SUMMARY:LUTAN FYAH w/ Droop Lion
DESCRIPTION:Rootsy reggae singer with messages of unity\, love\, & justice deeply embedded in his music\, Lutan Fyah was born in the parish of St. Catherine\, Jamaica\, with music in his blood. With his grandfather running a sound system\, artists such as Lieutenant Stitchie\, Papa San\, Lady G.\, and the legendary Dennis Brown would often visit the family home. Fyah aspired to become a famous singer himself\, but he also took his soccer playing seriously and joined a professional team after finishing high school. He gave up sports in 1999 and began an internship at Buju Banton’s Gargamel label. He went on to record some tracks for Banton’s label along with some freelance work for other producers\, before singer Jah Mason came along in 2001 and offered Fyah the support slot on his worldwide tour. Three years later he made his full-length debut with Dem No Know Demself on the Minor7Flat5 label. Time and Place on the Lustre Kings label followed in 2005. A year later he released two albums\, Phantom War on Greensleeves and Healthy Lifestyle on VP Records. Fast forward to 2021 Lutan Fyah started his own record label Old Capital Music Group headquarters in the United States with a strategic partnership with Stand Out Living Original. Lutan Fyah & his team have been preparing for the release of his next album along side the Lutan Fyah Reggae documentary & other new EP’s & singles released under his own label with the exciting distribution partnership with Symphonic. SUMMARY:WAXAHATCHEE w/ Tré Burt
DESCRIPTION:‘Tigers Blood’ by Waxahatchee \nOne of the hardest working singer-songwriters in the game is named Katie Crutchfield. She was born in Alabama\, grew up near Waxahatchee Creek. Skipped town and struck out on her own as Waxahatchee. That was over a decade ago. Crutchfield says she never knew the road would lead her here\, but after six critically acclaimed albums\, she’s never felt more confident in herself as an artist. While her sound has evolved from lo-fi folk to lush alt-tinged country\, her voice has always remained the same. Honest and close\, poetic with Southern lilting. Much like Carson McCullers’s Mick Kelly\, determined in her desires and convictions\, ready to tell whoever will listen. \nAnd after years of being sober and stable in Kansas City–after years of sacrificing herself to her work and the road–Crutchfield has arrived at her most potent songwriting yet. On her new album\, Tigers Blood\, Crutchfield emerges as a powerhouse–an ethnologist of the self–forever dedicated to revisiting her wins and losses. But now she’s arriving at revelations and she ain’t holding them back. \nCrutchfield says that she wrote most of the songs on ‘Tigers Blood’ during a “hot hand spell\,” while on tour in the end of 2022. And when it came time to record\, Crutchfield returned to her trusted producer Brad Cook\, who brought her sound to a groundbreaking turning point on 2020’s Saint Cloud. \nThey hunkered down at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo\, Texas–a border town known for cotton and pecans–and searched for another turn\, waited for a sign. Initially\, MJ Lenderman\, Southern indie-rock wunderkind (much like Crutchfield when she started out) came to play electric guitar and sing on “Right Back To It.” But as soon as they tracked it\, Cook told Lenderman he had to stay for the rest of the album. And he did. \n“Right Back To It” is ‘Tigers Blood’’s lead single. A nod to country duets like Gram and Emmylou\, winding over a steadfast banjo from Phil Cook. Together\, Crutchfield and Lenderman harmonize on the chorus: “I’ve been yours for so long/We come right back to it/I let my mind run wild/Don’t know why I do it/But you just settle in/Like a song with no end.” Crutchfield says it’s the first real love song she’s ever written. \nThe song “Bored” opens with blase drum beats from Spencer Tweedy that crash under Crutchfield as she throws her voice high: “I can get along/ My spine’s a rotted two by four/Barely hanging on/My benevolence just hits the floor.” Lenderman’s scuzzy riffs and Nick Bockrath’s climbing pedal steel add power to the album’s most ‘Southern Rock’ a la Drive-By Truckers moment. \n“365” is a story of recognition told from a hard-won place of self-acceptance/forgiveness. Crutchfield initially started writing it for Wynonna Judd\, with whom she has written and performed in the past\, until