking-lot energy with them still today\, but at the same time there’s a genuine ease and confidence to their music making. This is not the bluegrass of ambitious musicians intent on industry success\, this is music made firstly for the joy of making it and primarily made for each other. It’s part of why\, as they ready their third studio album\, City of Glass – their first label release\, out July 19th via Signature Sounds – their product feels mature and fully realized\, while deep in the Blue Summit pocket. \nCity of Glass is a slow burn album\, remarkable when considered alongside records released by their peers in recent years. Lee & Blue Summit seem unconcerned with mimicking hugely successful jamgrass bands\, or making competitive and performatively intellectual new acoustic music\, or wishing to establish themselves as the superlative string band in their bluegrass\, old-time\, and Americana communities. Instead\, they’re most interested in discovering themselves\, their own music\, and sonics and textures truly their own. So\, when they went into the studio to track City of Glass and its gorgeous twelve tracks\, they once again forsook the roads most traveled by\, looking to their local California community for collaborators that also feel right at home in their chosen family band. They brought in Lech Wierzynski\, of the California Honeydrops\, to produce; they tapped Bay Area steel guitarist Mikiya Matsuda for a couple of tracks; plus they had Californian banjo player\, instructor\, and Father’s Day Fest veteran Luke Abbott lend five-string to a number. \nThe group is proud to be Californian\, proud to represent the neo-traditionalist bluegrass and folk from the state and the mighty communities surrounding them. Their music shines with this “think global\, act local” sort of approach. On a track called\, “Can’t Find You At All\,” they even included a sort of reunion of “The Tuttles featuring AJ Lee” – the true family band from their early childhoods that also included Lee\, Sully Tuttle\, Grammy Award winner Molly Tuttle\, and their father Jack Tuttle – who wrote “Can’t Find You At All”. \n“I thought\, Sully’s on the track and Jack wrote it\,” Lee explains. “So\, I would love for Molly to sing on it\, because it does feel like a mini reunion of The Tuttles… It just feels like coming back to where technically my career started\, with them.” Throughout City of Glass\, an overarching sense emerges that this is a band who knows who they are\, what they are trying to say\, and who can help them say it. They know they don’t “need” a banjo to be a bluegrass band. They know they\, like so many bluegrass groups with mainstream appeal\, know how to make two flatpicking guitarists work in concert\, together. And\, with Wierzynski at the control room helm\, they were able to preserve that feeling of grounded self-assuredness indelibly through these songs\, while still challenging themselves outside of their comfort zones and outside of the musical box. Focusing on these qualities and bringing in creatives they trusted\, they were able to craft an album that sounds exactly like AJ Lee & Blue Summit while still breaking endless new ground. “Having a powerhouse vocalist and someone we trusted in the control room was really valuable and really fun\,” Jan Purat says. “I think it removed a lot of the headiness and back and forth… It felt like it was streamlined\, in certain ways\, being able to trust his judgment\, even though he was from a different genre.” Wierzynski also brought songs to the band\, a stunning cover of the soul classic “He Called Me Baby” and a song he wrote\, “Bedside Window\,” which is rendered by the band as an archetypical bluegrass “fast waltz.” Wierzynski prioritized making the band sound exactly like themselves\, producing the vocals to be and sound live whenever possible\, moving the band along when a take checked all the boxes\, and still bringing in genre and aesthetic inspirations that feel brand new. City of Glass\, as a result\, is an album that’s just as much country soul and gritty\, bluesy Americana as it is bluegrass\, all framed through a California folk lens while clearly primed for a much wider audience. The title track is a beautiful and evocative metaphor that conjures the climate crisis and holds an inspiring degree of self-awareness\, from this group of young folks. As they sing of a wonderful monument to human kind’s achievements\, an awesome and temporal city made of glass\, grain by grain\, shard by shard\, they put the fleeting and intangible qualities of a life as professional musicians under the same lens\, once again reinforcing that their priorities in music cannot simply be achievements and success. After all\, they know that\, someday\, all of this will fade away. As such\, as much as possible\, they have their eyes trained first and foremost on the present moment. \n“I’ve learned through songwriting and creating music that you shouldn’t hold anything as precious