SUMMARY:Pup w/ Chase Petra
DESCRIPTION:It seems significant that there were bats in the mansion’s attic\, although how significant it seems will have something to do with how you feel and what you know about PUP. None of it is a metaphor\, and also all of it is. \nThe mansion\, for its part\, is very real—it is a sprawling residence-slash-studio in Connecticut’s most dispiriting mid-sized city where the producer Peter Katis has helped acts like The National and Interpol and Frightened Rabbit and Kurt Vile make records. There are gold records on the walls and warrens of strange new rooms that the band members discovered seemingly daily; the roof leaks when it rains\, and the bats reclaim the attic after dark. PUP singer Stefan Babcock recorded all his vocals in the living room\, at night. “The other guys were just trying to live their lives\,” he said\, “and Nestor and I would be down there screaming into microphones while they were watching TV in the next room.” Babcock remembered Katis telling him that the bats “go away” during the daytime hours. “I was like\, ‘no\, they’re sleeping\,’” Babcock said. “They don’t go anywhere\, there’s nowhere for them to go.’” \nThe band spent five weeks there in the summer of 2021\, recording and mixing the typically furious and anthemic songs that would become their fourth album\, THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND. The band—Babcock\, bassist Nestor Chumak\, drummer Zack Mykula\, and guitarist Steve Sladkowski—more or less never left. “There were some days that were really great\, like magical\, everything worked and then we’d go to the kitchen and make a great meal\,” Sladkowski said\, “and then there were days when you’re like ‘I can’t remember the last time I’ve been outside.’” Circumstances—a global pandemic\, still happening\, not much fun to talk about and won’t be addressed further here—made cultivating a healthy\, communal vibe more difficult\, but the band powered through by having friends like Sarah from Illuminati Hotties\, Kathryn from NOBRO\, Mel from Casper Skulls\, and Erik from Remo Drive pitch in. When the band got comfortable in its strange new home\, the (figurative) walls came down. “As the weeks passed\, we seemed less and less rational\, objective\, and sane\,” Babcock says. “You can hear the band start to fall off the cliff\, and because of that\, I think this record is our truest and most genuine to date. There is nothing more PUP than a slow and inevitable descent into self-destruction.” \nEvery PUP record arrives with an implied “contents under pressure” warning; the tension between the band’s instinct for the melodic and its gift for chaos propels the songs forward while making them also seem close to flying apart in a horrifying spray of tears and gore. To listen to PUP enough is to spend parts of every day mentally echoing some hilariously self-lacerating\, utterly undeniable choruses; you will find yourself thinking “this is the mosh part” at moments when you would otherwise be tearing yourself apart. It is one thing to feel\, as Babcock sings on THE UNRAVELING’s “Totally Fine\,” “like I’m slowly dying/and if I’m being real I don’t even mind\,” but it is another\, very different thing to find yourself shouting along with those words. There’s a tension here\, too. “There’s only so many times you can write a song about how much you hate yourself before you write a song about how fucking good you are at hating yourself\,” Babcock says. “It’s funny that we’ve provided for ourselves by being fuck-ups and writing songs about being fuck-ups. We’ve been fuck-ups forever\, and now we’ve got a responsibility\, to others and to ourselves\, to fuck up in a productive manner.” \nThat’s not any easier than it sounds\, but also the volatility is the thing; all that tension is always just barely held in place by the band’s craft. It couldn’t be anything but uneasy\, but THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND is the sound of a band that is not just comfortable with but in command of that chaos. \nWe are back in the mansion\, now\, albeit the metaphorical one. PUP is objectively a very successful band. They won a Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year for 2019’s Morbid Stuff and have been nominated for the Polaris Prize and many nice things have been said about them in the places that people say nice things about bands; because they are PUP\, “nice things” in this case means Pitchfork saying that they “turn self-loathing and self-deprecation into a sort of superpower.” Fans happily sing the coruscating words of their songs aloud in sold-out venues all around the world; they did a version of arguably the harshest song on 2019’s Morbid Stuff for a 2020 CBC Kids Christmas special in which they replaced the lyric “embrace the calamity” with “embrace the festivities”; they have performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers\, and played at major festivals like Lollapalooza\, Boston