the lyrics started hitting closer and closer to home. The writer Annie Ernaux says\, “writing is to fight forgetting.” Like Lucinda Williams\, Crutchfield’s lyrics are memoir. Throughout ‘Tigers Blood’ Crutchfield is addressing a “you\,” but the ‘you’ in “365” evokes raw closeness\, vulnerability. “Ya ain’t had much luck but grace is/In the eye of the beholder/And I had my own ideas but/I carried you on my shoulders\, anyways.” \n“365” is essentially ‘Tigers Blood’’s aria about addiction\, with little to no accompaniment to Crutchfield’s voice. Her backing band is hushed\, as if the spotlight’s coming down on her\, alone on the stage\, giving her testimony. Crutchfield slings her voice with arresting precision\, reaching its highest harmony on the whole album. “So when you kill\, I kill/And when you ache\, I ache/And we both haunt this old lifeless town/And when you fail\, I fail/ When you fly\, I fly/And it’s a long way to come back down.” \n“365” circles back to the beginning of ‘Tigers Blood\,’ where Crutchfield’s words ring clear as a bell. Album opener “3 Sisters” starts with Crutchfield singing over hymn-like piano chords: “I pick you up inside a hopeless prayer/I see you beholden to nothing/I make a living crying it ain’t fair/And not budging.” ‘Tigers Blood’ is Crutchfield at her most confident and resilient. Staring straight at the truth\, forgiving but not forgetting\, not batting an eye. \n— Ashleigh Bryant Phillips \n\n\n\n \n\nTré Burt\nTré Burt was standing on a stage in Philadelphia in early 2023 when the latest bit of bad news arrived: His grandfather\, a native of that very city\, was dead. It wasn’t entirely unexpected. For years\, Tommy Burt had struggled with early-onset dementia\, slipping away a bit more each time Burt saw him. Burt even began recording his grandfather\, letting his tape recorder roll as they had some of their final conversations. He wanted to preserve those moments\, however repetitious or fragmented they might be\, before the opportunity vanished forever. In fact\, Traffic Fiction—Burt’s third album on Oh Boy Records and an unexpected musical reinvention rooted in his new and idiosyncratic version of classic soul—also preserves their relationship by committing another key piece of it to tape. The soul that animates so many of these 14 tracks? That was the music shared by grandfather and grandson. \nBurt’s California childhood was not easy. His parents split when he was young\, so he would often shuttle between their houses in Sacramento and the Bay Area. He was a bit of a wild child\, too. From time to time\, though\, he would accompany his father to work at a plant nursery\, riding shotgun in a 1975 Cadillac Seville as they listened to The Delfonics and Otis Redding\, Marvin Gaye and The Temptations. Those drives were his sanctuary\, that music their blessed score. \nBut as Burt became a musician himself\, he was a peripatetic troubadour\, tapping into American folk and blues partly as a matter of necessity—it’s not sensible to busk\, after all\, with some sophisticated band at your back. Bits of those other roots and compositional ambitions finally emerged on 2021’s You\, Yeah\, You\, the vivid result of Burt’s first proper studio sessions. On Traffic Fiction\, they are in full bloom\, from the sweet country-soul surrealism of the title track to the skywriting rock of “2 For Tha Show\,” Burt as urgent and commanding as he’s ever been. Traffic Fiction is the sound of Burt confidently bending a sentimental past to his present will. \nTo get to this new alchemy of soul\, dub\, and more than a little punk\, Burt returned to the basics—self-recording in sequestered silence. During a Canadian tour\, he set aside a few days to stay in a friend’s spare apartment and write\, renting enough instruments from the affordable gear emporium Long & McQuade to build a makeshift studio for his GarageBand demos. The title track soon emerged\, its effortless magnetism prompted by a poem he’d written about stupid city congestion and a piece by saxophonist and singer Gary Bartz. \nBurt recognized he had found the sound of the next album\, so he booked another rural cabin in Canada for 9 days and rented more guitars\, basses\, and the same keyboard he’d bought during the You\, Yeah\, You sessions. For the better part of a lifetime\, Burt had told himself he didn’t have the chops to sing like those childhood heroes from the