SUMMARY:An Evening With David Sedaris
DESCRIPTION:David Sedaris\, author of the previous bestsellers Calypso\, Naked\, Me Talk Pretty One Day\, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim and regular National Public Radio contributor will be appearing for one night only at The Egyptian Theatre on Sunday\, May 10\, 2026 at 4:00 PM\, following the release of his newest books\, A Carnival of Snackery and Pretty Ugly.\nThis is a unique opportunity to see the best-selling humorist in an intimate setting. As always\, Sedaris will be offering a selection of all-new readings and recollections\, as well as a Q&A session and book signing. Books will be available for sale at the event\, courtesy of Rediscovered Books.\nWith sardonic wit and incisive social critiques\, Mr. Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.\nIf you love David Sedaris’s cheerfully misanthropic stories\, you might think you know what you’re getting into at his live readings. You’d be wrong. To see him read his own work on stage allows his autobiographical narrative to reveal a uniquely personal narrative that will keep you laughing throughout the evening. Don’t miss this event! As always\, the reading will be accompanied by a pre and post-show book signing.

SUMMARY:Snail Mail w/ Sharp Pins\, Armlock
DESCRIPTION:On Ricochet\, her third album as Snail Mail\, Lindsey Jordan returns to assert herself as a generational songwriter\, clear-eyed and honest as ever. Time has passed\, but she remains a sensitive soul\, and here her incisive introspection is tethered to newly expansive and hypnotic melodies and ornate string arrangements. While writing Ricochet\, Jordan found herself fixating on concerns she’d previously pushed out of her mind\, namely death and what happens after. These 11 songs are colored by the anxiety of watching life slip through your fingers\, as well as the vulnerability of loving deeply rather than frenetically. Ultimately\, Ricochet is an album about realizing—and accepting—that the world still turns no matter what is going on in your tiny life. \nRicochet is the first Snail Mail album in five years\, and a lot has happened in the interim. Before touring 2021’s Valentine around the world\, Jordan had surgery for vocal polyps. She underwent intensive speech therapy and emerged as a more confident vocalist—on Ricochet\, Jordan wields newfound control over her voice\, ironically enough for an album about uncertainty. She made her acting debut in Jane Schoenbrun’s indie horror I Saw the TV Glow\, playing a Buffy-esque heroine with psychic powers. She moved out of New York\, floated around for a bit\, and landed in the area around Greensboro\, North Carolina. She’s 26 and has a fluffy white puffball of a dog\, whom she holds up to the night sky so she can see the stars. \nAll the while\, Jordan was working on new music. She tried to write quickly—“which obviously didn’t work”—but with intention\, aiming not to leave any material on the cutting room floor. “I’ve never done this before\, but I wrote all of the instrumentals and vocal melodies on the piano or guitar\, and then I filled in the lyrics all at once over a year\,” Jordan says. “It takes me a lot more time and consideration to make great melodies than it does trying to connect things lyrically\, so I gave myself more time to do the one.” \nWhen it came time to record the songs bouncing around in her head\, Jordan turned to a friend\, Aron Kobayashi Ritch\, the bassist and producer of the fuzzy indie rock band Momma. In winter 2025\, they made Ricochet at North Carolina’s Fidelitorium Recordings\, owned by R.E.M. producer Mitch Easter\, and the Nightfly and Studio G in Brooklyn. Jordan describes the process as refreshing\, trusting\, and comfortable. “I felt like an equal voice\,” she says. “He was as interested in my decisions as I was in his.” \nSonically\, Ricochet sounds like the natural next step in Snail Mail’s small but mighty discography\, building on the poised guitar parts of her 2018 Matador debut\, Lush\, and Valentine’s raw rock passion. Ricochet channels the Smashing Pumpkins at their sunniest and Radiohead at their most Britpop\, with notes of Catherine Wheel shoegaze\, Ivy power pop\, and Sunny Day Real Estate emo. These are welcoming and vibrant tones of the ambitious ’90s alt-rock variety\, embellished with unusual chords and curious textures that tickle the ear. (The most immediate and obvious descriptor is\, ahem\, lush.) \nJordan’s early music largely dealt with matters of the heart\, a territory that she tried to step beyond on Ricochet. “Misery feels safe to write about because I am good at it\,” she says\, “but I’m not bathing in my own agony anymore.” To