Calling\, Shaky Knees\, and Riot Fest. A mansion is a place where such a band might go to record an ambitious fourth album. That success doesn’t haunt THE UNRAVELING\, although it does make it funnier; the “Four Chords” piano ballad threaded through the album tells the tale of a contentious quarterly meeting of PUP’s “board of directors” going selfishly awry. There is a long history of Mansion Albums; sometimes it works out well and sometimes it works out less well and more often than would seem plausible a Jaguar convertible winds up at the bottom of a swimming pool. \nPUP is not really that kind of band\, though\, and THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND is not that kind of record. It is still very much a PUP album\, but relocating from the literal basement where they wrote Morbid Stuff to the janky manse in which they put together its follow-up afforded the band space to grow\, and to make not just the next PUP record but the most PUP record. “This is a band that\, until this record\, out of some weird fucked up sense of misguided pride or idiocy\, felt that we should never use any instruments aside from drums\, bass\, and guitars\,” Babcock says. “We quickly came to realize that the instrumentation isn’t what makes PUP songs PUP. It’s the songs themselves\, finding this balance between heavy and melodic\, dark and fun\, pushing the limits of our writing chops and musicianship in a way that makes us laugh and also want to smash shit. So this record starts with the stupidest piano ballad of all time. And there are synths. And there are horns. And there are some 808s and trap hi-hats. And some other weird shit that we haven’t done before.” \nThere is no faking that\, which of course makes it all much harder to do. In the best PUP songs\, the whole process is not just visible but thrilling—the anguish and doubt that drives the songs is nurtured\, over a few loud minutes\, into something first legible and then somehow empowering. There are a lot of these songs on THE UNRAVELING. The alternately plaintive and anthemic “Matilda” is a classic galloping PUP shout-along recrimination-fest that sounds bigger than previous entries in this robust subgenre without losing any of the signature acid. “Waiting” is pure paint-stripping heat\, topped by some legitimately towering choruses. “Robot Writes A Love Song” dissolves into a wash of nervous synthesizer before becoming what is surely the most emotional song ever written from the perspective of a computer being overwhelmed unto death by actual human emotions. “I wanted to write about the horrible state of the world\, but through a very specific and personal lens\,” Babcock says. “It’s a lot of me trying to articulate my own coping with existential dread\, hopelessness\, and what I’ve called ‘Grim Reaping’—which is to me\, the idea that we are all reaping what we sow\, and right now we’re sowing some pretty fucked up shit.” \nTHE UNRAVELING is not a departure from what got PUP here\, really; for all the new breadth\, this is still very much the fourth album by the band that has spun songs about The Bad Decisions Lifestyle into scrappy art. The hooks are as bright and barbed as always; the poison threaded through every song is no less potent. But a fourth album should be different from the first\, or even the third\, and THE UNRAVELING is. “I don’t know that we set out to do new stuff\,” Mykula says\, of a record on which the band does a great deal of new stuff. “It’s just a band trying to sound as much like themselves as possible. Every record you make\, you get closer to that.” \nTHE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND is that next step—not towards perfection\, or even towards some more perfect version of writing songs about fucking up\, but just in the direction of its choice. It’s a product of this endless awful broader moment\, but also very much a step forward into that uncertainty. “The whole album process really brought us closer together\, even as things unraveled\,” Babcock says. “It’s hands down my favorite PUP record\, and I don’t think it could’ve been made under any other circumstances.” It’s the sound of a band learning how to share the mansion with the bats. \n\n \n\nChase Petra\nChase Petra’s music has always been about growth: growing up\, growing out\, growing tired of what others expect of you. On their sophomore album\, LULLABIES FOR DOGS\, the Long Beach\, CA trio once again elevates the existential questions that pepper life’s long\, unpredictable journey. \nAnd it’s their sense of figuring things out in real time that makes Chase Petra so relatable\, as the band’s “quarter-life-crisis pop” elevates deep introspection to navigate the messiness and confusion that comes with modern life. Their songs are guided by the age-old push-and-pull between what it means to grow up and be grown up\, to see your once-bright dreams dulled by the responsibilities of adulthood and grapple with the fallout.

