SUMMARY:DevilDriver w/ Upon A Burning Body\, Ov Sulfur\, Cultus Black
DESCRIPTION:As iconic groove metal leaders DEVILDRIVER enter their third decade with 9 full-length albums\, countless international tours and worldwide renown\, they prove more resilient than ever. As the world was upended in 2020\, DEVILDRIVER didn’t pause\, releasing the highly-acclaimed first installment of their two-part Dealing With Demons saga\, Dealing With Demons I. Media mainstays like Revolver\, Metal Hammer\, Kerrang and Consequence lauded the album\, which debuted at #4 on the US Current Hard Music Albums Chart. Blabbermouth stated\, “If the second half of this mammoth endeavor matches the first\, this will be remembered as a pivotal moment in the DEVILDRIVER story.” As society emerges more hardened and determined than before\, so does DEVILDRIVER’s 10th full-length\, Dealing With Demons Vol. II. Produced and engineered by Steve Evetts with additional engineering from guitarist Mike Spreitzer\, Dealing With Demons Vol. II is inarguably heavier and relentlessly harsher than its predecessor. Dealing With Demons Vol. II represents not only the most vicious of the two records\, but also the darkest recesses of iconic frontman Dez Fafara’s psyche and the final purging of his demons that have long haunted the band’s music\, bringing together the elements that make DEVILDRIVER the best at their craft. If there is any question as to whether DEVILDRIVER is slowing down\, the new album proves that 20 years into their career\, even with their demons in tow – they move forward at the forefront of metal. \n\n \n\nUpon A Burning Body\nOn a mission to prove that everything\, even metal\, is bigger in Texas\, San Antonio-based quintet  batter crowds with their driving brand of mosh-ready deathcore. Delivering plenty of massive riffs\, punishing breakdowns\, and hardcore-style gang choruses\, the group has a sound that’s surprisingly infectious in what is typically a highly malevolent\, take-no-prisoners genre. The band signed on with Sumerian Records\, and in 2010 released its debut album\, \, on the influential metal label. Upon a Burning Body followed up with their sophomore effort\, \, in 2012. The hard-charging\, Will Putney-produced  dropped in 2014\, followed in 2016 by \, which featured the blistering single “Til the Break of Dawn.” \nNow with Seek & Strike\, the band strives forward delivering their most honest and crushing metal experience yet\, . No gimmicks\, no hard sell\, just straight up Texas style\, American\, metal. \n\n\n \n\nOv Sulfur\nYou’d think Ricky Hoover made a deal with the devil. Just over a year since inception\, Vegas blackened deathcore collective Ov Sulfur has burned bright as a Norwegian church. \nDebut LP ‘The Burden Ov Faith’ is the morning after that blasphemic blaze\, the sun shining through ash floating like snow. It’s opulent in its cinematic beauty\, yet with an underlying darkness that won’t wash away. It’s an epic call-to-arms\, not to raise one’s torch as much as question why they would. Less burn down a church and more take down religion as a whole. It’s about to get goddamn apocalyptic. \nThe burning church is as much about illuminating Hoover’s longstanding qualms with religion as obliterating it. Yet obliterate the album does\, starting with slamming firestorm “Stained In Rot\,” teasing Hoover’s impressive singing\, contrasting his gnarly gutturals. “Befouler” follows with technical riffing and an unexpectedly catchy chorus\, before crumbling into a brutal breakdown ft. Alex Terrible. That Hoover keeps up with that masked madman\, Left to Suffer’s Taylor Barber and Bodysnatcher’s Kyle Medina is impressive though not surprising. That he holds his own alongside the operatic Howard Jones (Light The Torch\, ex-Killswitch Engage) is. The epic title track closes it with beautiful melodies care of Lindsay Schoolcraft\, formerly of Cradle of Filth. \nOv Sulfur’s debut spans the stygian realms of deathcore\, black metal and metalcore\, creating something as majestic as burgeoningly hook-laden and brutal. \n\n\n \n\nCultus Black\n\nCultus Black is an aggressive hard-hitting music project that identifies itself as a cult. Their music is unapologetic and intense\, yet it is often marked with mesmerizing melodies that could draw in even the most cynical listener. Cultus Black is also identified by their strange appearance. The frontman who simply calls himself “L” stalks stages in ritualistic body paint as other cult members surround him in opaque masks.