feel the pain of everything and then nothing is a lonesome contradiction. Ricochet is a record about being caught in this whirlpool\, but Jordan’s music has never been so transcendent. The luminous opener\, “Tractor Beam\,” is driven by jangly guitars\, but is ultimately about dissociation and “feeling othered while acknowledging that you’re spending a lot of your time and energy figuring out how to float away.” \nWhile writing Ricochet\, Jordan found herself drawn to art that explores the concept of life itself. The questions of artistic worth\, ego\, alienation\, self-destruction\, and failure posed by Charlie Kaufman’s 2008 film Synecdoche\, New York cast a long-lasting existential shadow. “Nowhere” is informed by Laura Gilpin’s 1977 poem “The Two-Headed Calf\,” about a young animal whose congenital condition allows it to see twice as many stars (the gentle stuff just kills her). On “My Maker\,” she imagines flying a plane to heaven and overstaying her welcome at the airport bar. “Another year gone by\,” she laments atop swirling guitars and spaced-out sprawl. “What if nothing matters?” “Oh\, bouncer in the sky\,” she wearily pleads on another song. “Let me in\, I’m scared to die.” \nRicochet’s interiority reminds Jordan of Lush and other early music written in her Maryland childhood bedroom. “I was writing those songs for so long\, my whole life\,” she says. “It was my diary.” On the grunge-gaze song “Dead End\,” she mourns the simplicity of a suburban adolescence\, of parking in a cul-de-sac and smoking with friends. \n“I’ve aged out of thinking that you’ll have everybody forever. Many of these songs are about friendships\, friends that I’m sad about\,” Jordan says\, “But I’m also talking to myself.” “Looks like you made it/Somebody would be so proud\,” she sneers on “Hell.” “But you isolated/Alienate your friends/‘Cus they’re just a means to an end.” \n“Sometimes it’s devastating to be close with people. You’re busy during a birthday party. Then it happens again\,” Jordan says. “All of a sudden\, you haven’t talked to somebody you care about in years. You wake up one day and realize you’ve put yourself in a snowglobe\, and it’s cold and weird and plasticy.” \nTo this end\, emotional detachment can be self-imposed and involuntary\, a protective impulse and a clinical blunting. “Numb myself out/What else should we do?\,” Jordan sings on “Nowhere.” “You covered me all in kisses/I said I couldn’t feel it\, but I wanted to.” Slipping into the abyss can become a comforting guilty pleasure. “Fireworks going off from above/Lit up the sky like lightning bugs/Felt so alive then\, I can’t explain\,” she sings on “Cruise.” “Couldn’t wait to get home and hide my face/Couldn’t wait to get home and slip away.” \nRicochet’s cover is the first not to feature Jordan’s face. Instead\, a distressed deep blue expanse is filled by a spiral shell. A spiral moves in dual\, opposing directions. Inward winding suggests contraction to the point of disappearance\, while outward motion implies the promise of infinity. Distance and time may lead us away from the epicenter\, and growth may be uneven\, in fits and starts\, and maybe a few steps backwards. It’s easy to get tangled up in emotions along the way\, but every rotation offers the chance for pattern recognition\, for perspective\, for the realization that you do it to yourself\, that’s what really hurts. \n\n \n\nSharp Pins\nFall in Love again with Sharp Pins’ Balloon Balloon Balloon \nSometimes it all goes POP! \n  \nSharp Pins is the super solid lo-fi pop project of talented \nChicago musician Kai Slater of Lifeguard and Dwaal Troupe. \n“Youth Revolution Now” \n\n\n \n\nArmlock\nArmlock make music for having your head in the clouds. On their new album\, Seashell Angel Lucky Charm\, the Australian duo of Simon Lam and Hamish Mitchell take you through a steady ascension into heavenly sonic realms. The band’s second proper release\, and first for Run For Cover Records\, Seashell Angel Lucky Charm taps onto the songwriters’ roots in experimental electronic roots and filters them through an indie rock lens\, drawing the listener in close with crystal clear guitars\, tight rhythms\, warm harmonies\, and sparse arrangements that leave room for character and eccentricities. The result is an album of inventively minimal music that does a lot with a little.  \n Friends for 14 years\, Lam (vocals and guitar) and Mitchell (guitar and keyboards) have been in their fair share of musical projects together and apart. The two met studying jazz at Monash University in Melbourne\, eventually discovering a shared love of electronic music. After a handful of electronic and dance outlets (I’lls\, Couture\, Kllo) Armlock came together through the band’s natural camaraderie and comfort with collaboration\, and the two began incorporating guitar into the music they were making for the first time. Capable of recording and engineering the whole project themselves\, the pair never needed to be precious with studio time. Instead they preferred venturing down songwriting rabbit holes\, chasing down a feeling and layering ideas at their home studios\, unsure where a song would ultimately land. “There’s no real distinction between writing\, demoing\, and final production\, it’s all done at the same time\,” says Lam. “It’s a workflow that is much more common in electronic music and how we started making music together.” \nSeashell Angel Lucky Charm is the imaginative and sonically detailed result. The gentle vocals sit up front\, often buoyed by fragile guitar lines and a simple but steady beat\, and ample space is left for production flourishes like distant laughter\, chopped up samples\, and pitched squeals to ping around the listener’s ears. “We very much have a ‘throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks’ approach\,” explains Lam. “We focus a lot on how an element sounds\, rather than what an element is–if there’s a guitar part that’s not quite working\, rather than try a different guitar effect or amp sound\, we’re more likely to replace it with a keyboard\, or a sample. A ‘sound’ is just as important as a ‘part’ to us\, and I think that’s how a lot of electronic producers think.” \nEvery sound on Seashell Angel Lucky Charm feels precise and intentional\, making the earcandy choruses on tracks like “Fear” and “El Oh Ve Ee” feel like expertly placed moments of guitar pop bliss. These two songs show Armlock’s savvy with harmony as they use octaves of angelic sounds to stretch a simple one-word chorus until it soars with meaning. Throughout Seashell Angel Lucky Charm\, guitar is used sparingly and thoughtfully–more like a tool in Armlock’s belt rather than the primary songwriting vessel. On “Godsend” an airy acoustic provides the sturdy foundation\, ushering the groove forward with uncomplicated chord progressions and leaving the focus on Lam’s voice. \nArmlock’s sound at times recalls Pinback’s lean alternative\, Alex G’s adventurous indie\, or the wave of mysterious-yet-endearing genre-bending music coming out of the UK from label’s like Dean Blunt’s World Music or Vegyn’s PLZ Make It Ruins. Album opener “Ice Cold” provides a perfect entry point into Armlock’s world and their skill with coalescing disparate influences. One trap beat away from a Bladee track\, the song begins with robotic voices reminiscent of Boards of Canada and evolves into the meditative warmth found in Adrianne Lenker’s more lo-fi work. There’s a subdued tenderness to Lam’s vocal delivery as he ponders the loss of a friendship and introduces the album’s fixation on air signs and higher dimensions. \nLyrically\, Armlock’s music is often seeped with a very human desire to not only find guidance in the enormity of existence\, but also to find something deeper in the mundane. “I was brought up Catholic\, and I’ve definitely turned away from Christianity in my adult life but in recent years I’ve kind of missed that extra layer of meaning that religion adds to everyday life\,” Lam says. “I’ve never written songs about that kind of thing\, and it’s definitely pretty abstract\, but it’s interesting to write about something that isn’t in my physical life but still feels like I’m talking about something ‘real.’” \nAlbum highlight “Guardian” cuts to the heart of this theme with Lam looking “Somewhere up above” for “something or someone\,” sifting through everyday life\, trying to decide if the divine numbers he’s noticing on license plates are signs or happenstance. As guitar bends and piano rolls across the song’s structure until it fades into an airy soundscape where Lam yearns for a guardian through hushed vocals and chirping birds. “Ready for my essence to be found / ‘Cause I’m seeing their number all around / Guide me safe\, lead me from harm / My seashell angel lucky charm.” Elsewhere these more esoteric ideas intersect with romantic longing\, like on “El Oh Vee Ee” or “Godsend\,” the former an upbeat earworm and the latter a richly produced cut of creative guitar pop.  \nSeashell Angel Lucky Charm manages to walk a fine line: impressionistic yet accessible\, ambiguous yet refreshingly earnest. Armlock immerse you in their world but they don’t hold your hand\, allowing you to be the one to discover the melodies and ideas within. It’s an impressive feat for only 18 minutes of music and it will leave you searching for more–and luckily you can hit repeat right away.

