When you look at the map of the US, you may not think this region has much to offer for activities, but with the dry climate and ample sun, it makes it the perfect place to enjoy outdoor adventures all year long.
So what is the weather like in Boise? After all, as far north as we are in the US, it may seem like our winters are freezing cold and our summers might be miserably hot, especially being so close to the Nevada and Utah deserts.
Before you relocate to Bosie and the Treasure Valley, you need to know what type of weather to expect and what you can do during each season so you enjoy living and playing in the area.
WINTER & SUMMER: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WEATHER IN BOISE
The location of Boise and the Treasure Valley provides beautiful weather year-round. The semi-arid climate of the Boise area benefits from its proximity to the Boise Mountains with an elevation of 10,124 feet. This mountain range protects Boise from the extreme cold of the north during the winter months while also creating a skiers paradise.
During the winter the total average snowfall in Boise is just over 19” of snow. Although that may seem like a lot, each “snow event” averages 3” or less of snow at any given time turning everything in the Treasure Valley into a winter wonderland. Skiers don’t worry, there is plenty of snow in the mountains surrounding the Boise area providing awesome powder days for skiing, snow boarding, tubing and sledding, as well as beautiful views from the valley! It’s a quick trip to Bogus Basin from Boise and Tamarack and Brundage ski resort mountains are only a couple hours from Boise.
Average winter temperatures are in the upper 30’s to low 40’s with the coldest temperatures dipping in to the 20’s or slightly lower in January. Although it’s cold, don’t expect that bone-chilling cold many states experience during the winter months. The dry climate and sunny days don’t keep the cold weather from slowing you down and having fun outdoors.
Summer months are equally as pleasant with the dryer air keeping even the hottest of days somewhat pleasant, especially when you are under the shade of one of our luscious trees or sipping a cocktail on the patio with a gentle mist. You can expect the hottest months to be from about mid-June through mid-September averaging daily temperatures in the 90’s and the hottest days reaching the low 100’s, but quickly cooling off as the sun dips below the horizon. Even on the hottest days, you can enjoy an evening hike or biking along one of the hundreds of trails in the Treasure Valley.