as you think you should\,” Lee says\, speaking about writing “City of Glass.” “We’re all happy to experience life with each other and to see what this band turns into\, but there’s no expectation that this monument we’ve built will stand forever.” \nPerhaps this is why it feels like\, whether on stage or in the studio\, Blue Summit pours all of themselves into every song\, every lyric\, and every note. “I think it would lose meaning if it did last forever\,” Gates agrees. “For so long making music for a living was ‘ride or die\,’ but now we’re very much in the moment and we understand that nothing lasts forever. All I care about is just the next step and not skipping any steps in between.” \nThe slow burn of City of Glass certainly reaches its tenor\, but never in a performative\, belabored\, or corny way. There are many moments of tension and release\, of musical climaxes that are tender and subdued or silly and winking – and yes\, absolutely barn burning\, too. “Seaside\,” written by Sully Tuttle\, feels pulled directly from a Steinbeck paean to coastal California. “Bakersfield Clay\,” penned by Gates\, could have been divinely implanted in his head from Haggard or Owens or any number of lonesome troubadours longing for their southern California home while also longing to leave it behind. “I Still Think of Her” is one of the album’s jewels\, a delicious and pining love song with a queer throughline that wrinkles its common\, countryfied format in a truly one-of-a-kind way. Like “Can’t Find You At All\,” the band finds power here with a less is more approach\, building energy without necessarily raising the volume or tempo. Each song demands your full attention\, builds intentionally to the next\, and gently guides their listeners through exciting and heartfelt twists and turns\, musically\, lyrically\, and melodically. AJ Lee & Blue Summit’s City of Glass is statuesque\, while living and breathing. It’s a monument not to ego and virtuosity and self-absorption\, but to what beauty can exist when a handful of musicians who know each other so deeply and care for each other so innately choose each other\, show after show\, day after day\, song after song. AJ Lee & Blue Summit are an exemplary band so unconcerned with being remembered\, with being enshrined\, that they have gone about making a set of songs that will surely be held onto and cherished forever. City of Glass may one day crumble\, but this music will never fade away.

SUMMARY:LUCERO w/ Vandoliers
DESCRIPTION:LUCERO – Should’ve Learned by Now \nThe search for one’s identity is a lifelong process that every individual must go through. Who someone is today\, is not the person they were yesterday nor who they may be tomorrow. Despite those changes\, there is a general idea of a defined sense of self.  No matter what happens\, it is that small yet solid and grounding definition of self that continues to drive us forward in our search for identity and whatever may come with it. \nIt would be difficult to find any artist who understands that better than the band Lucero. \nSince forming in Memphis in the late 90’s\, Lucero’s base musical hallmarks have remained similar to the band’s initial sound established with their first record The Attic Tapes. In the history of their expansive discography\, Lucero has evolved and embraced everything from southern rock to Stax-inspired Memphis soul\, whilst simultaneously maintaining their distinctive sonic foundations. Over 20 years later\, dedicated fans of the group still flock to hear the band’s punchy driving rhythms\, punk-rooted guitar licks\, and lyrics that evoke the whiskey drenched sentimentality of Americana singer-songwriters. As expected of any band built to survive\, Lucero has welcomed change over the course of their career\, but it has always been on their terms. \nThe band’s twelfth album\, Should’ve Learned by Now\, began its life as hardly more than some rough demos and lingering guitar parts. These pieces that were left behind from the band’s previous albums\, Among the Ghosts (2018) and When You Found Me (2021) were deemed too uptempo and capering for the prior records’ darker themes. \n   \n“I had a particular sound I was looking for on each record and there was no room for any goofy rock & roll or cute witticisms or even simply upbeat songs\,” said primary lyricist and frontman\, Ben Nichols. “But now finally\, it was time to revisit all of that stuff and get it out in the world. That’s how we got to the appropriately-for-us-titled album Should’ve Learned by Now. The album is basically about how we know we are fuckups and I guess we are ok with that.” \nThe band\, comprised of all its original members (which in addition to Ben Nichols\, includes Brian Venable on guitar\, Roy Berry on drums\, John C. Stubblefield on bass\, and Rick Steff on keys) teamed up for a third time with producer and Grammy Award-winning engineer and mixer\, Matt Ross-Spang. Lucero began the recording process in Sam