Maybe you’re in the market for a new home, or perhaps you’ve just moved into one. Regardless of your circumstance, there are some things you need to know about your new house. This article will help educate you on things you need to know about your house.

Know Where Your Water Shutoff Valves are Located

Most homes have two shutoff valves: one on the interior and one externally, leading into the house. It’s great to know where these are in the off chance you have a leak in one of your pipes that needs to be repaired, or if you’re upgrading plumbing fixtures.

Know Where Gas Line Shutoffs Are

If you have gas going into your home, you should know where to turn it off in case you’re replacing a fireplace or appliance that uses gas.

Find Out Where Your Plumbing Traps Are Located

Hopefully, you won’t lose something down the drain, but in the unlikely event that it does find its way beyond the immediate drain, most homes have a trap that acts as a final collection point for such articles. Gain peace of mind knowing where the trap is located.

Know the Location of Gutter Downspout and Garden Drains

If you notice water backing up in your gutters, or runoff pooling in your yard, it’s a good idea to know the yard drain locations in case they need cleaning. Sometimes lawns overgrow these drains and are challenging to locate, so it’s best to find them early and keep them maintained.

Know Where Your Irrigation Shut Off Valves Are Located

Living here in Idaho, you need to have your sprinklers blown out annually. Additionally, if you need to repair your irrigation system, you’ll need to know where to shut the water off directly. This process is different from merely turning off the system at the control box.

Other Important Things to Know

You should know where your house’s electric panel is located, and it should be readily accessible.

It’s a good idea to know the size of your furnace filters as those need to be replaced at least quarterly (although, depending on the size and frequency of use, you may wind up changing them more frequently).

As you start enjoying and exploring your new home, be sure to make a note of where these items are located. Doing so sooner will provide peace of mind should you need to make an emergency repair or home improvement.