SUMMARY:Molchat Doma
DESCRIPTION:Molchat Doma (translated as “Houses Are Silent”)\, founded in 2017 in Minsk\, Belarus\, stands at the intersection of post-punk\, new-wave and synth-pop. Dark yet danceable\, and with a heavy dose of goth ethos\, their music is reminiscent of the masters that predate them\, but make no mistake: Molchat Doma creates a sound and meaning that is immediately recognizable as all their own. \nThe band is comprised of Egor Shkutko\, who sings the Russian lyrics in his deep monotone\, Roman Komogortsev on guitar\, synths\, and drum machine\, and Pavel Kozlov on bass and synths. \nThey self-released their first album\, S krysh nashikh domov (С крыш наших домов\, ‘From The Roofs of Our Houses’) in 2017 and later released their second album\, Etazhi (Этажи\, ‘Floors’) in 2018. After gaining popularity worldwide\, they signed to American independent label Sacred Bones Records in 2020\, who reissued their albums\, marking their first releases in North America. The song “Sudno” doesn’t leave the global top viral on Spotify since April 2020. \nTheir third studio album\, Monument (Монумент)\, was released on 13 November 2020. \nDespite playing to packed clubs no matter whether it’s in London\, New York\, Warsaw\, Los Angeles\, Helsinki\, Belgrad\, or Berlin. \n\n \n\nDITZ (UK)\n\n‘Never Exhale’ is the sound of a band that hasn’t stopped for a breath. DITZ have toured relentlessly since the release of their first album ‘The Great Regression’ and even before\nthat\, travelling at least 100 days a year since COVID. The songs that form their newest offering were written across Europe\, often on off days and in borrowed rehearsal rooms just to break up the long drives. \nIt could be said that the band treat recording and release of music as an afterthought. Often playing songs live years before their release\, tweaking them as they go. The songs on the final record may change before they are ever heard as part of the album. \nFormed in late 2015 and playing their first show the following summer\, DITZ came together after vocalist C.A. Francis\, guitarist Anton Mocock and bass player Caleb Remnant went to watch METZ and Lightning Bolt and Concorde 2 in Brighton. “Let’s do that.” A few shows in they picked up current guitarist Jack Looker\, although his original position was behind the drum kit. After a few singles such as ‘Seeking Arrangement’\, ‘Gayboy’ and ‘Total 90’\, the band arrived at its current lineup with Sam Evans joining on drums. This was summer 2019. The band embarked on their first proper headline tour at the start of 2020\, completing it just before the world shut down. They made use of this time wisely\, holing up in the closed pub that Sam lived in an worked at to write parts of their first album. As soon as they could play shows again\, they did\, managing to get several tours under their belt before the release of their debut album “The Great Regression” in 2022. One of these tours was dubbed “the brexit tour” by the band. “We got in a van and tried to play the most random small towns we could\, often just to the opening bands and some regulars. It was character building trying to win over these audiences that really couldn’t give a shit. Chichester was a particular highlight.” Francis remarks. \nAfter the album’s release things began to take off for the band\, shows started selling out\, both in the UK and Europe\, publications such as Pitchfork heaped praise on the album and the band had to start thinking about writing another. The problem was that they were always on the road. The answer was to write them on days off\, the result is an album that reflects the sound of the road. \n‘Never Exhale’ was largely recorded at Holy Mountain studios in London during a freezing cold January. The process was fraught with obstacles. The original plan\, to go and record in Rhode Island\, was abandoned when DITZ were offered a support tour with IDLES\, although the album was still mixed by the originally intended engineer\, Seth Manchester (Model/Actriz\, Lingua Ignota\, Big Brave). The result is an album hardened by the pressure of its own making. Laboured but not loved. \nThe album themes reveal themselves more on further listens. The opening gambit ‘Taxi Man’ is an exploration into what it would be like to weigh up your impact on the world. The eponymous taxi man could be seen as a St Peter type figure\, or like Charon\, ferrying the dead into the underworld. The song was written in Cologne on the second day of a two-day songwriting session. The first day was a bust. Nothing was achieved outside of general frustration between the band members. The atmosphere was soured by months\non the road. This carried on the next day\, the band members reluctantly arriving separately in drips and drabs. As if out nowhere\, Looker came up with the central riff which was quickly strengthened by Remnant’s contribution. The lyrics came from poem written by Francis in the Taxi Ride home the previous day. \nFurther on the album explores themes of unnecessary hatred and division in ‘Space/Smile’ and ‘It Smells Like Something Died In Here’\, ‘Senor Siniestro’ looks at aging and in ‘The Body As A Structure’the separation of the physical from an ingrained sense of reality. It’s political\, but ultimately personal. More Genet or Kafka than Orwell or Huxley. \nSonically the album has its roots in the usual DITZ influences\, classic noise rock such as The Jesus Lizard or Shellac\, or the obtuse post punk of the Fall\, but also brings in fresh influences. ‘Space/Smile’ in particular holds these references aloft. The initial demo was a slower affair written by Remnant\, revved up in the rehearsal room by the fury the track demanded. The closing track ‘Britney’\, could be compared to Radiohead or Mogwai. Jack wrote the initial version of the instrumental on weekend at home with family. It was an attempt to reconcile two different emotions. It was tentatively shared with the rest of the band\, Looker believing they would pass on something so different from what they’ve previously released. He was wrong and they embraced the chance for experimentation. Francis’s lyrics reflecting the vulnerability of the instrumental. \nOverall the album is a clear development from their first effort. A sign of things to come