SUMMARY:Ritt Momney w/ Mercury
DESCRIPTION:To make Base\, Jack Rutter (who performs as Ritt Momney) had to let go of everything. He had to get to the point where he wanted to quit making music. Tear everything down and build it all up again. Rutter had to let go of all the shoulds\, and all of the expectations he thought people had for him and his music. So he hit the reset button\, forgot about all the noise\, and made a record he truly wanted to make. It’s his most realized offering yet: beautiful and weird and cool. A record of lo-fi bedroom rock that radiates warmth and honesty.\nRutter’s story is one of reinventing yourself after viral success. After the release of his debut\, Her and All My Friends\, Rutter put out a cover of Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On.” The song was an unexpected hit\, taking off almost half a year after it was initially released\, and landing in the Billboard Hot 100. In 2021\, he released his second full-length record Sunny Boy\, a record of warm to the touch bedroom pop. And then Rutter started to fall out of love with music. “I was starting to feel like I was making music because I had to\,” he says\, “but then I realized\, I didn’t have to make anything if I didn’t want to.” This release from expectations was like a lightning bolt: Rutter felt a kind of freedom he had not felt in years. Enter Base.\nBase is Rutter’s third record. Since Sunny Boy\, he’s bought a house in his native Salt Lake City\, gotten married\, and started treating his hobbies with the same seriousness he treats his music (for a period of time\, he was bowling every morning of the week). In other words: he’s made a life for himself. A life where he has created the perfect environment to make music. Base is the product of this freedom. And you can tell from first listen. Base is a roomy\, elegant collection of songs.\n“I believe in base creativity\,” says Rutter\, “Some kind of pure being. A solid foundation.” This was the goal with Base: to make a record that is rooted in that sort of boundless creativity. To make it\, Rutter joined up with his bandmates\, Rick West and Chris Peranich. On his past two records\, Rutter would write and produce everything. On Base\, he wanted things to be more collaborative. He wanted the record to have more of a live\, analog sound. Base was recorded on an 8-track. No screens allowed in the studio during the initial recording. They’d use computers a little bit after the fact\, but the goal was to make something that sounded organic.\nLike “Gunna\,” a song about waiting and not knowing what you’re waiting for. The song starts out with acoustic guitars\, then Rutter’s voice comes in. “As soon as she gets home\,” he sings\, “I’m going to be so nice.” There’s a little distortion\, cracking open the song like you do with an egg and a fork. Keys and big drums. It’s a little Radiohead\, a little Alex G. \nBase is a record of intuitive music. For Rutter\, that often meant writing what he knew best. Like “The Tank\,” which is about the Utah Jazz. Rutter became obsessed with the Jazz’s pursuit of the best draft picks via racking up losses. “There is no pressure when you’re doing terrible\,” he says\, “But there’s this abstract idea that you could be amazing again in the future.” “The Tank\,” is really about basketball. But it’s also about reinventing yourself\, getting all the way back to your base and then rising out of the ashes. “Blow it up for Cooper\,” sings Rutter in the song’s opening moments. There’s a melancholic quality to the song. But it’s also melancholic in a funny way. A lo-fi slacker anthem. That’s Base: a record about starting over and falling back in love with your art again. \n\n \n\nMercury\nFor mercury – the project architected by Maddie Kerr – songwriting is a form of survival\, a means of finding clarity in an often cruel world. Hailing from the rural outskirts of Franklin\, Tennessee\, music is everything she’s known dating back to the day 22 years ago when Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” blasted as she was born. \nThe artist’s latest three-track project comprised of “Born in Early May\,” “Special\,” and “Crick\,” was born from another kind of place; an especially difficult period of personal hardship. Accompanied by a monumental short film directed by Harrison Shook and set to be unleashed in June 2024\, this collection – titled “Together We Are One\, You And I\,” – wanders through the depths of human suffering and emerges resilient. Infinite black voids\, spiritual iconography\, and the scarlet glow of embers and flames define the three-part extended music-short film\, which follows Kerr and a cast of characters from all different walks of life: Through narrative vignettes\, contemporary dance\, and poetic abstractions\, these individuals are understood