Cadillac days. But now\, as he built his one-man-band demos before returning to Nashville’s The Bomb Shelter to work with a trusted band of pals and esteemed producer Andrija Tokic\, his versions of those sounds poured out in circumspect love songs and joyous tunes of existential reckoning. His grandfather was dying. The world was struggling with a pandemic and the specter of a third world war. But Burt gave himself permission to have fun and be funny\, to let these songs lift him and\, eventually\, maybe others\, too. \nTraffic Fiction indeed feels like a buoy amid these turbulent times\, something that pulls us above the wreckage. The love-or-something-like-it songs are crucial. With its rocksteady motion\, rainbow keys\, and slippery riff\, “Wings for a Butterfly” is Burt’s honeyed plea to at least try a relationship out. Like The Beatles rebottled in Muscle Shoals\, the brilliant “To Be a River” crescendos in a litany of all the things Burt knows he can be for someone—“your favorite word\, a letter you read.” It is pure infatuation. \nEven ostensible breakup songs luxuriate in the wonder of existence. “Santiago” recounts an overseas tryst that ended too soon\, Burt jubilantly narrating moments of mirth and lust over go-go keyboards and a beat so simple and propulsive The Ramones would have loved it. And during “Piece of Me\,” Burt turns the sting of ending it into an anthem of wishful thinking alongside sashaying organs and rail-grinding guitar. Maybe one more chance is all he needs? “You like me better when I’m in pain\,” he sings slyly. “Well\, baby\, just look at me now.” Amid these warped jewels of psychedelic soul\, you’ll find yourself pulling for Burt\, hoping the world can come to its senses on his behalf. \nBurt first earned notice for his imaginative and trenchant social protest songs\, where he’d capture some corrosive element of American life—unchecked capitalism\, unwavering racism\, so on—in a compelling snapshot. Traffic Fiction isn’t that kind of album\, necessarily\, though his defiance hasn’t disappeared. Referencing his ancestral homeland of Promised Land\, South Carolina\, “All Things Right” scorns apathy and bureaucracy\, the way we strand each other via our own pursuits. “I’ll never be free/but I can pretend\,” he snaps with verve during the verse of “Kids in the Yard\,” a mighty theme of self-empowerment. Burt finds the joy even here\, pushing past problems rather than succumbing to obstacles. \nAnd isn’t that a crucial role of music\, especially now—to show us how to handle our burdens with aplomb and vision\, to model the behavior of persevering with élan? At three points during Traffic Fiction\, Burt interweaves bits of those recorded conversations with his late grandfather\, Tommy. They talk about Stevie Wonder\, Burt’s career and the fatigue it can bring\, and\, finally\, the sense that he’s carrying on a family tradition through these records. It’s a reminder not only of what Burt experienced while making Traffic Fiction but also of what he overcame. He found strength in the soul of his youth\, and\, for that\, he’s never sounded stronger.

SUMMARY:Bay Ledges\, DLG
DESCRIPTION:Bay Ledges is the project of Maine-born and based musician Zach Hurd. Inspired by a\nbi-coastal existence\, he released his debut album\, Ritual\, a 13-song record written\,\nproduced\, and mixed entirely by Hurd in 2022. Exploring transience\, nostalgia\, and\nHurd’s own relationship to music and art\, it’s a meditative record that’s both psychedelic and thrilling. Hurd started Bay Ledges in 2015 in his bedroom shortly after moving to Los Angeles\, where he stayed until 2020 when he moved back to his small hometown in coastal Maine.\nThe project initially took off when Hurd’s 2016 single\, “Safe\,” jumped to the\nnumber three spot on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart. Since releasing Ritual\, he has\ngarnered more than 115 million streams worldwide and received praise from the likes of Billboard\, Under The Radar\, and Flood.\nBay Ledges has toured all over the US and Canada\, sharing the stage with such acts as Yoke Lore\, Magic City Hippies\, and The Palms and selling out headline shows at iconic venues like the Troubadour in LA and Schubas in Chicago. 2023 will see him supporting artists like Big Wild\, Goth Babe\, and Trevor Hall in addition to festivals and a headline tour.\nHe is currently working on new music.