SUMMARY:Circle Jerks\, The Adolescents\, Negative Approach
DESCRIPTION:Circle Jerks\n\n \n\nCircle Jerks emerged from the punk underbelly of LA’s South Bay in 1979. First conceptualized at “The Church” of Hermosa Beach\, the once infamous hangout of scene forefathers Black Flag\, Descendents\, Redd Kross\, and The Last\, the band quickly became the innovators of a movement simply referred to today as HARDCORE PUNK ROCK. \nAfter serving as a co-founder and lead vocalist of Black Flag during the recording of its essential Nervous Breakdown EP\, Keith Morris joined forces with former Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson to form what would become Circle Jerks\, a reference uncovered from artist Raymond Pettibon’s slang dictionary. Having written material for their former bands respectively\, Morris and Hetson\, along with bassist Roger Rogerson and jazz drummer Lucky Lehrer\, fine-tuned previously unfinished material to conceive the troupe’s now-renowned sound – thoughtfully steadfast\, yet relentless and ferocious in nature. Unlike much of the unapologetic hardcore that seeped through the cracks of American suburbia\, the music of the Circle Jerks was dynamic\, deliberate\, and most importantly\, a force to be reckoned with. Bringing together a potent\, articulate rhythm section with earnest yet oftentimes derisive lyrics and themes\, the band was thereafter heralded as a leader of the pack\, but with no real plan in sight. \nThe social climate of Los Angeles in the early eighties was marked by unsettled fluidity\, with the expansion of hardcore punk that infiltrated the public eye. The “pogo” of a former generation became the “slam dance” of another – a moniker consecrated in the iconic Circle Jerks “Skanking Kid” logo designed by graphic designer Shawn Kerri. Songs got shorter\, shows wilder\, and the police – led by embattled police chief Daryl Gates – shut it all down. This earmark of punk lineage was epitomized in the groundbreaking documentary by Penelope Spheeris\, The Decline of Western Civilization\, in which Circle Jerks most notably performed to a pit of chaos. Today\, the film is recognized and preserved by the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant.” \nIn October 1980\, Circle Jerks released their debut studio album Group Sex on Los Angeles label Frontier Records. Clocking in at fourteen songs in just sixteen minutes\, the record remains a milestone of the punk genre and equally as symbolic nearly forty years later. Plowing forward with a relentless\, tooth- cutting work ethic and a rousing stage presence\, the band would soon find itself headlining shows at LA’s 5\,000-capacity Olympic Auditorium and emblazoned in cult video classics like Repo Man\, New Wave Theatre\, and The Slog Movie. Over the decades\, Circle Jerks would release six studio albums\, including the   acclaimed Wild   in   the   Streets (1982)\, Golden   Shower   of    Hits (1983)\, Wonderful (1985)\, and IV (1987)\, where they would become a major headliner during the alternative music explosion of Generation X. Morris and Hetson remain the only consistent members since the band’s creation\, withstanding several lineup changes\, including Flea and Chuck Biscuits. Bassist Zander Schloss (The Weirdos\, Joe Strummer) has been a member since the 1980’s. During hiatuses\, Morris fronted bands like OFF! and FLAG\, while Hetson played guitar in Bad Religion. \nThe long list of those influenced by the legacy of the Circle Jerks ranges from Butthole Surfers to Red Hot Chili Peppers – with notable fans being Dogtown skateboarders\, Chuck Berry\, Alice Cooper\, Elton John\, Johnny Depp\, Guns N’ Roses\, and Philip K. Dick. Decades later\, their music continues to make an imprint on generations of diverse music fans and those who challenge the status quo. \nIn celebration of the band’s 40th anniversary and the commemorative reissue of their celebrated landmark record Group Sex\, Circle Jerks return to the stage for the first time in over a decade.

And yet\, through this ever-present certainty\, the band finds the absolute core of what it means to be alive. \nSince 2011\, elementary school friends Logan Gaval and Harper Boyhtari have been writing songs full of big ideas and everyday details. Their music\, loud and full of melodic sensibility\, draws from shoegaze\, doomgaze\, and a little-bit-of-everything-gaze\, creating an emotionally maximalist palette. Writing separately but playing together (think of them as small-town Michigan’s Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus)\, they’ve been drawing in a devoted crowd ever since their unexpectedly successful debut Dixieland in 2017\, followed by their next-level opus New Hell in 2019. You’d be hard-pressed to find albums with such heart: ones flooded both with full-bloom feelings and the dumb stories we tell ourselves in order to get through the day. \nReturning six years later with Die In Love\, their third and best album\, Greet Death faces the great human problem—that we must go on living despite knowing we’re going to die\, and loving despite knowing we’re going to lose it all—with great sensitivity\, humor\, and flourish. With this album\, Greet Death has found a way to anthemize our suffering\, to turn it into one great\, big\, beautiful singalong: we’re all gonna die\, woo! \n“Everybody struggles in a roundabout way\,” goes the album’s opening lyric. No