to be connected by grief\, pain\, and loss. \n“Born in Early May” was a personal breakthrough for Kerr\, the beginning of chipping through an emotional block. “It was the first time in a while I’ve allowed myself to put my emotions into words and to tell myself that it’s okay\, I’m allowed to be hurt\,” she says. Recorded in Asheville\, North Carolina with Alex Farrar (Wednesday\, Snail Mail\, Indigo de Souza)\, this trio of songs pushes Kerr’s fiery rock songwriting toward cathartic new heights and “Born in Early May” sets the stage for what’s to come. A thrashing opening track\, despairing images of ground-down teeth and a lecherous bird of prey are elevated by raw\, pummeling guitar and Kerr’s riveting vocals. \nThe second song of the trio\, “Special\,” opens with a scene of surrender: “Removed my clothes/The color left my face/Lowered my body into the water.” Nature and elemental wonder are recurring motifs for Kerr\, resonating deeply throughout the bones of mercury’s introductory singles “Woolgathering” and “Trying\,” which debuted late last year. In “Special\,” Kerr once again finds solace in underwater depths. “When I think about being in a dark place mentally\, it feels like I’m suspended in the deepest part of the ocean with nothing around me.” In this peaceful purgatory\, far from other people\, Kerr nurses her wounds and admits a universal human desire atop sparse ambiance: “I wanna be something to you/I wanna be special too.” \nIf “Born in Early May” looks outward\, “Crick” directs its gaze inward for the finale of “Together We Are One\, You And I.” “When I was writing ‘Crick’ I was angry at myself for not being able to say what I meant in moments where I really needed to\,” Kerr says. “I was angry at other people for not giving me the opportunity to speak for myself\, but part of that was because I had waited too long to get my own words together.” Mounted with towers of guitars\, the song hurtles toward a tremendously grungy conclusion that acts as a reminder: sometimes noise can convey an inner chaos beyond words. \nIt’s a sense of self-reflection\, and subsequent relinquishing to the cascading waves of adversity that come into focus as we grow older. “Writing these songs has been part of a journey of figuring out my emotions and telling myself that it’s okay to feel that way\, to talk about it\, to write about it\,” Kerr says. \nHaving made early noise with last year’s releases of “Trying” and “Woolgathering” – which seized the attention of Nylon\, Paste Magazine\, Under The Radar\, Billboard and FLOODFM\, while landing on numerous playlists across Spotify & Apple – the full force of Kerr is now ready to rear its head. mercury’s latest tracks are like hands reaching out through the darkness\, offering companionship on your own journey through despair.

SUMMARY:Alex G w/ Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Alex G\, stage alias of Alex Giannascoli\, is a prolific singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist who built his reputation combining strong melodic sensibilities with a ragged\, impulsive-sounding performance style. Regarded as one of the most influential artists of his generation\, the release of Alex G’s ninth studio album in 2022\, God Save the Animals\, was met with critical acclaim across the board\, hailed as “a tour de force” (Rolling Stone) and “his most thrilling and playful record yet” (Vanity Fair).\nMost recently\, Alex composed the original score for the A24 film I Saw The TV Glow\, continuing his work with director Jane Schoenbrun\, who he previously collaborated with on the 2021 film We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. In 2024\, Alex announced his signing to RCA Records. \nAlex G has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 per ticket goes to supporting local nonprofit organizations providing critical services to young people\, including housing and stability services\, access to education\, and mental health care. \n\n \n\nAgriculture\nAgriculture is a Los Angeles–based band channeling ecstatic black metal into something spiritual\, grounded\, and definitely present. Emerging from the city’s noise scene\, the band coalesced into its current form with Dan Meyer\, Leah Levinson\, Richard Chowenhill\, and Kern Haug. Their music fuses the searing intensity of black metal with Zen Buddhist thought\, queer history\, and devotional songwriting. The result is a sound that resists algorithmic flattening and demands full attention. Their process is rooted in community and persistence: songs are written\, dismantled\, and rebuilt together. The Spiritual Sound\, their new full-length\, builds on the radiant extremity of their previous releases and pushes further: music not for escapism\, but for confrontation and catharsis. This is not a vibe. It’s a demand.