SUMMARY:THE LOX w/ wins\, E&J (Eleven & Jason D)\, TNY
DESCRIPTION:Within only a few years during the late ’90s and the following decade\, veteran rap group the LOX were factors in the commercial dominance of Bad Boy and the ascent of Ruff Ryders. After the hard-hitting trio from Yonkers established themselves with a good amount of supporting collaborative work\, they cashed in with their Top Ten debut\, Money\, Power & Respect (1998)\, then made a better stylistic fit with Ruff Ryders\, where they issued another Top Ten hit with We Are the Streets (2000). MCs Styles P\, Jadakiss\, and Sheek Louch then went solo with across-the-board commercial success\, and in the process became one of few groups with a Top Ten entry on the Billboard 200 from each member. Years after achieving the feat\, the LOX resumed recording together with the Trinity series and the albums Filthy America…It’s Beautiful (2016) and Living Off Xperience (2020)\, all issued through the self-operated D-Block label. \nStyles P (David Styles)\, Jadakiss (Jason Phillips)\, and Sheek Louch (Sean Jacobs) rapped together in high school under the name the Bomb Squad (not to be confused with Public Enemy‘s production team) and eventually became known as the Warlocks. A demo they recorded with Jaz-O won over fellow Yonkers native Mary J. Blige\, and consequently Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs\, who signed the group to Bad Boy Entertainment. After the trio had their name shortened by Combs to the LOX — eventually acronymic for Living Off Experience — they achieved a commercial breakthrough in 1997. They contributed “We’ll Always Love Big Poppa” to the maxi-single edition of Puff Daddy’s chart-topping “I’ll Be Missing You\,” and were featured on a slew of tracks highlighted by the remix of Puff’s “All About the Benjamins” and the Bad Boy remix of Mariah Carey‘s “Honey\,” which were likewise among that year’s biggest pop hits. \nAll of that activity primed the LOX for the release of their debut full-length. Money\, Power & Respect was issued in January 1998. Highly anticipated\, the album entered the Billboard 200 at number three and produced Top 40 singles with “If You Think I’m Jiggy” and the title track\, the latter of which\, featuring Lil’ Kim and DMX\, also topped the rap chart. Even though the group thrived with Bad Boy\, they opted to then consolidate their affiliation with Ruff Ryders\, a management and label enterprise with a tougher\, more compatible image. The trio returned on Ruff Ryders in January 2000 with We Are the Streets. Produced almost exclusively by RR linchpin Swizz Beatz\, it debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. The biggest single was “Ryde or Die\, B****\,” a collaboration with Timbaland\, Eve\, and Drag-On. \nEach member of the LOX soon established a solo career and focused on work outside the group. Rather impressively\, Jadakiss‘ Kiss tha Game Goodbye\, Styles’ A Gangster and a Gentleman\, and Sheek‘s Walk witt Me\, constituting the first wave of solo LOX releases\, all placed within the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 from 2001 through 2003. Under the name D-Block\, the three MCs reconvened to put together the 2009 compilation No Security\, a platform for themselves and developing artists on the D-Block label. During 2013 and 2014\, they released the LOX EPs The Trinity and The Trinity: 2nd Sermon\, along with The Trinity: 3rd Sermon\, a mixtape. Their first proper album in 16 years\, Filthy America…It’s Beautiful\, arrived in 2016 with DJ Premier\, Pete Rock\, and Dame Grease among the producers. The joint D-Block/Roc Nation release reached number 42 on the Billboard 200. In 2020\, they inched toward album four\, Living Off Xperience\, with the singles “Loyalty and Love” and “Gave It to ‘Em.” ~ Andy Kellman \n\n\n\n \n\nwins\nwins\, an alternative hip-hop/R&B/soul artist based in Boise\, Idaho\, has been making subtle waves since the reemergence of his solo artist journey fall 2023. wins is looking to inspire anyone that listens with his authentic delivery & real life perspectives through his music. With the release of his recent single “been different”\, along with more music on the way monthly\, wins is quickly establishing his presence in the music scene as a melodic & relatable high level lyricist. \n\n\n \n\nE&J (Eleven & Jason D)\nEleven & Jason D (aka E&J) are a Boise\, Idaho based MC & DJ group. Heavily influenced by 80’s & 90’s Hip Hop\, the crew is known for bringing a live show and that raw Boom Bap sound to the stage. The duo released their “Strike Back” album in 2020 with critical acclaim and spins around the globe. European based Hip Hop Golden Age blog called it one of the best Hip Hop albums of the year. In 2021 & 2022\, the crew released a series of singles\, including “One Of One featuring REKS”\, leading up to the December 2022 release of their 4th album “Carefully Crafted”. The singles have been featured on SiriusXM Eminem’s Shade 45 and are staples of underground Hip Hop radio shows\, blogs\, and playlists around the world. \n\n\n \n\nTNYG\n𝘛𝘕𝘠𝘎 is an American rapper\, songwriter\, and producer whose style-bending music is an impactful presence. \nReleasing his first studio album\, “The Balance II” (TBII) exclusively found on his website and by physical CD. \nHis journey wasn’t paved with gold\, but that didn’t matter. He made the best of it\, and his parents did what they could. \nHe expressed interest in the creative arts at an early age. Like many musicians before him\, music became his oasis.A place he could focus on while the world around him experienced valley lows. \nRecession\, violence\, divorce. He could create and live in his own world\, one filled with Mountain highs. \nFreedom\, abundance\, and self-exploration For TNYG\, music is both the shield and the sword\, \nan anchor and a pair of wings\, and finally – a voice.

SUMMARY:ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES
DESCRIPTION:ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES – ¡BLOW IT…AT MADISON’S\nQUINCEAÑERA! Twenty years after Me First and the Gimme\nGimmes ruined Johnny’s Bar Mitzvah\, punk rock’s premier cover band is back to\nwreak havoc on another important coming-of-age ceremony. This time\, as the\nalbum title reveals\, it was a Quinceañera. Nobody attending had ever heard\nof Me First and the Gimme Gimmes before\, and nobody knew what to expect.\n“It was really tense for me going out to no applause—and to people actually\nwalking away when we were playing\,” says frontman Spike Slawson. “A\nQuinceañera is a very celebrated and important event\, not just in a young girl’s\nlife\, but in the whole families. Mom and Dad were great\, but it took the uncles a\nlittle while to warm up to me and our off-color jokes\, though I think eventually\nthey got it. Our process is to cast the line out and bring people to the point of—\nand beyond—outward expressions of displeasure like booing\, and then\nhopefully reel them back in by the end of the set.”\nDoes that kind of make Me First and the Gimme Gimmes—especially on this\nrecord—the Andy Kaufman of punk rock? Possibly. But you don’t have to be in\non the joke to enjoy this album. Nor do you have to be a sadist (but it wouldn’t\nhurt) to enjoy the one person politely clapping after Slawson introduces\n“Changes” at the beginning of the first of the band’s two sets. “This is a Black\nSabbath song\,” he says. “If you know it\, feel free to sing along.” Nobody does.\nBut he interpolates birthday girl\, Madison’s\, name into the song\, and as the\nband speeds things up a little later\, you can feel that heavy\, early tension\ndissipate a very tiny bit. When he speaks to her at the start of “Dancing Queen\,”\nthings loosen up a little bit more—though you could still cut the air with a\ncumpleaños cake-sized knife—and there are even a few cheers after the band\nsings “Happy Birthday.” The turning point\, however\, has to be the wonderfully\nSNAFU’d cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U”\, which is a work of art in and of\nitself\, regardless of context. And while it might not have gotten the exact same\nreception the popstar herself gets in arenas; it’s still followed by enthusiastic\nscreams. What’s more\, as it’s wont to do\, the band even manages to include a\nnod to a punk classic at the start\, in the shape of “Ever Fallen In Love.”\n“We just thought it was too perfect\,” remembers Slawson. “Nobody in the place\nknew who the Buzzcocks were or cared what the intro was or anything\, so it\nwas kind of lost on them\, but that moment in the set I think was when the\ncrowd was finally fully on our side. We had them eating out of the palm of our\nhands at that point\, which was a good feeling because it was touch and go until\nthen. But with that song we finally played something from this millennium.”