longer just honing in on their own pain\, the band is now using suffering as a jumping-off point\, a way to connect\, and ultimately love one another. “Emptiness is everywhere\, so hold each other close\,” Harper sings later on\, another of the album’s key lyrics. After years of performing their songs live\, the band has seen firsthand how keenly their audience connects to their music. “So I wanted to try to write something less fatalistic\, because I feel some kind of responsibility to help\,” says Logan. \nPrior to recording\, Logan had been listening to a lot of The Beatles and Paul McCartney’s solo work\, “because I was trying to figure out how to write a song that wasn’t just depressing\,” he says. He and Harper had been talking for a while about the direction of Die In Love; why not a bunch of love songs?” They tried to do just that\, but of course\, death came creeping in as usual. Die In Love speaks to the most tragic and beautiful scenario possible: dying beside the person you’ve spent your whole life loving. Tragic\, because we have to die. Beautiful\, because we might be able to do it together. \nThey recorded the album in Harper’s parents’ basement in Davisburg\, Michigan\, the place where she and Logan spent much of their preteen and adolescent years. They cut their teeth in that basement\, learning how to be a band around the time School of Rock came out and inspired in aughts kids a new possible life path. Logan and Harper covered Metallica and Blink-182 and wrote songs about batteries and frozen yogurt. Returning to that basement well over a decade later to record their third album felt like the back-to-basics moment they needed\, something that would take the pressure off after years away from the studio. \nEver since they were kids\, music has been the primary form of communication for Logan and Harper. Between them\, they’re able to mine the absolute essence of everything both through big picture ideas and small vignettes of life. In Logan’s songs we hear the former\, and in Harper’s the latter. While Logan takes big\, beautiful hits at existence\, Harper focuses on small shards. On her songs — ‘Country Girl’\, ‘Emptiness Is Everywhere’ and ‘Love Me When You Leave’ — she takes us through DVD viewings of Halloween\, buckets at KFC and family gatherings soundtracked by ‘Hotel California\,’ “that bullshit Eagles song”. Then\, she’ll deliver a Loganism in quick succession\, one absolutely devastating lyric that blitzes it all to pieces: “family is everywhere ‘til it’s not there.” \nDie In Love asks how we can possibly cope with all the inevitable loss we’ll experience in this life. How on Earth can anyone survive it? The point is that none of us do. So\, enjoy the bullshit Eagles songs while they last; the cheap beer\, the disappointing New Year’s Eve celebrations\, the family members and the lovers who choose to stay a little while. \n“Pain and loss. Everyone feels it\, it’s a very human thing\,” says Logan. “At the end of the day\, we’re lucky to lose people we care about\,” says Logan.

SUMMARY:DOGTOBERFEST
DESCRIPTION:Dog Costume Contest•Food & Beer •Music\nPints & Pups\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnly one day a year we break our own rules. Any rule breakers out there\, this is your moment! Typically\, K-9s aren’t allowed on Indian Creek Plaza\, and I’m sure you’ve seen all our signs saying so. But\, for this event only\, we put all that signage in storage for the afternoon and welcome all your 4-legged besties to the party. Not only are they invited\, but they ARE the party! We cater to all things dog for our annual Dogtoberfest. \nWe’re going full Bavarian on this one and putting our own twist on the centuries-old German Oktoberfest. What better way to celebrate doggo than to have a cold beer in one hand and a leash in the other. This is a great opportunity for those water lovin’ pups to enjoy our splash pad for the afternoon. \nSome event highlights include “Running of the Wieners\,” so pack up those Dachshunds and bring them on down to the plaza. They’re just so fun to watch! Dress up your pup in their finest threads ‘cause there’s a costume contest. Go all out! Think you have the forearm strength of a 19th-century Bavarian farmer? Prove it! We’re having a Stein Holding Contest\, so get those arms prepped and ready for the occasion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRULES FOR ATTENDING WITH A DOG\nIf you are attending the Dogtober Fest with a dog\, you agree to abide by these terms:\n\n\nAll dogs must be on a leash at all times. Owners are responsible for the actions of their pets. Pets must be under control at all times. \n\n\nNo aggressive animals— if participants display negative behavior\, they will be asked to leave the event. \n\n\nDog should be sociable with other animals\, adults\, and children and should not be aggressive about food\, toys\, or owner. \n\n\nDogs must be comfortable in a loud and festive environment. Please be aware of the stress level of your pet at all times. \n\n\nCourtesy is appreciated! Be prepared to clean up after your pet. Owners are expected to bring their own dog waste bags to clean up waste. \n\n\nDogs must be at least 4 months old\, as younger animals have weak or no immune systems. \n\n\nDogs must be kept on a leash at all times. \n\n\nDogs must be up to date on vaccinations and be in good health. \n\n\nNo dogs in heat.