Phillips Recording Service before transitioning and finishing the record in Ross-Spang’s newly opened Southern Grooves Productions in Memphis\, TN. Ross-Spang appears to have settled in with the band’s more trademark sound whilst very much making his touch known to listeners. \n“He knows how to take the sounds we’re making on our own and just kind of polish them up in the right way. Or dirty it up in the right way. Whatever it takes\, he just kind of does it\,” says Nichols. \nThe first track from the album “One Last F.U.” is a punchy and somewhat combative song which was one of the original remnants of Among the Ghosts. Despite its title\, “One Last F.U.” is less about standoffishness and more a self-reflection on the kind of people we are capable of being in difficult situations. According to Nichols “The rest of the song was simply about wanting to be left alone while I drank at the bar. That could be taken in a kind of grumpy/antagonistic way\, but I feel ok singing the song because I’ve been both characters in the song at different times. Sometimes I’m the one wanting to be left alone and sometimes I’m the drunk one blabbing all night to someone that just wants to be left alone.” Right off the bat\, Nichols’ vocals are awash in rock and roll slap-back reverb. The effect pushes Nichols’ naturally upfront vocals wider\, so they fill the space in a manner more akin to a live performance. It’s one of a few new production effects that extend throughout the record and add a new level of presence and attitude to the band’s sound. \nThe second track\, “Macon if We Make It”\, was inspired by the band having to traverse through Georgia during a hurricane. When asked where the next stop on the tour was\, the band responded with\, “Macon\, if we make it.” Continuing to be reminiscent of older works\, “Macon if We Make It” has echoes of the band’s 2009 album 1372 Overton Park. The song is really driven by guitarist Brian Venable’s formidable electric guitar. The lyrics seem at first to be mostly preoccupied with a literal storm situation at hand but turn out to be more about a troubled relationship back home. The proverbial dam breaks when the narrator sings “I don’t know if we were in love. I just know it wasn’t enough. Got caught in the storm and the water it’s rising…” The song gives way to a powerful drum lead up by Roy Berry and the listener is carried out\, like a raft\, on a ripping guitar solo. \nThe pushes and pulls\, builds and breakdowns are all over the album’s subsequent tracks\, but it isn’t all hard-edged rock and roll all the time. “She Leads Me”\, is inspired somewhat by the classic tale of Orpheus and Eurydice\, and delves into a softer and more nostalgic sound. With backing vocals supplied by Jesse Davis and Cory Branan\, it’s a song that lyrically rests on the concept that we sometimes need to recognize and acknowledge our past for a gentle enough reassurance to move forward. \nThe rest of the album dives right back into its more rock and roll songs with “At the Show” and “Nothing’s Alright”\, both of which examine the highs and lows of remembering old loves\, reminiscing on the old days\, and contented introspection. Aspects which finally come to a head in the album’s title track “Should’ve Learned by Now”\, a rough and edgy song that tackles the fact that all the lessons\, though clearly recognized\, have yet to sink in. Quite poetically\, the song is set to a tune that may be the greatest call back to Lucero’s punk upbringing. \nFrom its original Ben Nichols-designed cover art to its credits\, the album is a reflection of a band that knows itself. Should’ve Learned by Now bridges the gap musically between “old Lucero” and “new Lucero” in a manner which affixes the band’s position as the perfect intersection of punk initiative with hard-earned artistry. It’s an album that recognizes the past in its sound and content\, but leaves the door wide open to the future and for the lessons still in store. \n\n\n\n \n\nVandoliers\nVandoliers are a uniquely Texas band\, distilling the Lone Star State’s vast and diverse musical identity into a raucous\, breakneck vibe that’s all their own. After spending much of the last three years furiously writing and recording music\, this Dallas-Fort Worth six-piece is back with The Vandoliers\, a new album that proves these rowdy\, rollicking country punks are tighter\, more cohesive and more sonically compelling than ever. \nForged in the fires of the COVID-19 pandemic\, The Vandoliers is the product of a time of immense growth and change for the band. Though most of the record was written in 2019\, following the release of their much-acclaimed album Forever\, plans changed quickly in March 2020. “It was supposed to be a quick turnaround\,” frontman Joshua Fleming says. “After touring with Lucero and the Toadies\, we were supposed to go into the studio to knock out an album\, and head to Europe for the first time.” That didn’t happen —their tours were canceled\, the