\nRecorded on July 15th\, 2023\, at The Soap Factory in San Diego\, on this live\nouting\, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes were completed by Joey Cape on\nguitar\, CJ Ramone on bass\, Swami John Reis on guitar\, and Andrew “Pinch”\nPinching on drums—a veritable punk rock supergroup\, as ever\, not that anyone\nat the Quinceañera knew or cared. However\, they also had a horn section for\nthe first time\, courtesy of Keith Douglas and Jason Crane. Swami John Reis’\nfather\, John Reis Sr.\, even played accordion on the penultimate song\, “Before\nthe Next Teardrop Falls\,” the track made famous in 1975 by Freddy Fender. It\nall comes together to create a performance that rises (even as it’s sinking) to\nthe occasion. It would have been so easy for the band to play to a crowd who\nalready knew and loved them\, but that’s not the Gimme Gimmes way. Besides\,\nyou get more sense of what the band is like live listening to this than you ever\ncould from a slick performance in front of an adoring audience. For Slawson\,\nthat redemption arc is precisely the point.\n“I would like this to be considered indicative of what a live show by the Gimme\nGimmes can be\,” he says. “The only difference is that there would be people\nthat wanted to hear us specifically and came to see us. What happened at this\nshow\, to me\, is better than unfettered\, unconditional applause from a lot of\npeople. Golf-claps from about five people is how I want to hear a live record.\nIt’s funny\, and it doesn’t stop being funny. Not only do outward displays of\ndisapproval not scare me\, but I might even crave them a little bit. I don’t\nnecessarily want to leave with people booing\, but fawning praise makes me\ncringe. The girl had a good time\, her mom and dad had a good time\, her abuelo\nhad a good time. And then when the DJ music finally played\, her friends had a\ngood time\, too.” \n\n\n\n \n\nThe Schizophonics\nOver the last few years\, THE SCHIZOPHONICS have built up a formidable reputation around the world as an explosive live act. Tapping into the same unstoppable combination of rock ‘n’ roll energy and showmanship that fueled THE MC5 in the heyday of the Grande Ballroom\, their wild live show is heavily influenced by artists like JAMES BROWN\, IGGY POP\, JIMI HENDRIX\, LITTLE RICHARD\, and THE SONICS. Singer/guitarist Pat Beers and drummer Lety Beers formed the band in San Diego in 2009 and have worked tirelessly since then\, playing hundreds of shows around the globe. In 2013 they were recruited as the backing/opening band for EL VEZ\, which helped the band make a name for itself in Europe. Since then\, they’ve played in numerous countries\, and supported tours by like-minded acts like ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT\, LITTLE BARRIE\, THE WOGGLES and have opened for the DAMNED\, DEVO\, HIVES and CAGE THE ELEPHANT. Shindig magazine described their live show “Like watching some insane hybrid of WAYNE KRAMER\, JAMES BROWN\, and the Tazmanian Devil”. \nThe band is more than just a live act\, they’re also committed to writing great memorable songs. Their new album in due in the fall of 2022 along with extensive tour dates. The Schizophonics- hailed by Spotify as the “wildest live band in America” – wouldn’t want it any other way. \n\n\n \n\nStill Animals\nShaped of Mississippi river mud and basement limestone\, Still Animals are familiar faces from the St. Louis underground punk/HC scene. Vocalist Lee and drummer Francis have been longtime fixtures at basement gigs\, the skatepark\, and the hardware store\, but never started a band – and approach music with all the joy\, rage\, and slop you’d expect from something new. Jessie (Nasty Cat Bath\, Dada Gun) and Gabe (Lumpy & the Dumpers\, Ace of Spit\, Fried E/M) keep the strings on the rails while Lee howls love songs and attacks techno-fascism and big money with the unhinged conviction of David Peel and Doc Dart. \n\n\n \n\nDJ Thirst n Howl\nSeattle area show spinner.\nDropper of needles\, fumbler of beats\, purveyor of questionable taste.\nOdds and sods\, bits and bobs.\nMake mine a Fernet.