SUMMARY:Emo Nite
DESCRIPTION:Emo Nite is a late-night dance party in Boise celebrating the emo and pop-punk songs that defined a generation. Expect wall-to-wall anthems\, nostalgic throwbacks\, and a crowd singing every word at the top of their lungs. It’s loud\, emotional\, and all about reliving the music that never really left us. \nNot a band. Not DJ’s. We throw parties for the music we love. \nAs Rolling Stone observed a few years ago\, “Emo Nite Vindicated the Scene.” \nSince they threw their first party at an East L.A. dive bar\, Morgan Freed and T.J. Petracca\, and a dedicated crew of regular attendees\, built Emo Nite into a phenomenon. Top-tier emo artists\, old and new\, curate playlists and perform\, with guest lists boasting members of blink-182\, All Time Low\, Dashboard Confessional\, The Maine\, and Good Charlotte. Scene-friendly pop culture mavericks often participate\, like past attendees Post Malone\, Demi Lovato\, Machine Gun Kelly\, and Skrillex. \nIt’s all too easy to forget that before the first Emo Nite in December 2014\, “emo” was a joke. \nSomehow on its journey from a melodic post-hardcore subgenre\, built on earnest emotional expression\, to a mainstream moniker assigned to anything remotely angsty\, “emo” became a dirty word. Despite the positive impact ushered in by waves of bands\, from the crucial “Revolution Summer” and Sunny Day Real Estate through Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance\, accepting “emo” as a dismissive designation or identity invited polite embarrassment and even scorn. \nBut Freed and Petracca grew up loving the music associated with emo and the people like them who similarly embraced outsider art and subculture\, regardless of changing fashions or pretentious snobbery. Petracca told The New Yorker the idea behind the first Emo Nite celebration was to center a happy\, communal experience on the music they once listened to when they were upset and alone. \n“I sang Dashboard Confessional at karaoke at a friend’s birthday party and thought it was super fun to go out with friends and listen to music we actually liked\,” recalls Petracca\, who met Freed when the pair worked at a creative agency together. “Every other club in LA played EDM\, Top 40\, or hip-hop. We always found ourselves pre-gaming with emo and pop-punk music before we went out.” \nFreed knew a bartender at the Short Stop in Echo Park and convinced him to let them throw a party on a random\, rainy Tuesday. They invited friends via Facebook; double the bar’s capacity turned up. “We decided to see how far we could take it\,” Petracca says. “‘Who would be the craziest guest?’ We invited Mark Hoppus\, and he came! He did our first one at Echoplex\, which was our third party ever.” \n“There’s no disconnect between the artist and fan\,” Freed points out. “I think that’s brought people closer to the music. It created a really strong sense of community\, at a time when emo wasn’t ‘cool.’” \nThere may be a surprise acoustic set or even a full-band performance\, but ultimately\, it’s about the experience. Emo Nite turned a party into a community\, reclaiming the spirit of how the scene began. \nIt’s now a recurring event thrown by dozens of friends in over 30 cities in the United States. Emo Nite runs full-day festivals and curates coveted performance spots at Coachella\, Life is Beautiful\, and Firefly. Freed and Petracca launched successful clothing collaborations with brands like OBEY\, Urban Outfitters\, PLEASURES\, The Hundreds\, Rose in Good Faith\, Market\, and OWSLA. \n“A larger promoter told us the shelf life of a club night in Los Angeles was two years\,” Freed says\, marveling at Emo Nite’s staying power. “A hundred percent of it is the people that go to it. This music makes people feel connected. The energy of it is so special. You get a group of people together who look different\, but they have this thing in common. We started seeing friend groups form really\, really quickly. People met their significant others at these events. The community really trusts each other.” \n“Emo Nite LA has become an essential gathering point for fans of emo\, pop-punk\, and related styles\,” Rolling Stone noted. \nIn October 2021\, Emo Nite’s founders threw Emo Nite Vegas Vacation\, a three-day event headlined by Avril Lavigne and Machine Gun Kelly\, with Sleeping With