band’s label folded\, and what was to come next was totally up in the air. \nRecorded with Grammy-winning producer Eric Delegard at Reeltime Audio in Denton\, TX\, The Vandoliers is an album interrupted. The band’s original two-week recording session ended abruptly in March 2020 as shutdowns began across the globe. The band didn’t get back into the studio until November\, at which point they realized that\, like many of the best-laid plans\, their original strategy for the record had to change. “We wanted to make an album that had the same power as our live performance — a tight\, big sound\,” Fleming says. “Through trial and error\, label closure\, fatherhood\, sobriety\, relapse\, the album grew on its own stylistically. After the hardest two years of my life\, we created a collection of songs that push us as musicians\, songs that reaffirmed my place as a songwriter and a faith in ourselves as a band I don’t think we had before.” \nAmid all that uncertainty\, Vandoliers did what they knew best: they made music. First came “Every Saturday Night\,” a pandemic-era appreciation of all the rowdy\, late-night shows that we all missed while stuck at home. “I thought for sure that this would be the last song I would ever write. I missed all the little things about the life I lived up until that point\,” Fleming says. “I missed the smells and tastes of a smoky dive bar\, the long overnight drives listening to our favorite bands.” Those thoughts clearly struck a chord with listeners\, earning the song heavy rotation on the radio\, especially Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country\, and jumpstarting the band’s plans to head back into the studio to encapsulate their electric live shows into the album that would eventually grow into The Vandoliers. \nThe Vandoliers is a manifesto\, both sonically and lyrically. It’s an assertion of the band’s distinct character\, their sonic rebelliousness\, and big\, bold stage presence. They’ve got range\, too\, but that should be expected from a band that deftly blends mariachi horns with country-punk rhythms. On “The Lighthouse\,” tender vocals pair with Travis Curry’s delicate fiddle to create a sweet cowpunk lullaby written for Fleming’s one-year-old daughter Ruby Mae\, born at the height of the pandemic. And then there’s “Bless Your Drunken Heart\,” a hard-driving ode to the town drunk that makes apt use of the South’s favorite passive-aggressive slight and has quickly become a favorite at the band’s live shows\, and “I Hope Your Heartache’s a Hit\,” a swinging\, swaggering tribute to a one-night-stand written by multi-instrumentalist Cory Graves. \nTaken all together\, this impressive fourth album builds to what is the Vandoliers’ most cohesive effort to date without sacrificing any of the distinct identity that makes the band work as well touring alongside punkers Flogging Molly as they do opening for independent country legends the Turnpike Troubadours or Dallas rockers the Old 97s. Few bands can bring together the square toes and the steel toes quite like the Vandoliers. As its members have grown and matured\, so has the sound of Vandoliers. But what remains the same\, though\, is the band’s core philosophy of solidarity and hope\, evidenced by the motto they’ve all had tattooed on their arms: Vandoliers Forever\, Forever Vandoliers. \nVandoliers are Joshua Fleming\, bassist Mark Moncrieff\, drummer Trey Alfaro\, fiddler Travis Curry\, electric guitarist Dustin Fleming\, and multi-instrumentalist Cory Graves. Formed in 2015\, the band released 2016’s Ameri-Kinda and 2017’s The Native on State Fair Records\, and Forever (2019) on Bloodshot Records.

SUMMARY:BEAR GRILLZ w/ Vastive
DESCRIPTION:Bear Grillz Presents The Underland Tour \nText “BEARGRILLZBOISE” to +1 (833) 213-2203 for early bird access code \n\n\n\n \n\nVastive\nRanging from the power of dub to the energy of drum and bass and everything in between\, Vastive hails from the east coast known as the “Bully on the Block”. Solidified on the grounds of all things bass and metal\, the #bullyontheblock has set forth a vision to bring home the balance between sanity and chaos. \nIn the booth or on the decks; pure and raw emotion fueled by the sounds of peace and absolute destruction are to be expected. With roots as the lead singer in a metal band\, Vastive is no stranger of playing in front of a crowd and putting on a stellar performance. \nAlongside Vastive’s impressive composition and skillful production\, he strives to include his vocals in his tracks to help set him apart from the rest. Vastive’s fresh take on bass music has landed him releases on Never Say Die\, Subsidia\, Space Yacht Records and more\, while receiving support from industry heavyweights such as Excision\, Sullivan King\, Kayzo\, Slander\, Bear Grillz\, PhaseOne\, Calcium and the list keeps going. With an impressive resume and no plans on slowing down\, Vastive is here to make his mark in the bass music community and beyond.