Sirens\, MOD SUN\, 3OH!3\, and more. \n“What Emo Nite does better than any of their competitors is they make ‘emo culture’ feel both nostalgic and brand new\,” The Summer Set’s Brian Logan Dales told Forbes\, in a profile which included professions of love from members of Papa Roach\, Underoath\, and State Champs. “You can go to an Emo Nite with your best friends and sing along to old songs you grew up with\, and at the same time\, discover a brand-new artist who’s making music today because they grew up on that very same music as you. They’ve taken the emo of the past and helped it forge a new path for the future.” \nAs emo reenters popular culture with a blend of adoring nostalgia and optimistic forward- thinking\, Emo Nite remains an authentic space to celebrate diversity\, experience passionate catharsis\, and champion authentic expression. Emo Nite isn’t a band or a DJ crew. It’s an idea\, one as simple as the urge to throw a party for a beloved style of music. Often imitated but never truly duplicated\, Emo Nite’s founders and supporters are fond of saying\, “If you don’t see the grave\, it ain’t our rave.” \n“There’s a lot of ownership from our community of the event itself and the Emo Nite brand\,” Petracca says. “It’s about breaking down that barrier of ‘Look at me\, it’s all about me.’ No\, it’s about us\, together\, in this room. It belongs to every single person that comes through the door.”\nThe co-founders continue to look ahead. “Emo Nite definitely impacted culture\,” Freed notes. “But we have no plans to stop changing the way we view the evolution and expansion of the genre.”

SUMMARY:American Football w/ Mei Semones
DESCRIPTION:Before attaining global recognition as a defining pillar of the “Midwest Emo” sub-genre\, American Football was a humble University of Illinois-based indie rock band led by Mike Kinsella (founding Cap’n Jazz drummer-turned- vocalist-and-guitarist) along with Steve Holmes (guitar) and Steve Lamos (drums /\ntrumpet). They were influenced at the time by artists including Steve Reich\, Tortoise\, and The Sea and Cake.\nTogether\, American Football would play no more than a dozen sparsely attended shows before going their separate ways. With college graduation and some variation of adulthood looming\, the band’s parting gift would be shared in the form of a self-titled album\, released in September of 1999 via the locally founded Polyvinyl Record Co. What would transpire over the ensuing fifteen years\, however\, is something made of rock and roll legend – where word of mouth meets message boards\, and mixtapes\, burned CDs\, and early file sharing platforms allowed for the lore of an otherwise unknown band\, with a nondescript house on their lone album cover\, to grow into something much larger.\nIn 2014\, answering the call from a growing legion of dedicated fans\, American Football would reunite to\ninternational acclaim. With the addition of bassist/multi-instrumentalist and cousin Nate Kinsella\, the\nquartet has since released two additional (and equally beloved) self-titled records in 2016 and 2019\, while\nsteering a natural evolution in their evergreen sound towards post-rock\, post-punk\, and more\nexperimental influences. They’ve collaborated with admired peers and fans alike\, including Paramore’s\nHayley Williams\, Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell\, and Ethel Cain\, among others. The band has been touted\namong the most important artists of their class by the likes of Alternative Press\, The FADER\, GQ\, The\nGuardian\, NME\, NPR Music\, KEXP\, Vulture\, Rolling Stone\, and elsewhere.\nHailed as the “most influential album in the genre” by Pitchfork\, American Football spent the last two\nyears honoring its 25th anniversary of their self-titled debut – colloquially known as “LP1\,” by embarking\non a sold out world tour. In the process\, they shared a remastered edition of the landmark record\,\ncompiled an LP1 covers album by artists of mutual inspiration\, put out their first live album\, and released\na companion concert film of its recording.\nHaving recently ventured into parts of the globe for the first time\, the band has also found an\noverwhelming embrace among a new generation of fans. Many of these fans have never been to the\nAmerican Midwest\, yet have all felt that same emotional connection to its vast geography and rich\ncreative soil. As spring approaches in 2026\, so does new growth… \n\n \n\nMei Semones\nNo second-guessing\, no overthinking. The way I want to live my life is by doing the things that are important to me\, and I think everyone should live that way\,” says Mei Semones of her strengthened self-assurance. Through continuously honing in on her signature fusion of indie rock\, bossa nova\, jazz and chamber pop in a way that highlights her technical prowess on guitar\, the 24-year-old Brooklyn-based songwriter and guitarist is quickly establishing herself as an innovative musical force. Since the release of her acclaimed 2024 Kabutomushi EP\, a series of lushly orchestrated reflections on love in its many stages\, Mei has gone on to tour extensively across the US\, cultivate a dedicated following\, and write and record her highly anticipated debut album\, Animaru. Inspired by the Japanese pronunciation of the word “animal” in Japanese\, Animaru is the embodiment of Mei’s deeper trust in her instincts – a collection of musically impressive tracks that see Mei sounding more adventurous\, more vulnerable and more confident than ever before.\nMei’s newfound assertiveness comes in part from her experiences in the past year\, as 2024 was a transformative year for the Mei Semones band. They shared bills with the likes of Liana Flores\, Elephant Gym and Kara Jackson\, among others\, and Mei transitioned to doing music full-time. Amidst the frequent touring\, Mei and her five-piece band recorded the album in the summer of 2024 at Ashlawn Recording Company\, a farm studio in Connecticut operated by their friend Charles Dahlke. To these sessions\, she brought a batch of tracks that\, not unlike Kabutomushi\, are sophisticated declarations of non-romantic love: love of life (“Dumb Feeling”)\, love of family (“Zarigani”)\, love of music and her guitar (“Tora Moyo”). Animaru exemplifies Mei’s enchantingly wide range as a songwriter and musician\, including some of the most challenging and most straightforward songs Mei has ever written.\nThough her music might inherently evoke feelings of romance and softness\, the crux of the album lies in Mei and her band’s skillful balance of tension and release. Often within individual tracks\, there will be moments of pared-back acoustic guitar adorned by Mei’s infectious vocalizations that\, in a moment’s notice\, transform into orchestral swells of sweeping strings and complex guitar rhythms. Album opener “Dumb Feeling” is a prime example\, a bossa/samba blend complete with indie rock sensibilities in the choruses as Mei details her contentment with her life in New York City. Mei actively seeks out musical challenges throughout Animaru\, like on “I can do what I want\,” the album’s most technically ambitious track. But she still manages to make the quickly cascading guitar harmonics and odd meters sound like a breeze to play\, her breathy\, lilting voice cutting through the track’s energetic dynamics. It epitomizes the album as a whole – she sings of doing things her own way\, on her own terms\, in hopes of inspiring others to make the same active switch in their own lives.\nThe simpler moments on Animaru are equally as captivating as when Mei is shredding on guitar or her bandmates are carrying out an intricate arrangement. “Donguri\,” a stripped-down jazz duo performance between acoustic guitar and upright bass\, is the simplest song Mei has ever written\, brought to life by Mei sweetly chronicling (mostly in Japanese) what she imagines life would be like as a woodland creature living in the forest. The album’s penultimate track also encompasses themes relating to the titular “animaru.” Translating to “crayfish\,” the bright\, effervescent “Zarigani” is a nostalgic expression of love for her twin sister\, with Mei singing “We’ll always have each other / I love you like my guitar / I love you like no other.” Family is one of the primary loves of Mei’s life\, with her mom\, Seiko Semones\, making all of her album and single artwork. Despite Animaru being a statement of Mei’s autonomy and confidence at this\npoint in her life\, it’s the various loves that she surrounds herself with – her family\, her friends\, her band\, her music – that empower her to do things her own way.\nAnimaru\, the debut album by Mei Semones\, is out on May 2\, 2025\, on Bayonet Records.
